In the month of July, Dizzy’s Club offers 14 unique shows, featuring the greatest talents in jazz as well as their protégés. Brooklyn-born, Harlem-raised vocalist, guitarist, and composer Allan Harris pays tribute to Eddie Jefferson and Nat “King” Cole (July 9), while clarinetist Adrian Cox celebrates the music of Edmond Hall (July 23). Trumpeter Jon Faddis returns to his mentor Dizzy Gillespie’s namesake venue (July 18–21), and Dr. Eddie Henderson takes the stage for a set of straight-ahead jazz and soulful post bop (July 12–13). In collaboration with Brasil Summerfest, Dizzy’s Club presents the New York City debut of the Amaro Freitas Trio (July 31).
After gaining the majority popular vote cast by jazz fans around the world, the newest Ertegun Jazz Hall of Fame class is celebrated with special performances on July 16–17, 2019.The lineup includes the Evan Sherman Big Band honoring Chick Webb (July 16), the Evan Sherman Big Band with special guest Joy Brown honoring Dinah Washington (July 16), Ken Peplowski honoring Frank Trumbauer (July 17), and the Bruce Williams Quintet honoring Julian “Cannonball” Adderley (July 17). Additional highlights include top sensational voices of jazz, as Grammy Award-nominated Catherine Russell returns to Jazz at Lincoln Center’s smallest stage (July 25–28), and vocalists Pauline Jean (July 30) and Andrea Motis (July 22) make their headlining debuts.

EMOCIÓN: THE SOUNDS OF TANGO

Emoción is a vibrant, multinational quintet comprised of virtuoso musicians from Lebanon, Peru, Venezuela, Belgium, and Germany. The instrumental quartet includes Christoph Carlos Eduard Schmitz on cello, Ferdinand Jochen Schäfer on percussion, Joris Geert L. Laenen on piano, and Patrizia Soledad Maria Margret Portz on violin. Also joining them in this is Sevine Abi Aad on vocals. Originally united by their shared passion for the sounds and rhythms of Tango Nuevo, this ensemble celebrates the universal power of music, and their diverse origins reflect a global fusion of repertoire and influences. With tango music serving as a flexible and often dramatic foundation, the band’s impassioned performances help audiences of all backgrounds make an emotional connection to sounds from around the world. Emoción is now starting to sell out prestigious venues worldwide, and this performance will be its first-ever performance at Jazz at Lincoln Center.

QUIANA LYNELL

Winner of the 2017 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition, Quiana Lynell combines her classical training with her gospel upbringing, approaching jazz as a storyteller. Lynell is quickly becoming recognized as one of the top upcoming voices. Her 2019 debut record, which Concord Jazz describes as “a feast of soul, gospel, R&B, groove, and jazz,” features songs by composers such as Nina Simone, Duke Ellington, Donny Hathaway, the Gershwins, Barry Mann and Cynthia Weill, and Alina Engibaryan, offering a hint at the types of tunes audiences can expect.

DR. EDDIE HENDERSON QUINTET

Dr. Eddie Henderson received his first informal trumpet lesson at age nine from Louis Armstrong, and he was still a teenager when Miles Davis conveyed his admiration for Henderson’s playing and encouraged him to pursue music professionally. He’s had a remarkable career ever since, leading his own bands and playing in the groups of Herbie Hancock, Pharoah Sanders, Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, Dexter Gordon, Roy Haynes, Max Roach, and McCoy Tyner—not to mention his bandmates in the ongoing all-star group The Cookers. The Dr. Eddie Henderson Quintet includes Dr. Eddie Henderson on trumpet, Donald Harrison on saxophone, Peter Zak on piano, Gerald Cannon on bass, and Mike Clark on drums.

JEREMY BOSCH PLAYS THE MUSIC OF CHEO FELICIANO

In his Dizzy’s Club headlining premiere, vocalist and flutist Jeremy Bosch performs the music of salsa and bolero pioneer Cheo Feliciano. Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Bosch attended Berklee College of Music on a full scholarship at age 17, and he has since performed all over the world as a bandleader and in groups like the Spanish Harlem Orchestra and Sergio George and the Salsa Giants. Jazz at Lincoln Center audiences might also recognize him from his role in The Carlos Henriquez Project in The Appel Room.

