With an impressive lineup of featured artists and programming in March, Dizzy’s Club celebrates the diverse, international and multi-generational traditions of jazz music. To commemorate Women’s History Month, sets throughout the month showcase the work of some of today’s most talented and influential female jazz musicians, beginning with pianist Helen Sung (March 1), presents PUSH, a one night only celebration of the artistry of women composers including Mary Lou Williams, Geri Allen, Marian McPartland, and Carla Bley.
Next up is rising star saxophonist and Essentially Ellington alumna Lakecia Benjamin(March 11–12), who will lead her quartet with special guests through an evening of John and Alice Coltrane repertoire heard on her new album. Camille Thurman,(March 13–15) a formidable, multitalented saxophonist and second-place winner of the prestigious Sarah Vaughan Vocal Competition, will grace the Dizzy’s stage with the Darrell Green Trio. The all-female DIVA Jazz Orchestra (March 19–22) brings its supercharged excitement and energy to its “New York City home” at Dizzy’s Club, with a reimagining of classic tunes from My Fair Lady, The Music Man, West Side Story, Oklahoma, Damn Yankees, The Sound of Music and more. The Late Night Sessions highlight emerging women bandleaders the entire month, including saxophonist Alexa Tarantino (March 3–7) and bassist Endea Owens (March 10–14).
Additional highlights include Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra trumpeter Kenny Rampton’s Sextet (March 6–8)and Flamenco Meets Jazz—the world premiere of a new collaboration between flamenco guitarist Dani de Morón and Israeli guitarist Yotam Silberstein alongside Spanish percussionist Agustín Diassera(March 16). Samba jazz comes to Dizzy’s with drummer Duduka Da Fonseca, pianist Helio Alves and vocalist Maucha Adnet (March 26–29), each of them an expert recognized internationally for expanding the worlds of jazz and Brazilian music. Clave Con Jazz (March 3–5),curated by Ron McGugins, is a three-night celebration of Latin jazz highlighting important connections between American jazz and Latin American rhythms. Helen Sung is a mighty force on piano—an adept soloist who combines her classical background with a passionate dedication to jazz and the feel of swing. The Jazz at Lincoln Center Youth Orchestra (JLCYO) consists of 20 exceedingly talented and dedicated high school students in the tri-state area (NY, NJ, and CT). Members have the opportunity to enhance their musical education with the finest professional training and performance opportunities. The JLCYO rehearses weekly in Frederick P. Rose Hall, the state-of-the-art home of Jazz at Lincoln Center. The final night of the festival features former musicians of the legendary Tito Puente Orchestra who have come together as the Mambo Legends Orchestra. This incomparable New York institution keeps the 1950s and ‘60s Palladium Era sound alive and well, adding new musical concepts to genre standards set by Tito Puente, Machito and Tito Rodriguez. Every member of this all-star band is a living master of the music, and they’re led by Johnny Rodriguez, Mitch Frohman, and musical director Jose Madera—each of whom spent over 25 years working with Tito Puente.

THE KENNY RAMPTON SEXTET: GRAND STREET REUNION

Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra trumpeter Kenny Rampton began his touring career in impressive fashion as a member of the Ray Charles Orchestra. He’s been a member of the JLCO and Sesame Street band since 2010 and a featured soloist for even longer in mainstays like the Mingus Big Band. He returns to the Dizzy’s Club stage with a tantalizing band comprised entirely of regular bandleaders and headliners. Featuring saxophonist Camille Thurman, trombonist Steve Davis, pianist Geoffrey Keezer, bassist Gerald Cannon, and drummer Willie Jones III, Rampton’s sextet boasts some of the finest instrumentalists in the business. Together they’ll help Rampton showcase his own original compositions and perhaps a few newly arranged classics.

The New York Youth Symphony Jazz Band members range in age from early teens to early 20s, making the quality of their performance even more astonishing. While celebrating the heritage of jazz, the group also values a progressive, emerging new sound. Joining the band is saxophonist Steve Wilson, renowned for his work both as a leader and a sideman with Chick Corea, Michael Brecker, Joe Henderson and Dave Holland (to name a select few). The program will honor the music of Charlie Parker and feature a music commission and world premiere of a new work by Devin Reilly, entitled In the Shadow of Tall Giants.

