During Caribbean Heritage month, Dizzy’s Club celebrates the rich musical heritage of international jazz leaders and Caribbean American Heritage Month. Grammy Award-winning drummer and composer Dion Parson leads two different groups in June, showcasing the music of the U.S. Virgin Islands – Dion Parson & 21st Century Band (June 7-9) and VI Jazz Collective (June 10). The VI Jazz Collective represents the U.S. Virgin Islands both nationally and internationally as part of the “Made in the VI” campaign and features emerging artists, including trumpeter Keshawn Hardy, saxophonist Sherwin Williams, pianist Jairay Petty, bassist Uriel Rogers, drummer Joshua Farrell, and Eljhahe Brathwaite on the quintessential steel pan. June also marks the debut performance of musical collective L’ Ouverture, curated by bassist Jonathan Michel to honor the music and culture of Haiti (June 25).
Additional highlights include the long-awaited returns of Montréal’s multi award–winning François Bourassa Quartet (June 26) featuring pianist François Bourassa, bassist Guy Boisvert, saxophonist and flutist Andre Leroux, and drummer Guillaume Pilote; as well as Brazil’s leading guitarist and Chico Pinheiro with his quartet (June 17). The Scottish National Jazz Orchestra (June 18-19) presents its unique take on Peter and the Wolf with music arranged and orchestrated by artistic director Tommy Smith and text adapted by Liz Lochhead and narrated by actor Tam Dean Burn. Christian McBride returns to Dizzy’s for his annual residency—presenting his Big Band (June 11-16) and Tip City with Emmet Cohen and Dan Wilson (June 20-23). Trumpeter Sean Jones debuts his Dizzy Spellz program (June 27-29), a look at Dizzy Gillespie’s music through an Afro–futuristic fusion of jazz, tap, and bebop. And for Late Night Sessions, Dizzy’s collaborates with France Nø Førmat, the independently owned record label in Paris, to celebrate their 15th anniversary with a presentation of the French-Cuban band, Que Vola? (June 27-29).

The Jazz at Lincoln Center Youth Orchestra (JLCYO) consists of 20 exceedingly talented and dedicated high school students in the tri-state area (NY, NJ, and CT). Members have the opportunity to enhance their musical education with the finest professional training and performance opportunities. The JLCYO rehearses weekly in Frederick P. Rose Hall, the state-of-the-art home of Jazz at Lincoln Center. During these rehearsals, students learn big band repertoire and performance techniques from JLCYO Directors Ted Nash and Tatum Greenblatt, as well as members of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Managing and Artistic Director, Wynton Marsalis. KENNY WERNER TRIO

Kenny Werner is a world-class pianist and composer whose prolific output of compositions, recordings, and educational publications impact as many artists as they do audiences. Werner’s compositional style makes most pieces more of a meditative journey than a concise tune, and the group members excel at creating varied, extended solos around the twists and turns of each song. Werner’s book and method, Effortless Mastery, is considered a definitive teaching tool for improvisers to “liberate” their musicality and avoid falling back on familiar ideas, and this long-running trio puts these ideals into practice.

Grammy Award–winning drummer and composer Dion Parson has now been leading the stellar 21st Century Band for 21 years. Together with saxophonist Ron Blake (of the legendary Saturday Night Live Band), Parson formed 21st Century Band in 1998 to showcase the music of the U.S. Virgin Islands. It has since developed an innovative sound that mixes Virgin Islands traditions, such as Quelbe, and Caribbean infusions, like reggae, calypso, soca, mento, ska, zouk, steel pan, chutney, and funk, with New Orleans and African overtones. This popular group sells out Dizzy’s Club every year, and they are back for three nights during Caribbean Heritage Month.

Under the direction of the great Dion Parson, the VI Jazz Collective is a group of extremely talented young musicians who showcase the musical heritage of the U.S. Virgin Islands within the harmonic structure of jazz. Starting as members of the VI Youth Ensemble, this group of alumni has been developing since 2014, and they’re now representing the U.S. Virgin Islands both nationally and internationally as part of the “Made in the VI” campaign. Christian McBride is a Grammy Award–winning master musician and easily one of the most accomplished bassists alive. CHICO PINHEIRO QUARTET

Widely regarded as a leading voice in Brazil’s current generation of great musicians, Chico Pinheiro continues the globally beloved lineage of Brazilian guitarists. In addition to playing with a long list of Brazil’s top musicians, Pinheiro has also worked with world-renowned artists including Esperanza Spalding, Brad Mehldau, Dianne Reeves, big bands and orchestras from multiple continents, and in the Seasons Guitar Quartet with Anthony Wilson, Julian Lage, and Steve Cardenas, to name just a small portion of his resume. On top of his many gifts as an instrumentalist, Pinheiro is also an award-winning composer and arranger whose albums have been released in dozens of countries.

