Wadada Leo Smith: America’s National Parks Jazz at Lincoln Center’s The Appel Room January 26, 7pm and 9:30pm

New York, NY
(December 13, 2018) —

For one night only, Wadada Leo Smith will perform his visionary suite, America’s National Parks, for the first time in New York City at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s The Appel Room on January 26 at 7pm and 9:30pm. The Appel Room is located at Frederick P. Rose Hall, home of Jazz at Lincoln Center, located on Broadway at 60th Street, New York, NY.

Wadada’s Golden Quintet, featuring pianist Anthony Davis, bassist John Lindberg, drummer Pheeroan akLaff, and cellist Ashley Walters, will perform the critically-acclaimed America’s National Parks in a multimedia concert setting. In the iconic Appel Room, live visuals created by video artist Jesse Gilbert will blend with live footage of the five-piece band, marrying improvised music with historic imagery in a powerful and collaborative vision.

America’s National Parks, which Smith released in 2016, was voted Album of the Year by DownBeat magazine (Smith also won Artist of the Year and Trumpeter of the Year) and selected as a top-ten album of the year by the New York TimesThe Wire, and NPR. The work explores established, natural national parks including Yellowstone and Yosemite, and pointed subjects of historical and cultural significance including “New Orleans: The National Cultural Park USA 1718” and “Eileen Jackson Southern, 1920–2002: A Literary National Park”. The suite is a thought-provoking and entirely wordless journey that conveys both the grandeur and sense of intimacy felt in these shared spaces. Smith, a prolific artist always working on his next creation, was recently named Musician of the Year in 2017 by the Jazz Journalists Association.

Free pre-concert discussions will take place nightly at 6pm and 8:30pm. For additional information and to purchase tickets, visit jazz.org.
