The Dizzy’s Club stage showcases the diversity of burgeoning jazz talent today, ranging from students at premier institutions of all ages, women breaking boundaries, to international jazz leaders. Highlights in the month of March include the return of the DIVA Jazz Orchestra (March 21–24) and Renee Rosnes (March 7–10); Lakecia Benjamin as part of Carnegie Hall’s citywide Migrations: The Making of America festival (March 13); The Azar Lawrence Experience (March 1-3); Brubeck Institute Jazz Quartet with special guest Lewis Nash (March 11); New York Youth Symphony Jazz with Ryan Keberle and Matt Holman (March 12); the Jazz at Lincoln Center Youth Orchestra with special guest Marshall Gilkes (March 18); and 12-year old pianist Brandon Goldberg (March 25). The Fat Tuesday tradition continues with A Gotham Kings Mardi Gras Celebration,led by Alphonso Horne on trumpet (March 5).
Pianist Gwilyn Simcock makes his first appearance at Dizzy’s Club (March 4, 7:30pm) – this Dizzy’s performance is also his only New York appearance on his international solo tour promoting his upcoming album, Near and Now.Japanese pianist Takeshi Ohbayashi als0 makes his headlining debut with Takeshi Ohbayashi Trio (March 4, 9:30pm) later that evening.
In addition, the United States Army Field Band Jazz Ambassadors hosts a free performance night at Dizzy’s Club, offering all audiences the opportunity to see the United States Army’s premier touring big band with no cover. Formed in 1969, this 19-member ensemble has appeared in all 50 states as well as in Canada, Mexico, Japan, India, and countries throughout Europe. Concerts are programmed to entertain all types of audiences, with repertoire including swing, bebop, Latin jazz, contemporary jazz, standards, and patriotic selections, many of which are written or arranged by members of the band.

Over the course of saxophonist Azar Lawrence’s career, he has performed with such groundbreaking icons as McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones, Frank Zappa, Miles Davis, and Earth, Wind & Fire. He always sells out Dizzy’s Club when he’s in town, and tonight he is bringing a group new to the club: his West Coast band of trumpeter Brian Swartz, guitarist Dale Williams, pianist Theo Saunders, bassist Trevor Ware, percussionist Babatunde Lea, drummer Yayo Morales, and vocalist Windy Barnes Farrell. They’ll be performing an assortment of original music from Lawrence’s albums, including the still-hot Elementals. Lawrence approaches music with a spiritual reverence, and his rock-solid groups play with hard-earned chemistry.

Gwilym Simcock is a brilliant young pianist and composer from Wales. He’s spent the last several years touring extensively in Pat Metheny’s quartet alongside Linda Oh and Antonio Sanchez, but he is also renowned for his stunning solo concerts, which he has performed at prestigious venues such as the Montreal Jazz Festival. Tonight’s show is the only New York stop on Simcock’s solo tour of the United States, United Kingdom, and Europe in promotion of his upcoming release, Near and Now. Join us at Dizzy’s Club for an evening of impeccable jazz-meets-classical piano music.

Tonight’s performance is the Dizzy’s Club headlining debut of pianist and composer Takeshi Ohbayashi—although our audiences might also recognize him as co-leader of the sublime New Century Jazz Quintet. A rising jazz star in his current home of New York City and in his native Japan, Ohbayashi is a hard-swinging pianist with great chops, taste, and improvisational prowess. Expect a high-energy set of piano-driven jazz.

A GOTHAM KINGS MARDI GRAS CELEBRATION

The Gotham Kings Mardi Gras Celebration returns to Dizzy’s for another night of festivities. Led by trumpeter Alphonso Horne, this fun-loving group of musicians and dancers will treat audiences to the infectious traditions of Creole jazz. The concert showcases the virtuosity of a young Louis Armstrong and the innovative genius of King Oliver, weaving the sounds of New Orleans into a rich musical fabric that uplifts and warms the soul. With special Mardi Gras drinks on the menu, the club will be in good spirits for the occasion.

CHUCK ISRAELS NEXTET FEATURING AARON DIEHL

Best known for his essential role in the standard-setting Bill Evans Trio of the 1960s, bassist Chuck Israels has also worked with such legends as Billie Holiday, Benny Goodman, John Coltrane, Coleman Hawkins, Herbie Hancock, and others. Israels is also a remarkable composer and bandleader, and his newest group highlights the variety and originality of his original compositions and arrangements. Widely celebrated for his work with pianists, DownBeat once wrote that “the most impressive aspect of his work with [Bill] Evans is his seemingly intuitive feeling for the direction of the pianist’s improvisations.” Tonight he’ll be performing with a similarly elegant pianist and a member of the extended Jazz at Lincoln Center and Essentially Ellington family, Aaron Diehl.

