Dizzy’s Club April 2019 Lineup Announced

(March 11, 2019) —  

During Jazz Appreciation Month, Dizzy’s Club offers 17 unique shows, including opportunities to see members of the esteemed Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra in an intimate club– JLCO trombonist Elliot Mason with his brother Brad Mason (April 10–11) in a program celebrating the music of Coltrane, Monk and Ellington; as well as alto saxophonist Sherman Irby with trombonist Vincent Gardner (April 12–14). Additional highlights for the month include the Dizzy’s Club debut of the Tony Award-winning Broadway legend Ben Vereen with members of the Juilliard Jazz Ensemble (April 4–7), as well as the album release party for Yotam Silberstein Quartet featuring John Patitucci (April 2–3).  The Yale Jazz Ensemble featuring Randy Brecker and Wayne Escoffery (April 15) honors the 80th anniversary of Blue Note and pianist Monty Alexander brings his trio for a weekend blending jazz and the rhythms of the Caribbean (April 18–21). Dizzy’s Club also hosts the winner of the American Pianists Association Competition (April 16) – the competition finalists are Kenny Banks, Jr., Emmet Cohen, Billy Test, David Meder, and Keelan Dimick. The winner will be announced to the public on April 6.

WILLIAM PATERSON JAZZ UNIVERSITY ORCHESTRA AND JAZZ QUINTET WITH SPECIAL GUEST INGRID JENSEN

Hear the brightest young jazz students perform alongside modern trumpet great Ingrid Jensen. Part of the William Paterson University Department of Music, the Jazz Studies Program is unique among college programs for its emphasis on small-group playing. The elite program also emphasizes arranging, composition, and solo performance, offering a well-rounded education to its dedicated young musicians. The 7:30pm set features the Orchestra, and the 9:30pm set features their jazz ensemble, so you can pick your preference or make a full night out of two unique shows.

YOTAM SILBERSTEIN QUARTET FEATURING JOHN PATITUCCI
FUTURE MEMORIES CD RELEASE

Tel Aviv-born guitarist Yotam Silberstein had already won the coveted “Israeli Jazz Player of The Year” title at the age of 21. Soon after, he performed at Italy’s renowned Umbria Jazz Festival, released a critically acclaimed debut album, and set out on an extensive tour of Europe and the Middle East. Upon receiving a scholarship to attend The New School in 2005, Silberstein moved to New York City, and he has since performed with such luminaries as James Moody, The Heath Brothers, Roy Hargrove, Christian McBride, and Paquito D’Rivera. It’s notoriously challenging for a jazz guitarist to climb the ranks like Silberstein, and it speaks to the high and multifaceted level of his artistry that his acclaim continues to grow. Don’t miss his anticipated return to Dizzy’s Club for his new album release with bassist extraordinaire John Patitucci, accordionist Vitor Goncalves, drummer Daniel Dor, and pianists Glenn Zaleski and Andre Mehmari.

AN EVENING WITH BEN VEREEN
FEATURING MEMBERS OF THE JUILLIARD JAZZ ENSEMBLE

An Evening with Ben Vereen is an uplifting evening of song, dance, and stories seasoned with BenVereen’s insight and humor. A natural entertainer, Vereen has appeared in Broadway smash hits such as Wicked, Hair, Jesus Christ Superstar, and Pippin, on television in monumental series like Roots, and in countless one-man shows. With musical support from members of the outstanding Juilliard Jazz Ensemble, Vereen will entertain Dizzy’s audiences with signature numbers such as “Magic To Do” from Pippin, “Wait For It” from Hamilton, “Defying Gravity” from Wicked, Elton John’s “Your Song,” Bob Marley’s “Get Up, Stand Up,” and a tribute to Sammy Davis Jr. and Frank Sinatra.

MANHATTAN SCHOOL OF MUSIC JAZZ ORCHESTRA: MANHATTAN SINGS!

Manhattan School of Music’s programs of study for Jazz Arts majors are designed to develop skilled performers, composers, arrangers, and jazz educators in preparation for careers in jazz music. Systematic and rigorous conservatory training, combined with a myriad of performance and networking opportunities in New York City, makes this program one of the richest of its kind for emerging jazz musicians. These talented young musicians prove that the spirit of swing is alive and well, and that the future of jazz is in extremely capable hands. Tonight, under the leadership of conductor and arranger Jim McNeely, the Jazz Orchestra will work alongside members of its growing vocal program to celebrate the longstanding vocal tradition in jazz.

