On January 15, 2021, on the occasion of a new year and the 2021 U.S. presidential inauguration, Wynton Marsalis will release The Democracy! Suite, the follow-up to the Pulitzer Prize-winning composer’s provocative work, The Ever Fonky Lowdown, which was released in 2020. Featuring a hand-picked lineup consisting of members of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, The Democracy! Suite will be available globally as a digital album on Blue Engine Records.

Jazz at Lincoln Center today announced that long-time Board member and respected business and civic leader Clarence Otis has been unanimously selected by its Board of Directors as its next Board chair, effective September 15, 2020. Mr. Otis will succeed Robert J. Appel, who has served in that capacity since 2012 and will remain a member of the Board.

23 high school big bands from around the world, largest group in festival’s history, celebrate 25 years of Essentially Ellington, nation’s premier jazz education event

Due to ongoing concerns surrounding the pandemic, closures have upended Jazz at Lincoln Center’s 25th Anniversary Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition & Festival—and the opportunity that more than 400 high school students earned this year to perform at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Frederick P. Rose Hall in New York City.

BLUE ENGINE RECORDS TO RELEASE THE FIFTIES: A PRISM BY THE JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER ORCHESTRA WITH WYNTON MARSALIS

–Blue Engine Records, Jazz at Lincoln Center’s in-house record label, will release The Fifties: A Prism by the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis. Composed and arranged by Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra trombonist Christopher Crenshaw and recorded live at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Frederick P. Rose Hall–also known as the House of Swing–in February 2017, the suite combines many of the different styles and movements that made the jazz of the 1950s so creatively vital.

In response to the growing concerns about the spread of COVID-19, the organization has postponed the nation’s premier jazz education event, the 25th annual Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition and Festival, scheduled to take place in Frederick P. Rose Hall, The House of Swing, on May 7-9, 2020. Jazz at Lincoln Center will announce a new date and plans to celebrate the top 18 high school big bands.

World Premiere Of Sherman Irby’s Newest Composition, Musings of Cosmic Stuff, Performed By the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis

On April 23─25, at 8:00 p.m., in Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Rose Theater, saxophonist Sherman Irby will lead the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis in the world premiere of Irby’s new composition, Musings of Cosmic Stuff. This new musical suite inspired by the cosmos is a blend of music and astronomy, featuring a glimpse at the science behind the celestial phenomena represented by each movement. The group will travel through a series of distinctive movements, evoking awe-inspiring galactic phenomena from supernovas, stars, and black holes to the formation of a galaxy and life itself.

A DEFINITIVE RECORDING OF DUKE ELLINGTON’S MASTERWORK BY THE JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER ORCHESTRA WITH WYNTON MARSALIS

Blue Engine Records,Jazz at Lincoln Center’s in-house recording label, will release a present-day recording of Duke Ellington’s groundbreaking masterpiece Black, Brown and Beige by the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis. Captured during a live, Rose Theater performance in 2018, Black, Brown and Beige is Wynton Marsalis’s first recording of the work and Blue Engine’s first release dedicated entirely to Ellington. Black, Brown and Beige will be available exclusively on all digital platforms on March 6, 2020.
