Presented with NJPAC and the Sarah Vaughan International Vocal Competition and JAZZ HOUSE, Jazz at Lincoln Center (JALC) presents The Sarah Vaughan Centennial, hosted by Grammy and Tony Award winner Dee Dee Bridgewater at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Rose Theater, April 19-20, 2024 at 8:00 P.M ET
Honoring Sarah Vaughan, the venerated vocalist, pianist, and band leader whose influence on the music persists, this performances features past Sarah Vaughan International Vocal Competition Winners as special guests, includingCyrille Aimée (2012), Jazzmeia Horn (2013), Quiana Lynell (2017), Lucía Gutiérrez Rebolloso (2022), and the most recent award recipient, Tyreek McDole (2023). McDole is one of the five finalists who emerged from a record number of more than 280 applicants, representing 37 countries.
Highlighting an assortment of Sarah Vaughan’s beloved tunes, this concert event features music from the JAZZ HOUSE Legacy Band, featuring Caelan Cardello (piano, music director), Zoe Obadia (alto saxophone), Julian Lee (tenor saxophone), Wallace Roney, Jr. (trumpet), Coleman Hughes (trombone), Lex Warshawsky (bass), and Zach Adleman (drums).
With her impressive technical and stylistic range, Sarah Vaughan transformed how vocalists approach lyrics and connect to their material. For her centennial, expect new interpretations of classic recordings across different eras of her career, from her tenure with Earl Hines and the early architects of bebop in the 1940s through her Emmy Award for Individual Achievement in the 1980s.
