Dizzy’s Club sets the tone for the most romantic day of the year with a Valentine’s Day celebration inclusive of love and live music. Grammy Award-nominated jazz pianist and vocalist Freddy Cole returns to the club to perform Songs for Lovers (February 14-17).Legendary vocalist and “Queen of Cabaret” Marilyn Maye performs iconic tunes with music director Tedd Firth at the piano (February 21-23).
Brazilian percussionist and sonic innovator Cyro Baptista brings his new program, Glosso Lalia (“speaking in tongues”) to Dizzy’s (February 26-27). NEA Jazz Master saxophonist Dave Liebman takes the stage with his band Expansions to celebrate the release of their new album Earth (February 28-29). Additional highlights include Russell Hall’s tribute to Bob Marley on what would have been the reggae legend’s 75th birthday year (February 4-5), rising star tenor saxophonist and Thelonious Monk Award winner Melissa Aldana (February 10-11), Bobby Watson & Horizon with Victor Lewis (February 12-13), Puerto Rican trumpeter Charlie Sepúlveda & The Turnaround (February 7-9), and Jeffery Miller’s Mardi Gras Party (February 25).

NILSON MATTA’S BRAZILIAN VOYAGE QUINTET

Nilson Matta is well known as the world-class bassist of Trio da Paz and as a multi-Grammy Award–wining collaborator with Yo-Yo Ma, Paquito D’Rivera, and Herbie Mann, but his solo career as a composer and bandleader is equally noteworthy. His music brings together lush harmonies, contemporary Brazilian rhythms, and expert improvisation across a variety of moods, making “Brazilian Voyage” an apt title for the group. In every performance, Matta’s expert knowledge of the traditions and modern explorations of Brazilian jazz reveals an evolution in which he continues to play a major role. With Jazz in the New Harmonic, David Chesky fuses 21st century classical harmonies with the rhythms of the city to create a new style of jazz. Both in concert and in the studio, this project has received numerous awards for its provocative and cerebral approach to the classical/jazz blend. Chesky’s patient, angular harmonies are elevated by a solid groove in the group’s foundation, relying on heavy bass vamps from Peter Washington and a steady pulse from drummer Lenny White. The lineup also includes Javon Jackson on tenor saxophone, Jeremy Pelt on trumpet, Peter Washington on bass, and Billy Drummond on drums.

Charlie Sepúlveda is an iconic trumpeter and bandleader, one of the modern greats in jazz and Latin jazz. In addition to being a longtime member of Eddie Palmieri’s band, he has worked extensively with legends like Tito Puente, Dizzy Gillespie, Wynton Marsalis, and Danilo Perez. For more than 25 years, The Turnaround has been Sepúlveda’s own regular working band, a highly refined vehicle for the master to both honor and reinvent Latin jazz tradition. The lineup also includes Norberto Ortiz on tenor saxophone, Bienvenido Dinzey on piano, Gabriel Rodriguez on bass, Francisco Alcalá on drums, and Gadwin Vargas on congas.

Chilean tenor saxophonist Melissa Aldana made history in 2013 as the first South American and first female instrumentalist to win 1st place in the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition. She’s since reinforced her reputation as one of the most formidable saxophonists and improvisers in modern jazz, releasing several acclaimed albums of her own and performing as a guest soloist with a long list of greats. A hit bandleader at Dizzy’s Club, she now returns with a new group—the Melissa Aldana Quartet—featuring pianist Sam Harris, bassist Pablo Menares, and drummer Kush Abadey.

Saxophonist Bobby Watson began his career with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, later becoming the musical director of the quintessential group. He founded Horizon in the early 1990s, building on Art Blakey’s hard-bop sound and adding his own modern twists. Members of the group include trumpeter & flugelhornist Terrell Stafford, pianist Edward Simon, and bassist Essiet Essiet. Though the group reunites only on special occasions, the quintet has grown into one of today’s true all-star ensembles. Bobby Watson and Horizon now reconnect at Dizzy’s Club for the first time in years, and they will be joined by drummer Victor Lewis.