Saxophonist, clarinetist, vocalist, and composer Evan Arntzen has been dreaming about making an album with trumpet great Jon-Erik Kellso for years, and it’s finally happening. Through straight-ahead, swing, blues, and New Orleans-style jazz, Jazz Crush highlights the relationship between the clarinet/saxophone and the trumpet. Since moving to New York, Arntzen and Kellso have worked together in Catherine Russell’s band, in Vince Giordano’s Nighthawks (who won a Grammy Award for their Boardwalk Empire soundtrack), and in Kellso’s own Earregular group. Now, they’re using their mutual admiration as the catalyst and centerpiece of this exciting new project. The personnel includes Evan Arntzen on clarinet, saxophone, and vocals, Jon-Erik Kellso on trumpet, Harvey Tibbs on trombone, Ehud Asherie on piano, Tal Ronen on bass, Kevin Dorn on drums, and Mara Kaye on vocals.

The votes are in, and now it’s time to celebrate the 2019 Ertegun Jazz Hall of Fame inductees! This year’s festivities kick off with the Evan Sherman Big Band paying tribute to the great Chick Webb. Over the past several years, the Evan Sherman Big Band has led some of Dizzy’s Club’s most energetic Late Night Sessions and Late Night Dance Sessions. Directed by drummer Evan Sherman, this group is a perfect match to celebrate Chick Webb, who himself led one of the hardest-swinging bands of the Swing Era. Webb drove the Chick Webb Orchestra with some of the most swinging, innovative, and influential drum work of the era. Whether on instrumental numbers like “Harlem Congo” or on vocal works like “A-Tisket A-Tasket” (featuring the rising star of Ella Fitzgerald), Webb’s ensemble was one of the most remarkable forces to be reckoned with and a perpetual favorite of dancers everywhere.

A formidable vocal master who even enjoyed crossover success on the charts, Dinah Washington effortlessly bridged the worlds of jazz, blues, R&B, and pop. Her distinctive vocal prowess and tone enabled her to take any song and make it uniquely her own, undertaking transformative interpretations of anything from Fats Waller to Hank Williams. With support from the hard-swinging Evan Sherman Big Band, vocalist Joy Brown offers her own fresh take on the iconic vocalist.

The votes are in, and now it’s time to celebrate the 2019 Ertegun Jazz Hall of Fame inductees! Night two of this year’s festivities kicks off with Ken Peplowski paying tribute to the great Frank Trumbauer. Ken Peplowski is a clarinetist and saxophonist cherished for keeping the fire bright in traditional jazz and swing styles. Always with a group of expert swing stylists, he performs vivacious and virtuosic arrangements of classic, early jazz. Though the music is timeless, it’s rare and rewarding to experience renditions that so deftly balance authenticity with individuality. In this show, he honors saxophone genius Frank Trumbauer, the nonpareil master of the C Melody saxophone who, famously in collaboration with Bix Beiderbecke, mastered a singing lyrical line that set the gold standard for the jazz ballad.

The votes are in, and now it’s time to celebrate the 2019 Ertegun Jazz Hall of Fame inductees! Our two nights of induction festivities conclude with this final set, as alto saxophonist Bruce Williams pays tribute to the inimitable Cannonball Adderley. Williams is a gifted musician who has toured and recorded with artists including the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, Roy Hargrove, the World Saxophone Quartet, Branford Marsalis, Josh Evans, Stanley Cowell, Grassella Oliphant, and Oliver Lake. In this show, he celebrates fellow alto player Cannonball Adderley, who made indelible contributions to the worlds of hard bop, modal jazz, soul jazz, and fusion. Sporting a full-bodied sound and blues-drenched delivery, Cannonball’s playing graced some of music’s most iconic records, from Kind of Blue to The Black Messiah. Williams’ own music ranges from slow, thoughtful ballads to greasy mid-tempo swing numbers and fast burners, and he’s well equipped to make his own meaningful musical statement about the legendary Cannonball. This set closes out our 2019 Ertegun Hall of Fame induction celebrations on a high note.

Legendary trumpeter Jon Faddis, protégé of the great Dizzy Gillespie, returns to Dizzy’s Club to great demand. Joining Faddis is David Hazeltine on piano, Kiyoshi Kitagawa on bass, and Dion Parson on drums. Known for an extraordinary and virtually unparalleled range, Faddis has complete mastery over the trumpet. He evokes the voices of Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, Roy Eldridge, and, of course, Gillespie, all while remaining true to his own. Faddis’ illustrious career has seen him perform with top jazz musicians, including Lionel Hampton, Charles Mingus, and the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra.

