Jazz at Lincoln Center (JALC) spreads good cheer this holiday season as the world renowned Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (JLCO) and guest vocalists Ekep Nkwelle and Robbie Lee perform Big Band Holidays throughout the United States. Music directed by JLCO trombonist and arranger Chris Crenshaw, the Big Band Holidays Tour commences in Davis, CA on Dec. 3, concluding with a six-date homecoming engagement at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Rose Theater in Frederick P. Rose Hall, known as the House of Swing (located on Broadway at 60th St. in New York City), Dec. 18-22.
Returning to Rose Theater for its 12th season, Big Band Holidays features swinging seasonal classics and new arrangements of timeless holiday tunes.
This annual fan-favorite features two critically acclaimed vocalists: Ekep Nkwelle, whose swinging phrasing and characteristic warmth light up the bandstand, and Robbie Lee, whose crystalline tone and thoughtful interpretation engage listeners of all ages. Nkwelle and Lee join an all-star roll call of predecessors that includes Samara Joy, Dianne Reeves, Cécile McLorin Salvant, Gregory Porter, Kurt Elling, René Marie, Vuyo Sotashe, Veronica Swift, Ashley Pezzotti and Catherine Russell.
The Rose Theater matinee performance on Sunday, Dec. 22, will be a Relaxed Performance, open to all and designed for people with autism, sensory, and communication disorders or learning disabilities. The artistic integrity of the music remains unchanged, however modifications to social and sensory environment may be made.
Additionally, Jazz at Lincoln Center will host a free children’s craft workshop for matinee ticketholders one hour before the 2:00pm performances on Saturday, Dec. 21 and Sunday, Dec. 22 at Frederick P. Rose Hall.