Nine-time winners of the prestigious DownBeat Student Music Award for Best Collegiate Jazz Group, the Pacific Jazz Ambassadors (formerly known as the Brubeck Institute Jazz Quintet) have performed all over the world, from top jazz clubs and festivals to an appearance at the United Nations as part of the Dave Brubeck forum, Jazz: A Language for Peace. Recent graduates of the group have played at Jazz at Lincoln Center multiple times and are now highly active jazz professionals. The 2019–20 members of this prestigious ensemble are Kate Williams (trumpet), Nico Martinez (bass), Austin Kim (drums), Toby Keys (piano), and Tal Kalman (saxophone). Joining them is special guest vibraphonist, and Brubeck Institute alumnus, Joel Ross. Always a huge hit with audiences and fellow musicians alike, Ross dazzles crowds with his technical virtuosity while also moving them with compelling musicality. This performance will highlight the incredible talent being fostered through educational outreach within the jazz community.

Benjamin has developed a reputation for energetic, genre-crossing performances, and she has played with musicians ranging from Jimmy Heath, Joanne Brackeen, Charenee Wade, and Harry Belafonte to Macy Gray, Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys and The Roots. For this performance she will return to a favorite source of material by leading her quartet with special guests through an evening of Coltrane repertoire from her new album, celebrating and exploring her major saxophone influence, John Coltrane, and the great multi-instrumentalist Alice Coltrane.

The multitalented Camille Thurman is a formidable saxophonist and a recent second-place winner of the prestigious Sarah Vaughan Vocal Competition. She will share the stage with the Darrell Green Trio featuring Darrell Green on drums, Saadi Zain on bass, and Keith Brown on piano. Thurman has performed extensively with artists ranging from the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, Dr. Billy Taylor, George Coleman, Lew Tabackin, and George Benson to Chaka Khan, Alicia Keys, and Missy Elliot. In addition to composing music, Thurman is known for her stylistically varied mix of classic repertoire that highlights her chops as both a singer and instrumentalist; recent albums have records featuring songs by Sarah Vaughan, Wayne Shorter, Wes Montgomery, Jimmy McHugh, Milton Nascimento, Hoagy Carmichael, Cole Porter, Angela Bofill and others.

Flamenco guitar virtuoso Dani de Morón is one of the most exciting flamenco guitarists to emerge in Spain in recent years, and he brings a new edition of Flamenco Meets Jazz to Dizzy’s Club for the first time since he and Aaron Diehl shared the stage in 2014. Alongside Spanish percussionist Agustín Diassera and Tel Aviv-born and New York-based guitarist Yotam Silberstein, he will showcase the deep connection between two internationally beloved music styles.

Judy Carmichael is a Grammy Award-nominated pianist, vocalist, and songwriter who has hosted Judy Carmichael’s Jazz Inspired on NPR for 20 years and counting. Nicknamed “Stride” by Count Basie himself, she has long been recognized as a master of stride piano. Popular with jazz and cabaret audiences alike, Carmichael performs swinging interpretations of the Great American Songbook in addition to her own witty love songs. Her performance will feature clarinet and saxophone virtuoso Ken Peplowski, a musician known for his technically astounding renditions of classic swing material and authentic jazz.

The Ball State University Jazz Lab Ensemble is the flagship of the Ball State University jazz program. The band tours regularly throughout the United States and internationally; this past year the band played at the National Theatre in San Jose and toured throughout Costa Rica. They have also performed at the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival five times and have toured Poland, Prague, Berlin and China. The ensemble has received numerous awards from more than 20 different appearances at jazz festivals. The program is known for bringing in three acclaimed guest artists per year to perform with the band, and they’ve featured such top musicians as Wynton Marsalis, Wycliffe Gorden, Dena DeRose, and Bobby Watson, Buddy DeFranco, Ingrid Jensen, John Fedchock, Byron Stripling, Fareed Haque, and Mike Clark. Renowned pianist and composer Ellen Rowe makes her Dizzy’s Club debut to celebrate her acclaimed new album, Momentum: Portraits of Women in Motion, with her octet featuring alto saxophonist Lisa Parrott, tenor saxophonist Virginia Mayhew, baritone saxophonist Kaleigh Wilder, trumpeter Ingrid Jensen, trombonist Melissa Gardiner, bassist Marion Hayden, and drummer Allison Miller. Each track on the record is a musical portrait of a woman whom Rowe considers a personal hero, from musicians and sports legends to unsung civil rights heroes, politicians and advocates, including Mary Lou Williams, Geri Allen, Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon, Carole King, Billie Jean King, Martina Navratilova, Michelle Obama, Dian Fossey, Jane Goodall, Joan Benoit Samuelson, Gunhilde Swanson and Meghan Canfield Laws. For this performance, Rowe is bringing many of the phenomenal musicians from the recording to perform in groups ranging in size from quintet to octet. Utilizing the great versatility and variety afforded by these world-class musicians, multiple band formats and diversity of women being paid tribute, Rowe has crafted an expansive and highly expressive new jazz experience.