JULIEN LABRO & THE CHANSON EXPERIMENT

Julien Labro is one of the most in-demand accordionists, working for a wide range of bandleaders, from straight-ahead jazz to music from around the world. The Chanson Experiment, Labro’s most recent project, is an exploration of his French roots, and Labro will be joined by pianist Michael Eckroth, bassist Edward Perez, and drummer Richie Barshay. In this program he composes and arranges traditional French chansons with a 21st century perspective, bringing a modern harmonic sophistication to heart-on-your-sleeve themes. The accordion, the cornerstone of the French chanson, shines bright at the forefront of this show thanks to Labro’s jaw-dropping virtuosity.

THE MASON BROTHERS QUINTET
THE MUSIC OF COLTRANE, MONK AND ELLINGTON

Brothers Brad and Elliot Mason share a truly unique musical bond and vision when performing together. Described as “one of the most important trombone voices of today’s generation,” Elliot is a longtime member of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis. Brad has proven himself as one of New York’s highly respected trumpet players and educators. Pianist Dave Kikoski, bassist Matt Penman, and drummer Johnathan Blake will join the Mason brothers on the Dizzy’s stage.

SHERMAN IRBY & MOMENTUM

Our streak of Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra members in Dizzy’s Club continues as JLCO alto saxophonist Sherman Irby brings his all-star quintet back to the club. An accomplished bandleader and saxophonist with the sweetest tone, Irby has also distinguished himself as a talented composer and arranger. Momentum is a natural extension of Irby’s vision as a leader, as he presents original compositions written specifically for this band. Joining Irby will be trombonist and fellow JLCO member Vincent Gardner, plus a highly prestigious rhythm section of Keith BrownGerald Cannon, and Joe Farnsworth.

MONDAY NIGHTS WITH WBGO: YALE JAZZ ENSEMBLE FEATURING RANDY BRECKER AND WAYNE ESCOFFERY

ANNIVERSARY OF THE BLUE NOTE LABEL

The Yale Jazz Ensemble (YJE) is a 17-piece big band that performs a wide variety of music, from Yale’s Benny Goodman archive to the newest and most progressive jazz compositions. The ensemble has performed extensively throughout the United States and internationally, and tonight they make their anticipated debut at Dizzy’s Club. Tonight’s program, celebrating 80 years of Blue Note Records, will feature two modern giants of jazz: trumpeter Randy Brecker and saxophonist Wayne Escoffery, adding to the list of elite jazz musicians to work with this impressive student ensemble.

WBGO is proud to partner once again with Dizzy’s Club on Monday Nights with WBGO. The series features talented new artists as well as groups from some of the areas great college jazz programs. Each performance is hosted by WBGO announcer Rhonda Hamilton.

WINNER OF THE AMERICAN PIANISTS ASSOCIATION COMPETITION
April 16 | 7:30pm & 9:30pm
The American Pianists Awards is an elite jazz competition that names a new Cole Porter Fellow once every four years, after a unique 13-month competition process. The winner receives a cash prize, concert bookings, a recording contract with Mack Avenue Records, and more. The past five winners of this competition have been Sullivan Fortner, Aaron Diehl, Dan Tepfer, Adam Birnbaum, and Aaron Parks, all of them now well-established professionals and genuine artists on their instrument. The current competition finalists are Kenny Banks, Jr.Emmet CohenBilly Test, David Meder, and Keelan Dimick, each of them a worthy talent for this prestigious program. Tonight’s show will be a performance starring the competition’s new winner (to be announced on April 6, 2019). Don’t miss the chance to hear the next Cole Porter Fellow play on our beautiful Steinway concert grand piano in this intimate Dizzy’s Club showcase.

In a career spanning six decades, pianist Monty Alexander has built a reputation by exploring and bridging the worlds of American jazz, popular song, and the music of his native Jamaica. In the process, he has performed and recorded with artists from every corner of the musical universe and entertainment world, including Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Ray Brown, Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins, Clark Terry, Quincy Jones, Ernest Ranglin, Barbara Hendricks, Bobby McFerrin, Sly Dunbar, and Robbie Shakespeare. Combining classic, swinging jazz with the rhythms and vibrations of Jamaica, Alexander always makes good on his promise to “get everybody moving below the waist.”

