Jazz at Lincoln Center marks the 20th anniversary of its home, Frederick P. Rose Hall, with season-long programming representing all jazz communities that have performed under the Jazz at Lincoln Center banner.
On November 22 and 23, through musical performance and storytelling, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, music directed by Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and Grammy-nominated bassist and composer Carlos Henriquez, explores Afro-Cuban sounds and influences. The concert event, entitled Journey Through Jazz, part of the Lynne and Richard Pasculano Jazz Series, features the orchestra performing an Afro-Cuban repertoire followed by a spotlight on the swing tradition and the All-American rhythm section. Selections may include Chico O’Farrill’s “Afro-Cuban Jazz Suite,” Mario Bauzá’s “Tanga,” and more from the Latin jazz cannon.
On these special concerts, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra will be joined by guests Ignacio Berroa on drums and Jeremy Bosch on flute and vocals.
Journey Through Jazz takes place in Jazz at Lincoln Center’s the Appel Room on Friday, November 22, at 7:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m., and on Saturday, November 23, at 4:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.
Ticket prices for these Journey Through Jazz performances are Pay-What-You-Choose starting at $20.00, and purchases are limited to two seats per order online, over the phone, and in person at the box office.
The Appel Room is in Frederick P. Rose Hall, home of Jazz at Lincoln Center, at 60th Street and Broadway in New York City. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit jazz.org/jtj6.
“As we celebrate 20 years in the House of Swing, we reflect on how the Afro-Latin tradition has been honored through Jazz at Lincoln Center concerts, educational events, and more over the past two decades,” said Henriquez. “I am proud to carry this tradition into the next chapter of Jazz at Lincoln Center’s history. I will honor this legacy on this Journey Through Jazz concert by celebrating and expanding the Afro-Cuban and Puerto Rican sounds within the American jazz experience through big bands.”
The leitmotif of Jazz at Lincoln Center’s 2024-25 season celebrates integration. This edition of Journey Through Jazz acknowledges and honors the diverse backgrounds of the brilliant master practitioners who established and developed the sound of jazz from its origins to the present day. The net effect is a testimony to the power of jazz to illuminate the multiracial democratic ideals of America, bridging generational, ethnic, and cultural divides.
