Free events include pre-concert discussions led by musicologists and scholars as they discuss an artist’s music and legacy, offering an in-depth look at their contributions to the genre.

PRE-CONCERT DISCUSSION: KURT ELLING’S “THE BIG BLIND”

Jazz at Lincoln Center’s hour-long pre-concert discussions are led by musicologists and scholars as they discuss the featured artist’s music and legacy, taking an in-depth look at their contributions to the genre. This pre-concert discussion provides background on Kurt Elling’s “The Big Blind,”a radio-style musical drama written by Kurt Elling and Phil Galdston, in which a young jazz singer faces the ultimate test.

THE UNITED STATES ARMY FIELD BAND JAZZ AMBASSADORS

Location: Dizzy’s Club
The Jazz Ambassadors are the United States Army’s premier touring big band, and they travel thousands of miles each year to present America’s greatest original art form to enthusiastic audiences throughout the world. Formed in 1969, this 19-member ensemble has appeared in all 50 states as well as in Canada, Mexico, Japan, India, and countries throughout Europe.

FAMILY CONCERT: WHO IS MILES DAVIS?

Location: Rose Theater
The Jazz for Young People series continues with an hour-long narrated concert that will teach audiences about Miles Davis. With an engaging script,live musical performances, and crowd participation, families will learn about Davis’ trials and triumphs and hear examples of what made his music so special.Trumpet master Sean Jones (a former Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra member)serves as host and bandleader, bringing both the story and the music to life in a most impressive manner.

Asa precursor to the Marcus Miller: Electric Miles concert, this pre-concert discussion explores Miles Davis’ “electric period”— one of the most influential and passionately debated eras in all of modern music.