RENEE ROSNES QUARTET: SONGS OF THE EARTH

One of the premier pianists and composers of her generation, Renee Rosnes has toured and recorded with legendary musicians James Moody, Joe Henderson, Wayne Shorter, JJ Johnson, Bobby Hutcherson, the SFJAZZ Collective, and her husband, pianist Bill Charlap. A New York City staple for years, every member of Rosnes’ group has an extremely impressive résumé and brings their absolute best to this group – bassist Peter Washington,drummer Lewis Nash, and vibraphonist Steve Nelson. If her recent sold-out appearances at Dizzy’s Club are any indication, audiences should expect to hear some of Rosnes’ award-winning original compositions and perhaps a few choice selections by such artists as Bill Evans, Thelonious Monk, and Billy Strayhorn. Extraordinarily gifted as a pianist, composer, and bandleader, Rosnes leads one of the most consistently excellent groups in town.

Nine-time winners of the prestigious DownBeat Student Music Award for Best Collegiate Jazz Group—including the most recent award in 2018—the Brubeck Institute Jazz Quintet has performed all over the world, from top jazz clubs and festivals to an appearance at the United Nations as part of the Dave Brubeck forum, Jazz: A Language for Peace. Recent graduates of the group have played at Jazz at Lincoln Center multiple times and are now highly active jazz professionals. The 2018-2019 members of this prestigious ensemble are Katharine Williams on trumpet, Anthony Milano on piano, Micah Collier on bass, and Austin Kim on drums. Special guest drummer Lewis Nash is an essential jazz veteran who has recorded on more than 400 albums. This performance will highlight the incredible talent being fostered through educational outreach within the jazz community.

The New York Youth Symphony Jazz Band is one of the best ensembles of its kind. The members of this group range in age from early teens to early 20s, making the quality of their performance even more astonishing. While celebrating the heritage of jazz, the group also values a progressive, emerging new sound. Joining the band this evening are two distinguished jazz professionals with exemplary reputations for their involvement in music education: trombonist Ryan Keberle and trumpeter Matt Holman. The show will feature the world premiere of Sam Wolsk’s Not a Day Missed, commissioned as part of the 35th Anniversary of the New York Youth Symphony First Music Commissioning Series. This chapter will be an insightful exploration of the creation and evolution of American music during the Great Migration of 1917—1971. Saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin will provide the soundtrack to this pivotal era through the music of Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus, Muddy Waters, and Aretha Franklin. Benjamin has a well-earned reputation for energetic, genre-crossing performances, and this repertoire is a great opportunity to gain new insight on American popular music from one of its rising stars.

JOHNNY O’NEAL QUARTET CELEBRATES THE 100th BIRTHDAY OF NAT “KING” COLE

Tonight we celebrate 100 years of Nat “King” Cole with an evening led by fellow piano/vocal master Johnny O’Neal. A true New York City jazz veteran, O’Neal has worked with artists and groups like Clark Terry, Ray Brown, Sonny Stitt, Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, and Milt Jackson’s quartet. He recently performed with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis as part of a high-profile Billy Strayhorn centennial celebration, and tonight he returns for another beautiful centennial bash. The Uptown Jazz Tentet is a dynamic large jazz ensemble founded in 2016 and co-led by trumpeter Brandon Lee and trombonists Willie Applewhite and James Burton III. The band includes some of the most venerable young sidemen in all of jazz, many of whom have been Dizzy’s Club headliners: trumpeter Tatum Greenblatt, alto saxophonist Andy Gutauskas, tenor saxophonist Jon Irabagon, baritone saxophonist Carl Maraghi, pianist Adam Birnbaum, bassist Clovis Nicolas, and drummer Aaron Kimmel. Saxophonist Mike Lee comes to Dizzy’s Club for a one-night-only celebration of his new album, Song for All of Us. On this latest record, Lee shows the full breadth of his musical pallet, weaving together a wide range of musical influences through new compositions and welcome standards. On top of leading his own band, Lee is one of the city’s most in-demand players, having recently worked in groups led by Dave Stryker, Wallace Roney, TS Monk, the Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big Band, Jimmy Heath, Oliver Lake, Josh Evans, and Roy Hargrove. Lenny White holds down the drums on the record and on the Dizzy’s Club stage, with additional band members to be added as the show approaches. Considering the record also features Ed Howard, Dave Stryker, Bruce Williams, and Julian Lee—Mike’s son and a favorite at Jazz at Lincoln Center—there’s plenty of talent from which to choose.

Judy Carmichael is a Grammy Award-nominated pianist, vocalist, and songwriter who has hosted Judy Carmichael’s Jazz Inspiredon NPR for 18 years and counting. For well over 30 years she has been a stride piano master (nicknamed “Stride” by Count Basie himself), and she has given performances for the likes of Rod Stewart, Robert Redford, and Bill Clinton. Her performance tonight features her longtime writing partner—the great tenor saxophonist Harry Allen—as special guest. Popular with jazz and cabaret audiences alike, Carmichael performs swinging interpretations of the Great American Songbook in addition to her own witty love songs.

Drummer Duduka da Fonseca (of Trio da Paz), pianist Helio Alves, and vocalist Maucha Adnet are all experts in this music, each of them recognized internationally for expanding the worlds of jazz and Latin music.