MONDAY NIGHTS WITH WBGO: ANDREA MOTIS QUINTET
July 22 | 7:30 p.m. & 9:30 p.m.
Singer and trumpeter Andrea Motis makes her anticipated New York City debut at Jazz at Lincoln Center alongside the same remarkably consistent lineup that has brought incredible life to her albums. On Motis’ latest record, Do Outro Lado do Azul, she brings together jazz, Mediterranean influences, and above all, the sounds of Brazil and its legendary composers. Her overall repertoire is even more extensive, however, featuring smart originals, American songbook standards, and more. Motis plays trumpet with a bright, relaxed feel and sings with rare dexterity in Spanish, Portuguese, Catalan, and English. Her extremely tight band really rounds out the performance, holding it down with as a precise, yet soulful rhythm section and contributing plenty of memorable solos of their own. This performance is equally recommended for fans of jazz, Brazilian music, and beyond. Joining Motis is Joan Chamorro on saxophone and bass, Ignasi Terraza on piano, Esteve Pi Ventura on drums, and Josep Traver on guitar.

Adrian Cox is an extraordinary musician with a deep love for the New Orleans clarinet tradition. Jazz at Lincoln Center fans might recognize him from performing the music of Benny Goodman with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, both here in New York and at The Barbican in London. In Profoundly Blue, Cox celebrates the great hot jazz music of Louisiana-born clarinetist Edmond Hall. Cox and his regular group of Joe Webb, Simon Read, and Gethin Jones will play a number of hits and lesser-known tunes from Hall’s influential career, including music that he recorded with Charlie Christian, Louis Armstrong, Teddy Wilson, Eddie Condon, and Meade Lux Lewis. World-renowned saxophonist Eric Person has spent decades composing, recording, and performing a broad range of contemporary jazz at the highest level. He has performed and recorded more than 50 records with greats like McCoy Tyner, Dave Holland, Chico Hamilton, John Hicks, Houston Person, Vernon Reid, Will Calhoun, and World Saxophone Quartet, and now he teams up with vibraphone and percussion virtuoso Bryan Carrott for their Dizzy’s Club co-headlining debut. A New York native, Carrott studied percussion right down the street at LaGuardia High School of Music & Arta and Performing Arts, and he has since performed with David “Fathead” Newman, Muhal Richard Abrams, Steve Kroon, Dave Douglas, Sam Rivers, Tom Harrell, and many others. After multiple appearances on DownBeat magazine’s Critics and Readers Polls, in 2015 he was named No. 1 Rising Star Vibraphonist.

CATHERINE RUSSELL

Grammy Award winner Catherine Russell has been one of the most widely recognized jazz vocalists since the release of her debut album in 2006. Her 2017 album, Harlem on My Mind, was nominated for the 2017 Best Jazz Vocal Album Grammy Award, and in April 2019 she released another anticipated recording. Russell’s experience extends far beyond releasing her acclaimed albums as a solo artist; she has also worked with Steely Dan, David Bowie, Cyndi Lauper, Paul Simon, Jackson Browne, and Levon Helm. She also recently joined the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis on the Big Band Holidays tour for two consecutive years, packing concert halls nationwide. Joining Russell is Matt Munisteri on guitar, Mark Shane on piano, Tal Ronen on bass, and Mark McLean on drums.

MARK GROSS + STRINGS

Saxophonist Mark Gross consistently performs with the best musicians around, both as a headliner and in bands like the Jimmy Heath Big Band, John Pizzarelli Big Band, Mingus Big Band, Duke Ellington Orchestra, and the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. It takes soul and an unfailing commitment to swing—in a huge variety of musical settings—to play in groups like these, and it’s with that spirit that Gross approaches his own shows with strings. The strings’ textures and melodies nicely compliment Gross’ hard-hitting saxophone playing and swinging rhythm section, adding a real freshness to well-loved standards and originals alike.

BRASIL SUMMERFEST: AMARO FREITAS TRIO

In collaboration with Brasil Summerfest, Jazz at Lincoln Center is proud to present the New York City debut of the Amaro Freitas Trio! Freitas realized as a teenager that the piano was his true calling, and he pursued it with all of his heart before he even owned a keyboard—when he wasn’t playing a real piano at church, Freitas was at home studying the instrument every day and practicing on imaginary keys. Kinetic, percussive, and commanding, Freitas is on the cutting edge of fusing Afro-Brazilian rhythmic traditions with genre-defying modern jazz. His regular trio is a forward-thinking and rhythmically astounding group that constantly surprises, which includes Jean Elton on bass and Hugo Medeiros on drums.
