Pianist and NEA Jazz Master Dick Hyman & clarinetist Ken Peplowski play from their new album on Arbors Records: Counterpoint Lerner & Loewe for the 7:30 p.m. set and are joined by pianist Bill Charlap at 9:30 p.m. for an extremely rare collaboration (October 16). Bill Charlap also works his magic in another unique show, presenting an intimate solo performance for one night only (October 15). In addition, Grammy Award-nominated vocalist Nenna Freelon makes her long-awaited return to Dizzy’s Club after nearly a decade (October 5-6). Drummer Donald Edwards and his quartet take the Dizzy’s stage for high quality instrumental jazz (October 3), and bassist Rufus Reid leads his big band for four consecutive nights (October 17–20).

The final night of the 2019 Generations in Jazz Festival begins on a high note with the Mathis Sound Orchestra led by pianist, keyboardist, and composer Mathis Picard. The band is a mid-sized ensemble featuring a rotating cast of today’s top young musicians, each of them amongst the most in-demand players shaping the identity of the modern jazz scene in New York City. “Devoted to playing dance music from all stages and ages,” it’s an extremely fun and accessible group that grooves hard and has a good time doing it. The tunes are great—whether originals or a reimagined Earth, Wind & Fire classic—and each musician is giving ample opportunity to really stretch out and impress the audience and one another with their solos. This band was a big hit during Late Night Sessions, and this is their 7:30pm debut at DIzzy’s Club. They’re also the perfect segue into the 9:30pm set, featuring Endea Owens and the Cookout.

The final set of the 2019 Generations in Jazz Festival is going to be a party—it always is when Endea Owens and the Cookout are playing. Led by bassist Endea Owens, named Lincoln Center’s Emerging Artist of 2019, the Cookout is a high-energy, good vibes band comprising six of New York’s finest young jazz instrumentalists and a rotating cast of powerful vocalists. The Cookout performs original tunes and a refreshing assortment of jazz, blues, R&B, and dance hits from across the decades.

Drummer Franklin Kiermyer offers a sense of shared catharsis through music that is at once majestic, ferocious, and relatable. When music writers are tasked with describing Kiermyer, the words “ecstasy” and “ecstatic” appear almost predictably, but sometimes a word is just right. Kiermyer’s “Scatter The Atoms That Remain” quartet channels the kind of beautiful, disciplined intensity exemplified by late John Coltrane and explosive hard boppers like Billy Harper. Joining Klermyer is Mike Troy on soprano and tenor saxophone, Davis Whitfield on piano, and Otto Gardner on bass.

DONALD EDWARDS QUINTET

A first-rate drummer on the New York jazz scene, drummer Donald Edwards originally came to prominence in the rich musical worlds of Baton Rouge and New Orleans, where he learned to play not only jazz, but also R&B, funk, gospel, hip-hop, and marching band music. Now a significant bandleader and composer, Edwards has released four albums as a leader and in 2018 was awarded a prestigious Chamber Music America’s New Works Jazz Grant. He’s also in high demand as a drummer among some of today’s greatest musicians, having performed worldwide with Wynton, Ellis, and Branford Marsalis, Catherine Russell, Joey Calderazzo, Ben Wolfe, Tom Harrell, Helen Sung, Orrin Evans, Russell Malone, the Mingus Big Band, and countless more. His quintet consists of Anthony Wonsey on piano, Luques Curtis on bass, Abraham Burton on tenor saxophone, and David Gilmore on guitar.

SARAH MCKENZIE QUINTET

After graduating from Berklee College of Music in just 18 months—on a full scholarship awarded through the Umbria Jazz Festival competition—vocalist, pianist, and composer Sarah McKenzie was quickly signed to the legendary Impulse! record label in 2015. Her first release on the label was the award-winning We Could Be Lovers, featuring originals and arrangements of songs by Duke Ellington, Irving Berlin, Joni Mitchell, Johnny Mercer, the Gershwins, and more. Her follow-up album was Paris in the Rain, a celebration of her international journeys, featuring original material as well as reinterpretations of classics like “When in Rome,” “Tea for Two,” and “Triste.” McKenzie’s latest record 2019’s Secrets of My Heart showcases original songwriting and lyrics, plus new versions of songs by artists including Dinah Washington, Antonio Carlos Jobim, and Wayne Shorter. She returns to Dizzy’s Club with guitarist Dan Wilson, drummer Donald Edwards. saxophonist Troy Roberts—and a to-be-announced bassist.

Grammy Award–nominated vocalist Nnenna Freelon makes her long-awaited return to Dizzy’s Club after nearly a decade. The personnel includes Freelon on vocals, Miki Hayama on piano, Adonis Rose on drums, and Chris Berger on bass. Well known for her inventive tributes to greats like Lena Horne and Ray Charles (with whom she toured), Freelon is also a celebrated recording artist, actor, theater writer and producer, and all-around inspiration. Freelon has performed everywhere from the White House to the Kennedy Center and the Apollo.