The 17-piece SUNY Purchase Jazz Orchestra (PJO), co-directed by Grammy Award–winning bassist Todd Coolman and legendary trumpeter Jon Faddis, is comprised of exceedingly talented students from the Conservatory of Music’s jazz studies program. Performing jazz from every era, from staples like Ellington and Basie to leading contemporary composers like McNeely, Clayton, Abene, and Schneider, the PJO always swings. The PJO and its many special guests have a long history with Dizzy’s Club, and tonight the group features special guest vibraphonist Steve Nelson, one of the absolute top voices on the instrument and an in-demand headliner at Dizzy’s Club and beyond.

SAM REIDER & HUMAN HANDS

Accordionist, pianist, and composer Sam Reider leads the Brooklyn-based group of bluegrass and jazz musicians known as the Human Hands. Riding high from their critically acclaimed debut record in 2018, Too Hot to Sleep, Human Hands has recently appeared at major festivals and venues throughout the U.S. and UK and performed live in the BBC. With an expansive repertoire that’s technically thrilling and yet infectiously melodic and easy on the ears, Human Hands approaches each performance with an exuberance and sense of fun-loving comradery that guarantees a good time for any folk, bluegrass, or jazz fan.

EVAN CHRISTOPHER: THE KINGS OF NEW ORLEANS CLARINET

Evan Christopher is a Dizzy’s Club favorite who has brought the club to standing ovation on more than one occasion. An authentic and passionate purveyor of classic New Orleans jazz clarinet, Christopher is also an innovator, exploring new corners within a timeless tradition. This is irresistibly enjoyable music performed by one of New Orleans’ top virtuosos.

“NEW YORK, OLD FRIEND”: SONGS OF KENNETH D. LAUB WITH CLINT HOLMES, VERONICA SWIFT AND NICOLAS KING

New York, Old Friend is a unique cabaret program with music and lyrics written by famed New Yorker Kenneth D. Laub. Featuring vocalists Clint Holmes, Veronica Swift, and Nicolas King, the DIVA Jazz Orchestra, and pianist/music director Tedd FirthNew York, Old Friend is a romantic series of stories that addresses the relationships New Yorkers have with the city and with each other. Together, these original songs remind us that what makes New York special is “not the streets and skyscrapers, but the relationships within.” No other jazz club has a view of New York City like Dizzy’s Club, so make sure to catch this show in the most fitting setting imaginable.

KENNY BARRON QUARTET

NEA Jazz Master and nine-time Grammy Award–nominated pianist Kenny Barron is one of the most important pianists of the last several decades, known both for his solo work and for his projects with Ella Fitzgerald, Joe Henderson, Stan Getz, Dizzy Gillespie, Yusef Lateef, and many more. His exquisite repertoire of original music includes recent compositions and modern classics that span his work with the aforementioned artists as well as more recent contemporaries. Praised endlessly for both his sensitivity and his virtuosity, Barron is undisputedly one of the top jazz pianists in the world, and we are thrilled to welcome him back to Dizzy’s Club.

TEMPLE UNIVERSITY JAZZ BAND WITH TERELL STAFFORD FEATURING SPECIAL GUEST MARSHALL GILKES

The Temple University Jazz Band – an exemplary student group led by Grammy Award-winning trumpeter Terell Stafford—returns to Dizzy’s Club. Tonight’s performance will be an impressive display of up-and-coming talent under the extraordinary leadership of Terell Stafford, whose band credits include McCoy Tyner, Benny Golson, Jimmy Heath, and the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. The Temple University Jazz Band has shared the stage with such legends as Dizzy Gillespie, Max Roach, Benny Golson, Dr. Billy Taylor, and Wynton Marsalis, and they always sound great at Dizzy’s no matter who shows up. Special guest trombonist Marshall Gilkes will join the band.

CAMILLE THURMAN WITH THE DARRELL GREEN TRIO

The multitalented Camille Thurman is a formidable saxophonist and second-place winner of the prestigious Sarah Vaughan Vocal Competition. She has performed with artists ranging from the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, Dr. Billy Taylor, George Coleman, Lew Tabackin, and George Benson to Chaka Khan, Alicia Keys, and Missy Elliot. Tonight (International Jazz Day) she returns to Dizzy’s Club with the Darrell Green Trio to play music from her outstanding latest album, Waiting for the Sunrise, featuring repertoire by Jimmy McHugh, Milton Nascimento, Hoagy Carmichael, Cole Porter, and Angela Bofill—as well as a few deep cuts that Thurman proves are just as timeless as the standards. Thurman is equally talented as a vocalist as she is a saxophonist, and her performances as a bandleader are the best way to experience the full scope of her artistry.
