Jazz at Lincoln Center’s fan-favorite concert series, Jazz & Popular Song series now in its ninth consecutive season, returns with three unique concerts in April through June, led by Michael Feinstein, also known as the “Ambassador of the Great American Songbook”– Caught Between the Moon and New York City: Songs of Peter Allen (April 10-11), Great American Crooners (May 15-16), and I Could Have Danced All Night: The Lerner & Loewe Songbook (June 5-6). With a roster of special guest vocalists and ensembles led by music director Tedd Firth, Feinstein’s shows invoke the charm and glamour of great Hollywood and Broadway classics.
The series kicks off April 10–11, with an already sold-out concert honoring the original “Boy from Oz,” Australian song-and-dance man Peter Allen, whose hit songs were the soundtrack of a generation. Under the watchful eye of Executive Producer Liza Minnelli,who was married to Allen from 1967–1974,and producers/directors Tom Postilio & Mickey Conlon, Feinstein and special guest vocalists Storm Large, Erich Bergen and Melissa Manchester will revisit such classics as “I Go to Rio,” “I Honestly Love You,” “Don’t Cry Out Loud,” and the Academy Award-winning theme song from Arthur, “Best That You Can Do.” These performances celebrate what would have been Allen’s 75th birthday.
The Jazz & Popular Song series continues with a celebration of Great American Crooners, May 15–16.With effortless charm, Feinstein sets a glamorous scene in The Appel Room with the Tedd Firth Big Band and special guest vocalist Milton Suggs. The performance focuses on quintessential crooners Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, and Bobby Darin, whose velvety voices and sentimental serenades made them superstars on stage and on screen. Relive classics like “I’ve Got You Under My Skin,” “Misty,” “I Only Have Eyes for You,” and “Moon River,” and enjoy incredible true stories about these legends.
For the final Appel Room show of the season, Michael Feinstein presents a tribute to Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe (June 5–6), a duo “virtually synonymous with the blockbuster Broadway musical” (PBS). With smash hits such as My Fair Lady, Camelot, Paint Your Wagon, and Gigi, Lerner and Loewe defined a glamorous era of Broadway and Hollywood musicals enjoyed by all ages. Feinstein, with the help of the Tedd Firth Trio and special guest vocalists Tony-nominated Melissa Errico, John Lloyd Young, and Liz Callaway, transports the audience to a period of American romance, humor, and musical creativity. These performances are supported by The Frederick Loewe Foundation.
