Jazz at Lincoln Center Welcomes Families To Celebrate Dave Brubeck’s 100th Birthday!

FAMILY CONCERT: WHO IS DAVE BRUBECK? CELEBRATES THE LIFE AND MUSIC OF LEGENDARY PIANIST AND COMPOSER DAVE BRUBECK

Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Rose Theater
March 21, 1:00 p.m. & 3:00 p.m.

New York, NY
(January 22, 2020) —

2020 marks the centennial of Dave Brubeck, the legendary jazz musician best known for crossover hits “Take Five” and “Blue Rondo a la Turk.” To celebrate, Jazz at Lincoln Center invites families with school age children to explore the lasting legacy of this distinguished composer, pianist, and social activist in Family Concert: Who is Dave Brubeck? The family concert featuring the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra takes place in Rose Theater on Saturday, March 21 at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.

Through live performances of some of Brubeck’s greatest works under the music direction of JLCO saxophonist Ted Nash, audiences will hear why his music remains so popular and enjoyable, from the unusual rhythms that made Time Out a record-selling album, to his lively and distinctive solo pieces.

Brubeck’s timeless music and principled leadership changed the world for the better, and as a global jazz ambassador, he represented the best American ideals to the rest of the world. Designed to entertain and inform audiences of all ages, this show honors a one-of-a-kind musician, educator, and champion of social and civil rights.

Family Concert: Who is Dave Brubeck? takes place in Rose Theater at Frederick P. Rose Hall, home of Jazz at Lincoln Center, located on Broadway at 60th Street in New York City. Free pre-concert activities for families take place prior to the show.

Jazz at Lincoln Center’s education programs drive the organization’s efforts to advance the appreciation, understanding, and performance of jazz. The programs have been developed under the guiding vision of Managing and Artistic Director Wynton Marsalis, who during his visits to schools throughout our nation observed that the caliber of jazz education was often inferior to that of other fine arts. In response, Jazz at Lincoln Center offers a continuum of jazz education programs that are designed to suit the varied interests and capabilities of children, teens, and adults. Students learn about jazz’s distinctly American heritage and history as well as its greatest musicians and compositions; they explore its connection to other art forms and study how to play jazz. Today, over two-thirds of Jazz at Lincoln Center’s programming is educational—reaching more than 1,000,000 individuals of all ages and experiences in all 50 states through concerts, webcasting, direct musical instruction and distribution of music scores free of charge.

Jazz at Lincoln Center, now in its 32nd concert season, continues to present the highest quality in artistry and musicianship throughout its 29 programs in Rose Theater and The Appel Room, as well as in the hundreds of performances at Dizzy’s Club. This season is about big ideas and inspiring figures, and further exemplifies all jazz is modern, bridging gaps between people of all backgrounds and ages.