The Art Blakey Centennial Celebration kicks off at Dizzy’s Club with the Gen-Next Big Band led by Ralph Peterson—the only drummer ever to play in the band alongside the legendary drum maestro himself. Peterson now continues that legacy with a two-drummer big band featuring a multigenerational array of primarily young talent. It’s a fitting tribute to Blakey, who famously loved to play with up-and-comers, and whose band served as a launching ground for artists from Wayne Shorter and Lee Morgan to Terence Blanchard, Wynton Marsalis, and Ralph Peterson himself.

Across ten new original compositions, Love the Moment showcases Hernandez’ prowess as a pianist, composer, and bandleader. These days, Reid is increasingly stepping into the spotlight as a bandleader, and his big band is truly remarkable. His most recent album, featuring almost the exact same lineup as the group at Dizzy’s, received Grammy Award nominations for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album and Best Instrumental Composition. It’s a striking suite of music, fusing swinging jazz and European classical music with a rare level of depth, intensity, and variety.

TREVOR WATKIS QUINTET: THE MUSIC OF DIZZY REECE

A new super-group featuring pianist Trevor Watkis, trumpeter Byron Wallen, bassist Dezron Douglas, and drummer Willie Jones III swings by Dizzy’s Club as part of a cross-continental tour. Hailing from London and New York City, this all-star quintet was assembled to perform the music of trumpeter and composer Dizzy Reece, a hard bop master whose musical cohorts included Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, Dizzy Gillespie, Dexter Gordon, Art Blakey, John Coltrane, and many others. Originally from Jamaica, Reece made a big name for himself in London before becoming an internationally recognized artist and eventually settling in New York in 1959. The Trevor Watkis Quintet tour resembles his own path around the world, from Jamaica to the United Kingdom, Europe, and eventually the United States.

A longtime member of the extended Jazz at Lincoln Center family, Andy Farber is a dedicated saxophonist, composer, arranger, bandleader, and conductor who has performed all of these roles with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, not to mention dozens of other leading names throughout the jazz, pop, and symphonic orchestra worlds. He leads his own orchestra, a 17-piece swinging big band stacked with top ensemble players and soloists. The band carries forward the timeless tradition of big band jazz, demonstrating its ongoing relevance and boundless versatility.

A consummate pianist and former member of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, Eric Reed first toured with Wynton Marsalis at age 18, and he continues to work with the world’s to jazz luminaries. As a leading contributor to the lineage of expertly swinging jazz music, Reed has recorded dozens of albums as a leader. He’s especially drawn to the quirky and irresistible music of Thelonious Monk, having released a series of albums including The Adventurous Monk, The Dancing Monk, and The Baddest Monk. The repertoire includes “mainly” Monk tunes in Reed’s own adventurous but highly refined manner.

During this time, musician, vocalist, and composer Damien Sneed toured with Franklin, developing a strong relationship as a mentee of the soul legend. In Tribute to Aretha Franklin: The Queen of Soul, Sneed pays homage to the monarch herself, with fresh renditions of her most cherished hits including “Respect,” “Knew You Were Waiting,” “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” “Precious Memories,” “Think,” “Until You Come Back To Me,” “Daydreaming,” “Freeway,” “Natural Woman,” and others.

Percussionist Samuel Torres has been in the U.S. for the past 20 years, but he hails from Bogotá, Columbia, and he was “nurtured in this culturally sophisticated metropolis where jazz and classical music share the stage with salsa and an infinite variety of Colombian folkloric idioms,” as accurately told by his biography. Torres has toured the world with an incredible list of artists, including Arturo Sandoval, Tito Puente, Paquito D’Rivera, Chick Corea, Alejandro Sanz, Ricky Martin, Don Byron, Richard Bona, Lila Downs, Jeff “Tain” Watts, Angelique Kidjo, Marc Anthony, Rubén Blades, Fonseca, Andrés Cepeda, Thalía, and Shakira, not to mention some of the world’s top symphonic orchestras. He brings his electrifying energy to Dizzy’s Club in an album release celebration for his anticipated Alegria (which, in English, means “Joy”).

EDMAR CASTAÑEDA QUARTET

Edmar Castañeda is an unparalleled virtuoso on the harp, recognized internationally for his stunning blend of jazz and foreign folk music, particularly from Colombia, Venezuela, and Argentina. His incredible dexterity and rhythmic independence beg for the cliché that he “must be seen to be believed,” as audio alone gives the illusion of—at minimum—a bass and harp duo. This is a great opportunity to experience his artistry up-close and in-person in Dizzy’s Club, as he is often found in large concert halls around the world. His stellar trio further rounds out the music’s jazz-rooted global representation, and tonight’s performance also features vocalist Andrea Tierra of Medellin.
