Free events include pre-concert discussions led by musicologists and scholars as they discuss an artist’s music and legacy, offering an in-depth look at their contributions to the genre.

LISTENING PARTY: GRANT GREEN: THE EVOLUTION OF FUNK FROM PARIS TO VANCOUVER

In May of 2018, Resonance Records released two previously-unissued albums of jazz guitar icon Grant Green — Funk in France: From Paris to Antibes (1969-1970) and Slick! – Live from Oil Can Harry’s. These two albums represented the earliest and latest known recordings of Green as a leader and marked his creative evolution into an increasingly funkier side of jazz. Jazz at Lincoln Center will celebrate the legacy of Grant Green with a listening party of music from the two albums and a panel discussion about Grant Green with producer Zev Feldman, Green’s son Greg Green (aka guitarist Grant Green Jr.), plus Michael Cuscuna (Blue Note Records authority and co-founder of Mosaic Records) and other guests who either knew Grant Green or were inspired by his music.

LISTENING PARTY: ERIC DOLPHY: MUSINGS ON A MUSICAL PROPHET

“Musings of a Musical Prophet” is a CD release celebration of Eric Dolphy’s Musical Prophet: The Expanded 1963 New York Studio Sessions on Resonance Records. Musical Prophet is the first official release of previously-unissued studio recordings since 1987 and contains two under-appreciated Dolphy albums produced by Alan Douglas, Conversations and Iron Man, plus nearly 85-minutes of studio material from these sessions from Dolphy’s personal tape copies that were never officially released before. There will be a listening party of music from the new album and a panel discussion about Eric Dolphy with co-producers Zev Feldman and James Newton, plus saxophonist Oliver Lake and others who either knew Dolphy or were inspired by his music. You can expect some noteworthy names to be on hand talk about Dolphy’s important legacy.

PRE-CONCERT DISCUSSION: THE JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER ORCHESTRA WITH WYNTON MARSALIS AND THE NATIONAL SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA OF ROMANIA

This pre-discussion provides background to the Wadada Leo Smith’s America’s National Parks concert, exploring the suite’s many topics, which range from established natural parks (Yellowstone, Yosemite) to pointed subjects of historical and cultural significance (“New Orleans: The national Cultural Park USA 1718, “Eileen Jackson Southern, 1920-2002: A literary National Park”).

PRE-CONCERT DISCUSSION: PIANO MASTER: THE OSCAR PETERSON STORY
