Jazz at Lincoln Center fills its halls with the sounds of the holidays every December. In addition to the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra’s long-running Big Band Holidays tradition in Rose Theater, the Dizzy’s Club holiday lineup includes Ted Rosenthal Trio: Winter Wonderland (December 16); Etienne Charles: Creole Christmas (December 17); Duchess (December 18) and Riley’s Red Hot Holidays (December 19–20). The legendary NEA Jazz piano master Barry Harris celebrates his 90th birthday from December 21-24 and the Carlos Henriquez Nonet returns from December 26-31. After ringing in 2019 with sold-out sets, Henriquez will usher in 2020 with special New Year’s Eve sets, complete with a prix fixe menu and party favors.
Additional highlights include Mary Stallings (December 13–15); Steven Bernstein’s Millennial Territory Orchestra with special guest Catherine Russell (December 11) and Steven Bernstein’s Sexmob (December 12); and an Israeli Jazz Celebration with the Yuval Cohen Sextet for the United States premiere of his ten-part KadishZuger Suite (December 10).

TRIBUTE TO HUGH MASEKELA

Manhattan School of Music’s programs of study for Jazz Arts majors are designed to develop skilled performers, composers, arrangers, and jazz educators in preparation for careers in jazz music. Systematic and rigorous conservatory training, combined with a myriad of performance and networking opportunities in New York City, makes this program one of the richest of its kind for emerging jazz musicians. These talented young musicians prove that the spirit of swing is alive and well, and that the future of jazz is in extremely capable hands. Under the leadership of conductor and arranger Jim McNeely, the Jazz Orchestra will pay a timely tribute to world-renowned flugelhornist, trumpeter, bandleader, composer, singer, and defiant political activist, Hugh Masekela. After coming under the tutelage of Dizzy Gillespie and Louis Armstrong, Masekela went on to enjoy a prolific career, releasing over 40 solo albums and collaborating with many of the world’s greatest. His 1986 anti-apartheid anthem “Bring Home Nelson Mandela” became a rallying call around the world for Mandela’s release from prison, and now, 25 years after the end of apartheid in South African, the musicians of the future celebrate this singular icon.

NEW YORK YOUTH SYMPHONY:
SWINGING THROUGH THE AGES WITH SPECIAL GUEST MATT WILSON

The New York Youth Symphony Jazz Band is one of the best ensembles of its kind. The members of this group range in age from early teens to early 20s, making the quality of their performance even more astonishing. While celebrating the heritage of jazz, the group also values a progressive, emerging new sound. They’ll be “swinging through the ages” with Matt Wilson, an endlessly creative and infectiously joyful drummer who regularly sells out Dizzy’s Club, and who was named 2018’s Musician of the Year by the Jazz Journalists Association. In addition to his extraordinary instrumental skills, Wilson receives constant praise as a bandleader and a creative force who experiments and pushes both sidemen and genre boundaries alike, while remaining welcoming and accessible to audiences and his fellow musicians.

LIONESS

Lioness is a collective of female jazz instrumentalists living in New York City, whose mission is to inspire and educate by sharing music created by the past and present women of jazz. Most members of the band have been headlining artists at Dizzy’s Club, and saxophonists Lauren Sevian and Alexa Tarantino have also worked extensively with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, but this performance is the Dizzy’s Club debut of the Lioness septet. Their recent debut album featured original songs by members of the band as well as selections by favorite artists like Aretha Franklin and Carla Bley. The lineup includes Lauren Sevian on baritone saxophone, Jenny Hill on tenor saxophone/flute/clarinet, Alexa Tarantino on alto saxophone, Akiko Tsuruga on organ, Amanda Monaco on guitar, and Sylvia Cuenca on drums.

ULYSSES OWENS, JR.’S GENERATION Y

Ulysses Owens, Jr. is one of the hottest drummers in the business. A prolific sideman with the likes of Christian McBride, Joey Alexander, Steve Wilson, Mulgrew Miller, Steve Nelson, René Marie, and many more, the Grammy Award winner has stepped into a leadership role in recent years with a number of top-shelf groups. He will present the Jazz at Lincoln Center debut of Generation Y—an exciting new group featuring rising stars of the jazz world. With Drew Anderson on trumpet, Alexa Tarantino on saxophone, Luther Allison on piano, and Philip Norris on bass, it’s a hard-swinging band with huge potential.

ULYSSES OWENS, JR. BIG BAND

Drummer Ulysses Owens, Jr. brings his high-octane Big Band back to Dizzy’s Club. This group is an expansion of the acclaimed New Century Jazz Quintet, which already features five of the best rising star and established musicians from New York City and Japan: Ulysses Owens, Jr., Tim Green, Benny Benack III, Takeshi Ohbayashi, and Yasushi Nakamura. The big band configuration adds 11 worthy instrumentalists to the mix, giving a platform to even more of today’s top voices. The group’s varied repertoire includes originals and a range of tunes by such artists as Terence Blanchard, John Coltrane, and Mulgrew Miller, arranged by a number of the talented musicians in the band itself. The band’s musical selections offers a strong foundation for improvised solos and big band fireworks in the spirit of the great big band drummers Sonny Payne, Buddy Rich and Mel Lewis—drummers who inspired Ulysses to create his own big band. Special guests for the weekend include rising star jazz vocalist, Charles Turner III (Friday-Sunday) and jazz master vibraphonist and educator, Stefon Harris, on Sunday.

The Juilliard School has been a destination for world-class music education since it was founded, and these incredible young musicians will exemplify that legacy in this performance. The Juilliard School Jazz Ensemble features some of the world’s most talented emerging jazz artists, each taught by today’s most active, innovative, and respected jazz musicians. No stranger to Dizzy’s Club, the ensemble has also performed at noted venues such as the Blue Note and Alice Tully Hall. These gifted young musicians are proof of jazz’s bright future, and for their return to Dizzy’s Club they will perform the timeless music of John Coltrane.

