Notable performances in Dizzy’s Club in the month of November include the album release celebration of Remembering U by NEA Jazz Master Jimmy Cobb and his trio (November 25); JLCO baritone saxophonist Paul Nedzela and his quartet (November 5–6); a tribute to Billy Higgins by drummer Willie Jones III (November 14–17); vocalist Paula West with her incredible band, which includes guitarist Russell Malone (November 22–24); and drummer Jerome Jennings’ CD release: SOLIDARITY (November 12).
Wycliffe Gordon & Friends (November 26 – December 1) also return for their annual Thanksgiving residency, and on Thanksgiving Day, November 28, Dizzy’s Club will serve festive three-course prix-fixe Thanksgiving feast.

Vibraphone superstar Stefon Harris is a multi-Grammy Award nominee and a frequent recipient of the Jazz Journalist Association’s Best Mallet Player award. He returns to the club with his long-running Blackout band, which in its current iteration features bassist Ben Williams and alto saxophonist Jaleel Shaw—Dizzy’s Club favorites—and two virtuoso musicians who will be making rare appearances at the club: pianist Marc Cary and drummer Terreon Gully. In addition to original compositions from the musical mind of Stefan Harris, the band’s recent repertoire has included fresh takes on songs by Bobby Hutcherson, Abbey Lincoln, Wayne Shorter, Bobby Timmins, Horace Silver, and Michael Jackson.

LEW TABACKIN: ZOOT, COLEMAN AND TABACKIN

Award-winning saxophonist, flutist, and bandleader Lew Tabackin is an extraordinary musician dedicated to showing the full range of possibilities on his instrument—melodically, rhythmically, and dynamically. His huge sound and melodic approach to harmony have drawn bold comparisons to the late, great Coleman Hawkins, an icon to whom Tabackin has paid tribute at Dizzy’s Club and the Kennedy Center. He returns to that favorite subject while also treating audiences to original compositions and the music of Zoot Sims, the iconic saxophonist who personally introduced Tabackin to Hawkins. Joining him onstage will be pianist Bruce Barth alongside Peter Washington and Kenny Washington, who together form one of the most formidable bass and drum duos in contemporary jazz.

PAUL NEDZELA QUARTET

Baritone saxophonist Paul Nedzela is the youngest member of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, and his annual appearance at Dizzy’s Club is always a swinging and virtuosic evening. Nedzela once again brings a group of jazz heavy-hitters to round out his band, including fellow Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra member, pianist Dan Nimmer. From original music to classic standards and a few lesser-known jazz gems, it’s always an outstanding set. He’ll be celebrating the summer release of Introducing Paul Nedzela, a showcase record features both original pieces and Nedzela’s new takes on jazz standards.

TOM HARRELL INFINITY BAND

Trumpet genius TomHarrell is a singular voice in contemporary jazz who has been named “trumpeter of the year” numerous times by DownBeat magazine and the Jazz Journalists Association, won multiple Grammy Awards, and recorded on over 260 albums. He’s played with a long list of greats including Woody Herman, Art Farmer, Horace Silver, Stan Kenton, Lee Konitz, and Bill Evans. His compositions have been performed by artists like Hank Jones, Arturo O’Farrill’s Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra, Ron Carter, and Chris Potter. He’s even worked as an arranger for Vince Guaraldi’s Peanuts, Carlos Santana, and many more. In his return to Dizzy’s Club, following a recent string of sold-out performances, Harrell brings the same band featured on his outstanding 2019 album, Infinity.

Berklee College of Music returns to Dizzy’s Club for a performance that will highlight its new Berklee Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice, founded by artistic director Terri Lyne Carrington. The institute focuses on equity in the jazz field and on the role that jazz can play in the larger struggle for gender justice. It also celebrates the contributions women have made to the development of the art form and frames more equitable conditions for all pursuing careers in jazz. The institute welcomes students of all gender and sexual identities to help achieve the goal of true gender diversity in the field. As with any touring program from Berklee College, expect to hear some of the next generation’s finest musicians as they take full advantage of the opportunity to acquire live, professional performance experience.

JEROME JENNINGS

Drummer Jerome Jennings has worked with jazz royalty like Hank Jones, Sonny Rollins, Ray Charles, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Christian McBride, and dozens more. He’s also been a recent favorite at Jazz at Lincoln Center. From trios to big bands and beyond, Jennings’ deep pocket, versatility, and blazing chops have made him a first-call drummer and respected bandleader. In 2016 Jennings’ debut recording, The Beast, was named one of the year’s top three jazz releases by NPR, received a 4-star rating in DownBeat magazine, and was nominated for the prestigious French ‘Grand Prix du disque’ award for Album Of The Year. This performance is the album release celebration of his anticipated sophomore record, Solidarity.

