BEBOP REVOLUTION FEATURING THE JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER ORCHESTRA WITH WYNTON MARSALIS

New York, NY
(October 21, 2024) —

Jazz at Lincoln Center (JALC), continues its 20th anniversary celebration of Frederick P. Rose Hall, known as the House of Swing with Bebop Revolution featuring the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (JLCO) with Wynton Marsalis.

With music direction by JLCO trombonist and composer Vincent Gardner and special guest vocalist and celebrated scat singer Ashley Pezzotti, Bebop Revolution pays tribute to the legends of bebop on November 8-9, 2024, 7:30 p.m. ET nightly, in Rose Theater.

Bebop Revolution, an immersive experience into the vibrant world of jazz, showcases new, energetic big band arrangements from the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and the world premiere of Jazz at Lincoln Center commissioned piece, Everything Changes composed by JLCO trombonist Vincent Gardner.

Vincent Gardner says, “‘Everything Changes,’ is a ‘Bebopera’ in three movements which will tell the story of the music and it’s impact, as well as pay tribute to three of the masters that taught Dizzy Gillespie about Afro-Latin music; Alberto Socarras, Mario Bauza, and Chano Pozo. The piece will feature scat singing by me, Ashley Pezotti, and JLCO trombonist Chris Crenshaw.”

Gardner continues, “Bebop is my favorite era of jazz music. It represents a time when young musicians took a stand after the horrors of World War II, and made this statement through a new music: everything must change—the world cannot remain the same. To make their statement, artists such as Charlie Parker, Thelonious monk, and Max Roach created music that contained youthful fun, virtousity and intellect, and above all, the position that it didn’t matter what color or nationality you were; if you could learn how to play it, then you could participate.

For these Bebop Revolution concerts, the Jazz at Lincoln Orchestra with Wynton Marsalisare playing a number of newly transcribed arrangements, most likely performed for the first time in many years as the original sheet music was lost or misplaced, including: ‘Duff Capers’ and ‘Oop-Pa-Pa-Da’ from Dizzy Gillespie’s late 1940’s Bebop Big Band, and the original version of Tadd Dameron’s ‘I Think I’ll Go Away’ from his 1947 V-Disc recording.”

Bebop Revolution is held at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Rose Theater, located at Frederick P. Rose Hall, home of Jazz at Lincoln Center, at 60th Street and Broadway in New York City. For more information and to purchase tickets to visit: jazz.org/bebop