ELIO VILLAFRANCA & THE JASS SYNCOPATORS: LIFE STORIES

Cuban-born pianist Elio Villafranca is known for his inventive and ambitious projects that fuse Western jazz with a cross-continental array of influences, including an extensive breadth of percussion and Latin rhythms. He will present a collection of original music entitled Life Stories. Through tales from his own life experiences, Villafranca will offer a musical and humanitarian journey through Haiti, Cuba, Spain, and New Orleans, as well as a moving tribute to the teenagers who recently assembled in our nation’s capitol to protest gun violence. For the first time ever, Villafranca will also present selections of his newest suite—Don’t Change My Name—a tribute to Florentina Zulueta, the queen of the Ararás in Cuba. Villafranca is often featured in The Appel Room and now he returns to Jazz at Lincoln Center’s most intimate venue. Singer, actress, and living legend Marilyn Maye is the “Queen of Cabaret,” an iconic entertainer whom Ella Fitzgerald famously praised as one of her favorite singers. She’s shared the stage with artists like Count Basie and Charlie Parker, and she appeared on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson an unprecedented 76 times. Maye has been a recent audience favorite at Dizzy’s Club and Jazz at Lincoln Center’s annual galas, and just a couple years ago she headlined four sets in The Appel Room. She now returns to Dizzy’s Club for a run that’s likely to sell out in advance. Joining Maye is pianist and music director for the show Tedd Firth and the rest of his phenomenal rhythm section.

The Juilliard School has been a destination for world-class music education since it was founded, and these incredible young musicians will exemplify that legacy in this performance. The Juilliard School Jazz Ensemble features some of the world’s most talented emerging jazz artists, many of whom are already professional musicians. No stranger to Dizzy’s Club, the ensemble has also performed at noted venues such as the Blue Note and Alice Tully Hall. These gifted young musicians are proof of jazz’s bright future, and they will celebrate the essential, almost mythical New Orleans icon Buddy Bolden, the great cornetist and bandleader who helped develop jazz during its earliest stages.

Not yet 25 years old, trombonist Jeffery Miller is a multi-Grammy Award nominee with a huge sound, incredible chops, and an infectious energy. The New Orleans native, who used to live right off Mardi Gras Boulevard, will lead the Dizzy’s Club Mardi Gras Party for the first time. Representing the best of New Orleans music, Miller has performed with the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra; the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, both at Carnegie Hall (when he was only 15!) and at Madison Square Garden; and with multiple members of the Marsalis family. With special Mardi Gras drinks on the menu, the club is always in good spirits for this Fat Tuesday Celebration.

CYRO BAPTISTA’S GLOSSO LALIA

Brazilian percussionist Cyro Baptista makes his long-awaited return to Jazz at Lincoln Center. Over the past few decades, this superstar percussionist has performed, toured, and recorded Grammy Award-winning albums with an enormous range of musicians, including the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, Yo-Yo Ma, Paul Simon, Phish, John Zorn, Milton Nascimento, Kathleen Battle, James Taylor, and dozens more. He will perform a new program entitled Glosso Lalia (a reference to “glossolalia,” or “speaking a language one does not know—also known as “speaking in tongues”). DAVE LIEBMAN EXPANSIONS
EARTH ALBUM RELEASE CELEBRATION

NEA Jazz Master saxophonist Dave Liebman is a living legend who has recorded on over 500 albums, including more than 70 as a leader. After over two decades’ worth of Dave Liebman Group performances across the world (and nearly twenty albums), the saxophonist titan put together this exciting new band, called Expansions. Fitting in with jazz tradition–and honoring Miles Davis and Elvin Jones, who mentored Liebman in the 1970s–this group extends across generations and allows every member, regardless of seniority, to both teach and learn from one another. The group will present music from Earth, the new album which concludes Liebman’s decades-long project of musically depicting four aspects of nature intertwined with the human species: Fire, Water, Air, and Earth. The main compositional elements in Earth are color, texture, and intervallic constructions, with the composition titles like “Volcano,” “Galaxy,” “Sahara,” and “Concrete Jungle” suggesting their evocative and wide-reaching musical contents.
