Performances at Dizzy’s Club in May showcase the burgeoning talent of up-and-coming artists as well as exemplary jazz veterans — young, New Orleans-bred trombonist and vocalist Jeffery Miller (May 28) makes his Jazz at Lincoln Center headlining debut, while tenor saxophone master Houston Person (May 3—4) leads his own group in Jazz at Lincoln Center’s most intimate venue; he has performed in both The Appel Room and Dizzy’s Club to sold-out audiences. Additional highlights include JLCO trombonist Chris Crenshaw and trumpeter Marcus Printup’s performance with the Georgia Horns sextet (May 31–June 2); master of jazz guitar fundamentals Bruce Forman’s return to New York City featuring bassist Rufus Reid and drummer Matt Wilson (May 2); Grammy-nominated jazz pianist Bill Charlap with his trio featuring bassist Peter Washington and drummer Kenny Washington (May 14—19; May 21—26); and vocalist Nicole Henry (May 29—30). Following a memorable run at Dizzy’s Club Late Night sessions, alto saxophonist and composer Alexa Tarantino returns to the club for her debut album release party with her quartet (May 28); joining her is pianist Christian Sands, bassist Joe Martin, and drummer Ulysses Owens, Jr. The Terraza Big Band (May 13), based at Terraza 7 in Queens, makes their way to Manhattan to celebrate their debut album at Dizzy’s.
May also marks the return of Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Essentially Ellington Competition & Festival, when budding young artists pay tribute to jazz legend Duke Ellington. Notable alumnae Noah Halpern, Anthony Hervey, Sam Chess, Roxy Coss, and Alexa Tarantino take the Dizzy’s stage for one night only (May 8), followed by Julliard Jazz Orchestra’s four-day musical celebration of Duke Ellington (May 9—12). Additionally, 18-year-old Matthew Whitaker, an Essentially Ellington alumnus and the youngest artist ever endorsed by Hammond for his skill on the Hammond B-3 organ, makes his Jazz at Lincoln Center headlining debut (May 27).

Pianist, organist, and composer Willerm Delisfort is a versatile musician and a go-to bandmate across jazz, gospel, R&B, hip hop, soul, and all sorts of fusions. In addition to leading the Willerm Delisfort Project, Delisfort’s stylistic breadth has led him to work with artists such as Fareed Haque, T-Pain, Lauryn Hill, Kirk Whalum, Louis Bellson, Lew Soloff, Calvin Newborne, Corey Wilkes, Curtis Fuller, Jimmy Heath, David Sanchez, Jennifer Holiday, George Freeman, Red Holloway, and many more. His band features a group of similarly openminded musicians: Alexa Barchini, Philip Dizack, Brent Birckhead, Luke Carlos O’Reilly, Jonathan Michel, Jonathan Barber, and Cedric Easton. They will perform new arrangements of modern standards and a vast array of original repertoire.

Dizzy’s Club recently presented guitarist Bruce Forman in his first New York City appearance in over 20 years, and now he returns to the Dizzy’s stage. Forman is a master of jazz guitar fundamentals who honed his skills with the likes of Ray Brown, Freddie Hubbard, and Joe Henderson before embarking on a decades-long career as a leader. He’s making his New York City return in perfect style, with a trio gig featuring two of the city’s top musicians, bassist Rufus Reid and drummer Matt Wilson.

HOUSTON PERSON

Tenor saxophone master Houston Person is widely considered the “soul jazz” standard-bearer. Person’s prolificacy is astounding; on top of being a celebrated and active sideman, he has released more than 75 albums as a leader over the past five decades. Of his 2017 album, Rain or Shine, JazzTimes wrote that “It is the sensual, slightly sweaty, blues-based groove they used to call soul-jazz. It was central to the jazz art form (and to its commercial viability in the 1960s). When you hear an authentic voice of the genre like Person you remember how easy it is to like this music.” At Jazz at Lincoln Center he’s also recently performed in sold-out in The Appel Room, Dizzy’s Club, and in Ben Webster’s Ertegun Jazz Hall of Fame inauguration.

Akiko/Hamilton/Dechter is one of the best organ trios performing today. Organist Akiko Tsuruga has been a New York mainstay since her arrival in 2001, working with icons like Jimmy Cobb, Frank Hess, and Lou Donaldson and earning her own significant acclaim, radio play, and touring opportunities as a bandleader and composer. Jeff Hamilton is a regular favorite at Jazz at Lincoln Center, widely regarded as a master drummer who lights a spark under every group, including his own trios, his co-led Clayton Hamilton Orchestra, and the bands of artists such as Ray Brown, Ella Fitzgerald, Monty Alexander, and Diana Krall. Rounding out the group is guitarist Graham Dechter, who is making his name by proudly extending the lineage of essential guitarists like Wes Montgomery, Grant Green, and Herb Ellis.

Sax & Taps brings two top artists together for an unexpected musical journey full of rhythm, soul, humor, and improvisation. The show spotlights a thrilling musical connection between DeWitt Fleming, Jr. and Erica von Kleist as they perform repertoire spanning from the Jazz Age to today’s most popular songs. Tap dancer, actor, singer, and drummer DeWitt Fleming, Jr. is a top talent in jazz, Broadway, and on screen, having worked with jazz luminaries like Wynton Marsalis, Bobby McFerrin, and Wycliffe Gordon, appearing in Boardwalk Empire, Smash, and How to be Single, and performing frequently off-Broadway and in the current Riverdance tour. Saxophonist, flutist, and piccoloist Erica von Kleist is one of the most versatile multi-instrumentalists around, and she has toured and recorded with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra, Chris Potter, and Rufus Reid. Backed by a rhythm section, these two musical veterans offer audiences something brand new and hugely entertaining with Sax & Taps. The duo’s forthcoming debut record is eagerly anticipated by those in-the-know.

The Terraza Big Band is an 18-piece big band that plays an ever-expanding repertoire of jazz and Latin jazz. The record primarily features original works penned over the past four years by co-leaders Michael Thomas and Edward Perez, and the Terraza Big Band band— packed with many of the city’s finest musicians—is here to bring them to life on the Dizzy’s Club stage.

This specially selected group of young musicians travels and performs internationally, representing the core values and teachings of the BGJI. Teenage phenomenon Matthew Whitaker is a stunning talent on the piano and organ, and he brings an infectious air of positivity and joy with him to the stage. Recognized as a prodigy since he was a child, Whitaker won Amateur Night at the Apollo at age nine and became the youngest artist ever endorsed by Hammond for his skill on the Hammond B-3 organ. The following year, at age ten, he performed at Stevie Wonder’s induction to the Apollo Legends Hall of Fame. He has since toured the world and performed at hundreds of major events and jazz festivals, appeared on shows including The Today Show, Ellen, andCBS Sunday Morning, and he has won countless student and professional awards, including Outstanding Soloist at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition & Festival. In addition to high-profile projects like playing with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Delfeayo Marsalis’ Uptown Jazz Orchestra, the Wynton Marsalis Septet, and the Louisian Philharmonic Orchestra, Miller is also building his bandleading resume. This is his debut performance as a Jazz at Lincoln Center headliner.
