On February 28 -29 at 8:00 p.m., the multi-Grammy Award–winning Branford Marsalis Quartet returns to Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Rose Theater. In addition to performing tunes that have established Marsalis as a standard-bearer of modern instrumental jazz, the group will perform selections from the GRAMMY-Award nominated album The Secrets Between the Shadow and the Soul featuring new originals by Marsalis and members of the band.
In the midst of Jazz at Lincoln Center’s concert season loaded with big ideas and premier collaborations, the story of this concert event is simply one of jazz’s longest-running bands playing extraordinary music.
The Secrets Between the Shadow and the Soul takes compositional input from the veteran members, with bassist Eric Revis supplying the surging “Dance of the Evil Toys” and the moretensile yet equally dynamic “Nilaste,” while pianist Joey Calderazzo reinforces the lyrical compositional yin to hisv irtuosic keyboard yang in “Cianna” and “Conversation Among the Ruins.” Other influences, ranging from European opera and African percussion ensembles to such saxophone beacons as Ben Webster, Wayne Shorter, John Coltrane and Ornette Coleman, have also shaped Marsalis’ command at non-verbal storytelling.
According to Marsalis, the title of the album The Secrets Between the Shadow and the Soul needs ”no further explanation—it’s just a nice sound.”
Citizens of the Blues, a quartet featuring some of today’s most talented young musicians on the scene, including Anthony Hervey, Isaiah J. Thompson,Phillip Norris, and Domo Branch, will perform an opening set each evening.