THE SCOTTISH NATIONAL JAZZ ORCHESTRA

The Scottish National Jazz Orchestra (SNJO) is one of Europe’s foremost contemporary big bands. Founder and director Tommy Smith established the SNJO in 1995 as a not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting jazz as a pre-eminent art form through performances, original compositions, recordings, and educational outreach. The SNJO has shared the stage with renowned jazz artists such as Bill Evans, Joe Lovano, John Scofield, Gary Burton, Bobby Watson, Dave Liebman, Kurt Elling, Kenny Wheeler, Makoto Ozone, and more. In this performance, the SNJO is joined by leading Scots actor Tam Dean Burn to create a wildly vivid jazz version of a hugely popular classical favorite: Serge Prokofieff’s cautionary fable of Peter and the Wolf. Sergei Prokofiev’s cautionary fable is retold in the language of jazz by one of the UK’s most daring and imaginative big bands, the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra. Combining virtuosity and ingenuity with striking theatricality, this is a delightful collision between a folk tale and big-band swing with the music woven around the expressive dialogue adapted by former Scots Makar (National Poet of Scotland), Liz Lochhead and, delivered with eye-rolling loquaciousness by Tam Dean Burn.

CHRISTIAN MCBRIDE’S TIP CITY

Master musician Christian McBride is in a league of his own as a bandleader, bassist, and emcee, and he’s one of the most infectious personalities in all of music. This performance will be the Dizzy’s Club premiere of his Tip City trio, featuring Dan Wilson on guitar and Jazz at Lincoln Center fan-favorite Emmet Cohen on piano, who just won the prestigious American Pianists Association’s Cole Porter Fellowship. McBride has worked with the biggest names in music, from Sonny Rollins, Herbie Hancock, Pat Metheny, and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra to Queen Latifah, Sting, and fellow Philadelphians The Roots—but in his own small groups he has also found incredible success by showcasing rising stars.

RANDY NAPOLEON’S MIDWEST GUITAR LEGACY:

Widely recognized for touring with the iconic Freddy Cole, guitarist Randy Napoleon also successfully leads multiple groups of his own. He has performed and recorded with greats all across the jazz spectrum, and tonight he pays tributes to the Midwest jazz guitar masters: Grant Green, Wes Montgomery, and Kenny Burrell. Though he approaches the instrument and tonight’s program with a voice of his own, the influence of these guitar legends is unmistakable in his playing. This performance, also featuring pianist Jeb Patton, bassist Rodney Whitaker, and drummer Quincy Davis, will be a treat for all jazz guitar lovers and anyone interested in swinging, straight-ahead jazz.

JONATHAN MICHEL: L’OUVERTURE

L’ Ouverture is a collective of musicians with a familial, social, or artistic connection to Haïti, celebrating its rich music and culture along with that of the African Diaspora. Curated by bassist Jonathan Michel, L’ Ouverture’s name refers to both the leader of the Haïtian Revolution, Toussaint L’Ouverture, and the word’s literal meaning:—“The Opening”—suggesting that the group serves as”an opening for those outside the culture to experience the music and stories of the Haïtian people… and to inspire those who are from the ‘motherland’ but are physically away to keep Haïti in their hearts, minds and actions.” (Afropop Worldwide) Featuring some of the finest young voices in live music, including multiple Jazz at Lincoln Center headliners, this is L’Ouverture’s debut performance at Dizzy’s Club.

FRANÇOIS BOURASSA QUARTET

For the first time in 12 years, Montréal’s multi award–winning François Bourassa Quartet returns to Dizzy’s Club. Bourassa’s quartet has been a staple of Canada’s thriving music scene since the mid-1980s, and the group has recorded nine acclaimed albums and toured extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and North America. The Quartet recently won Opus Award for both Jazz Album and Jazz Concert of the Year, and they’re excited to share their latest batch of bold, expressive, and thoughtfully progressive music with audiences in the United States. Joining pianist François Bourassa is bassist Guy Boisvert, saxophonist and flutist Andre Leroux, and drummer Guillaume Pilote.

SEAN JONES: DIZZY SPELLZ

Modern trumpet icon and former Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra member Sean Jones returns to Dizzy’s Club in a unique program called Dizzy Spellz., where the music and life story of Dizzy Gillespie are used as a lens to explore an intersection of cultural and spiritual dilemmas within the African Diaspora. Created with choreographer, tap dancer, and vocalist Brinae Ali, Dizzy Spells offers an innovative, Afro–futuristic fusion of jazz, tap, and bebop. From Dizzy’s coming of age through the racial and social dynamics in the Deep South, to his creating and curating the bebop movement in New York, to his spiritual journey to Africa, and, finally, his delving into Afro-Cuban music and the Baha’i Faith, Dizzy was a complex man well ahead of his time and with plenty of stories to tell. This is the debut performance of Dizzy Spellz at Jazz at Lincoln Center, also featuring Wendell Patrick, Obed Calvaire, and the Curtis Brothers.