Vision Ahead is an ascendant New York jazz quintet led by Modern Drummer’s “#1 Best Up-and-Coming Drummer of 2018,” Jonathan Barber. Still in his 20s, Barber has already worked with artists such as Kenny Barron, Jeremy Pelt, Jimmy Greene, Nicholas Payton, J.D. Allen, Terrace Martin, the Brooklyn Philharmonic, and Erykah Badu. Now he’s now stepping out in full force as a bandleader. DownBeat magazine calls Vision Ahead’s self-titled debut album Barber’s “greatest accomplishment to date,” but make no mistake, this group is more than the Jonathan Barber Quintet; this is unmistakably Vision Ahead, a distinctive and close-knit group of musicians who have been working toward this moment for years. Featuring Godwin Louis on saxophone, Andrew Renfroe on guitar, Matt Dwonszyk on bass, and Taber Gable on keys and piano, Vision Ahead offers a fresh blend of classic jazz with elements of gospel, rock, soul, and fusion that’s already attracting listeners across generations.

Ornette Coleman’s “Lonely Woman,” Lee Morgan’s “The Sidewinder,” Eddie Harris’ “Love for Sale,” Cedar Walton’s “Bolivia” are a few selections from the jazz canon on which Billy Higgins served as a masterful drummer. On these special evenings, drummer Willie Jones III, Higgins’ most noted protégé, will lead Our Man Higgins to honor the spirit and music of the legendary drummer featured on these most important records. Now one of the world’s top drummers himself, Willie Jones III is celebrated for his distinct style of rhythmic expression as well as for honoring such monumental influences as Philly Joe Jones, Art Blakey, and Higgins. Though he has a storied background as a sideman with artists including Herbie Hancock, Roy Hargrove, Hank Jones, and Kurt Elling, for the past couple of decades he’s also been producing records—both his own and those of notable contemporaries—on his WJ3 label, with a strong emphasis on swing and traditional jazz rhythms.

Born and raised in Russia, Alex Sipiagin is an expert instrumentalist and a renowned composer and group leader. Sipiagin moved to New York City in 1990 after winning top honors in the Thelonious Monk Institute’s Louis Armstrong Competition, and he has since performed with such top artists as Michael Brecker, Dave Holland, Dr. John, Eric Clapton, and several of the Mingus bands. The lineup, which includes Will Vinson, Seamus Blake, John Escreet, Matt Brewer, Donald Edwards and special guest vocalist Alina Engibaryan, will perform works from Sipiagin’s latest album, NoFo Skies.

A working unit since 2002, The Rodriguez Brothers Band is co-led by pianist/composer Robert and trumpeter/composer Michael. Individually they have worked with icons such as Roy Haynes, Wynton Marsalis, Eddie Palmieri, Quincy Jones, and Harry Connick Jr.— and together they have released a series of well-received records rooted in, but not limited to, Afro-Cuban music and jazz. Their latest record, the 2016 Grammy Award–nominated Impromptu, offers a kinetic, masterfully rendered concept of “Jazz Latin” that incorporates traditional and modern Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, bolero, and jazz flavors.

Known for her mighty voice and unusually eclectic repertoire, Paula West is one of the top vocalists from the West Coast. She’s no stranger to New York City though; in addition to rare, yet always well-received shows in the city’s top clubs, Jazz at Lincoln Center audiences will surely remember her as the vocalist from the 2013 performance of Wynton Marsalis’ Pulitzer Prize–winning Blood on the Fields. In West’s own concerts, her diverse arrangements guarantee fun surprises around every corner and something to suit all tastes; from Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Cole Porter, and George Gershwin to Leonard Bernstein, David Bowie, Bob Dylan, and The Beatles, she honors a variety of classics while confidently taking them in her own direction.

Cobb’s latest stands as a tribute to those people who have been a part of his long journey in jazz and are no longer with us. Special guests include tenor saxophonist Javon Jackson and the late trumpeter Roy Hargrove in one of his last studio sessions. The recording also marks the final session of legendary engineer Rudy Van Gelder, who presided over classic sessions for the Blue Note, Prestige and Impulse! labels. Joined by TBD trio mates, Cobb will continue his lifetime of playing swinging jazz for New Yorkers and music lovers visiting from around the world.