ISRAELI JAZZ CELEBRATION: YUVAL COHEN SEXTET

Saxophonist, composer, and bandleader Yuval Cohen is a leading figure in modern Israeli jazz, and this show marks his long-anticipated return to Dizzy’s Club. Cohen has played with a long list of legends from the world of jazz and beyond, including his wildly successful family band, The Three Cohens (also featuring Anat and Avishai Cohen), but he is also notable for the eclectic small groups he assembles. This performance will feature the ten-part KadishZuger Suite, Cohen’s latest chamber jazz creation, combining Western Romantic music, traditional jazz, and Israeli music. Blending improvisation with rich, intricate instrumentation, Cohen’s music is refreshingly diverse and easy to get lost in. The lineup also includes Maya Belsitsman on cello and Jonathan Voltzok on trombone.

Trumpeter/slide trumpeter, bandleader, arranger, and composer Steven Bernstein helps keep the New York music scene fun, fresh, and full of surprises. Bernstein’s nine-piece “little big band” Millennial Territory Orchestra is a delightful showcase of his witty, genre-crossing, and sometimes irreverent approach to writing and arranging music. The group performs early swing gems, songs by The Beatles, Don Redman, Ray Charles, Fats Waller, Sly & the Family Stone, and Prince, and some originals—all reinterpreted with the feel of an early 20th Century dance band that was somehow exposed to nearly an extra century’s worth of contemporary musical ideas. The group’s return to Dizzy’s Club will feature vocalist extraordinaire Catherine Russell, herself a popular headlining artist at Dizzy’s Club and in Jazz at Lincoln Center’s larger venues.

Legendary New York City band Sexmob is a quartet of blisteringly talented, boundary-pushing musicians who play wholly reimagined hits from all corners of popular music. Born in New York City’s downtown scene during the 1990s, Sexmob is now coming up to Jazz at Lincoln Center to light up the Dizzy’s Club stage for one night only. The lineup includes Steven Bernstein on slide trumpet, Briggan Krauss on saxophones, Tony Scherr on bass, and Kenny Wollesen on drums.

MARY STALLINGS

Audiences will enjoy one of the most famous views in the city while Mary Stallings sings her heart out alongside saxophonist Houston Person and a trio led by young pianist Emmet Cohen. “Perhaps the best jazz singer singing today,” according to the New York Times, Mary Stallings has performed with the likes of Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie, Geri Allen, and Harry “Sweets” Edison. This performance is a true multigenerational showcase, bringing two veterans together with a trio of young, first-rate instrumentalists.

MONDAY NIGHTS WITH WBGO

Ted Rosenthal, a Long Island native, first gained international acclaim by winning the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano Competition in 1988. Since then, Rosenthal has recorded more than a dozen celebrated albums as a leader and performed with icons like Gerry Mulligan, Art Farmer, Phil Woods, Bob Brookmeyer, and more. The Ted Rosenthal Trio returns for another Winter Wonderland show, continuing what has become a popular holiday tradition at Dizzy’s Club. The repertoire showcases the trio’s impeccable musicianship, and thanks to Rosenthal’s skills as an arranger, his reinterpretations leave intact the timelessness of the best-known Christmas songs. Trumpeter, percussionist, composer, and recent Guggenheim Fellow Etienne Charles returns to celebrate another holiday at Dizzy’s Club. Using jazz as a foundation to engage 20th century Caribbean folk and pop traditions, his powerful band incorporates musical elements from Trinidad, Jamaica, Haiti, and Martinique in a fluid blend of jazz tradition, rhythms of the Caribbean, and an emphasis on the Afro-Caribbean history of calypso music. Across original compositions and new arrangements of classics, Charles’ repertoire is always diverse, carefully selected, and handled with care and originality. Etienne Charles will also headline the final Appel Room concert of the season—Etienne Charles’ Carnival: The Sound of a People.

Inspired by vocal groups like the Boswell Sisters and the Andrews Sisters, Duchess boasts tight vocal harmonies that are both technically challenging and easy on the ears. Rather than performing straight takes on the classics, however, their arrangements are uniquely tailored for their voices and 21st century tastes and are known for their sense of humor and playfulness. The lineup includes vocalists Amy Cervini, Hilary Gardner, and Melissa Stylianou.

This swinging holiday show features a collective of New York’s finest rising stars. These musicians have all worked together extensively, their musicianship is impeccable, and their camaraderie and deep love for this music bring a real fire to the stage. The show’s music director is trumpeter Riley Mulherkar, who has directed a number of outstanding events at Jazz at Lincoln Center, including a Dizzy Gillespie career retrospective, a headlining performance by vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater, some swinging Mardi Gras celebrations, Diane Schuur’s November 2018 concerts in The Appel Room, and, of course, the beloved Red Hot Holidays show.

Dizzy’s Club celebrates the 90th birthday of pianist Barry Harris—a living institution in jazz. An exemplary musician since the 1950s, he’s worked with the likes of Miles Davis, Max Roach, Coleman Hawkins, Dizzy Gillespie, Dexter Gordon, and Yusef Lateef. In addition to recording over 30 albums of his own across six decades, he has played on classic recordings like The Magnificent Thad Jones and Lee Morgan’s The Sidewinder. As vital as ever, Harris is an example of what makes New York City the jazz capital of the world; his live performances are widely celebrated, yet down-to-earth affairs, and his live jazz workshops have made him an invaluable educational resource for musicians.
