Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Free (and almost free) Performances, Cultural and Education Events, May 2019

In the month of May, Jazz at Lincoln Center offers discounted tickets to some of the most anticipated concerts in Rose Theater and The Appel Room and an extensive range of free cultural events for all ages, including Family Concerts. Jazz at Lincoln Center offers special pricing for students year-round.

Free events include pre-concert discussions led by musicologists and scholars as they discuss an artist’s music and legacy, offering an in-depth look at their contributions to the genre.

PRE-CONCERT DISCUSSION: ELLINGTON THROUGH THE AGES
May 3—4 , 7:00 p.m.

:The Agnes Varis and Karl Leichtman Studio at Jazz at Lincoln Center
Jazz at Lincoln Center’s hour-long pre-concert discussions are led by musicologists and scholars as they discuss the featured artist’s music and legacy, taking anin-depth look at their contributions to the genre. As a precursor to the Ellington Through the Ages concert, this pre-concert discussion explores decades of Duke’s music, including his earliest hits, Hollywood charts, swinging blues numbers, pieces inspired by his international travels, and portions of his later suites.

MELANIE CHARLES AT LINCOLN CENTER 60TH ANNIVERSARY BLOCK PARTY
May 4, 11:30 a.m.
Location: Hearst Plaza at Lincoln Center 
With activities for all ages, this event brings together all of the 11 organizations that comprise Lincoln Center—activating the campus with a range of performances, art-making,film screenings, and more. Brooklyn-based vocalist and flutist Melanie Charles represents Jazz at Lincoln Center with her unique blend of jazz, soul, experimental, and roots music.

PRE-CONCERT DISCUSSION: BIG BAND B-3: JOEY DEFRANCESCO WITH THE JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER ORCHESTRA
May17—18, 7:00 p.m.

This pre-concert discussion provides background on the Big Band B-3: Joey DeFrancesco with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra concert, which explores classic records that defied the Hammond organ’s typical small group confines and paired the soulful instrument with a big band.

MILES DAVIS LISTENING PARTY: BIRTH OF THE COOL AT 70
May 22, 7:00 p.m.

Host Ashley Kahn and a panel of special guests explore the legacy of Miles Davis’ landmark Birth of the Cool sessions, which celebrates their 70th anniversary this year.
