Jazz at Lincoln Center Selects Nation’s Top High School Big Bands To Compete in New York City for the Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition & Festival

(February 13, 2019 at 3pm) Jazz at Lincoln Center today announced the 15 finalists who will compete in its 24th Annual Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition & Festival–the nation’s premier jazz education event–in New York City on May 9-11, 2019. The competition unites students from coast to coast, and from diverse backgrounds to find harmony together while playing some of the most complex music ever written.

On March 15-16, at 7 and 9:30pm, six of the fastest-rising stars in jazz will join forces for the first time in Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Appel Room to kick off Monterey Jazz Festival’s 60th Anniversary Tour. This celebratory performance will feature musicians who are outstanding representatives of the next generation of jazz artists and educators and have close ties to the Monterey Jazz Festival and with Jazz at Lincoln Center.

Jazz at Lincoln Center presents the world premiere of Kurt Elling’s The Big Blind, March 1-2 at 8pm in Rose Theater. The Grammy-winning vocalist delves into the world of musical theater with this original noir radio drama, co-written with Grammy-nominated songwriter Phil Galdston and inspired by true historic events.
