Dizzy’s Club kicks off the new year with a stellar lineup showcasing the next generation of jazz stars as well as the music’s most respected artists. Featured performers for the month include trumpeter/vocalist Jumaane Smith (January 3) sharing reimagined renditions of classics by Louis Armstrong, Louis Prima, and Louis Jordan; alto saxophonist Patrick Bartley (January 4) celebrating the music of Cannonball Adderley; Christian Sands (January 5–6) presenting two original programs, first with the Christian Sands Quartet and then with the High Wire Trio showcasing the music of Erroll Garner; Ben Paterson, Rina Yamazaki, and Isaiah J. Thompson (January 14)–the winners of the 2018 Ellis Marsalis International Jazz Piano Competition; the Oberlin Sonny Rollins Jazz Ensemble with guest pianist Sullivan Fortner (January 16); vocalist Tatiana Eva-Marie (January 22) celebrating the iconic Django Reinhardt and his brand of hot jazz; and Shenel Johns (January 30) honoring American icons Dianne Reeves, Diana Ross, and Dinah Shore, conducted and arranged by David Gibson for 17-piece orchestra.
In addition, Jazz at Lincoln Center welcomes two artists making their Dizzy’s Club debuts – Brazilian pianist and composer André Mehmari with the André Mehmari Trio with special guest Rogerio Boccato (January 15), and Washington, D.C.-based vocalist Sharón Clark with the Sharón Clark Quartet (January 23).

Known for her wild versatility and originality, Queen Esther approaches each of her projects with a fresh new perspective. She’s received serious acclaim for her unique reinterpretations of Billie Holiday, and tonight she will present Billie Holiday: The Lost Classics. With numbers carefully selected from Queen Esther’s original musical, The Billie Holiday Project, the program spans Billie Holiday’s entire career, providing insight into Lady Day’s body of work as well as her personal life. He’s only 30 years old, but trumpeter Jumaane Smith has already performed at The White House for two sitting presidents; recorded and toured the world with Michael Bublé; worked with the likes of Stevie Wonder, Quincy Jones, Alicia Keys, and Wynton Marsalis; and recorded on albums that have won five Grammy Awards and sold more than 40 million copies. This Essentially Ellington and Juilliard Jazz alumnus’ career is just getting started, and tonight he returns for another headlining performance at Dizzy’s Club, joined by bassist Neal Caine, guitarist Cosimo Fabrizio, drummer Jerome Jennings, vocalist Shenel Johns, pianist Dan Kaufman, trombonist Dion Tucker, and tenor saxophonist Jerry Weldon. Rising star saxophonist Patrick Bartley is still in his early 20s, but he’s already a favorite here at Jazz at Lincoln Center and a first-call player with all sorts of veteran bandleaders, including The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’s Jon Batiste and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Steve Miller. He brings every concert to the next level, from Brianna Thomas’ Ella Sang the Blues and Steve Miller’s annual blues concerts, to his own The Timeless John Coltrane. Tonight he will treat audiences to a celebration of another legendary saxophonist in The Mighty Cannonball Adderley, an outstanding show originally presented as a Late Night Session and at the Caramoor Jazz Festival. In addition to leading essential groups of his own, Cannonball Adderley was best known for his work with Miles Davis, having recorded on Davis’ landmark albums Milestones and Kind of Blue. The 29-year-old pianist and composer has five Grammy Award nominations, years of experience in bands led by masters like Christian McBride, and several outstanding albums under his name. Tonight he returns to Dizzy’s with his band – guitarist Caio Afiune, drummer Jerome Jennings, and bassist Yasushi Nakamura – to play music from latest album, Facing Dragons, which DownBeat calls “a promise that tomorrow’s jazz is in good hands.” Like his previous releases, the record showcases Sands’ broad stylistic range, technical prowess, and mature musical instincts. Sands gave Dizzy’s audiences a tantalizing preview of this material during his most recent concerts here, and we are excited to dig in deeper now that the record is finally complete. Expect a diverse set performed by one of jazz’s most versatile and respected young pianists.

RALPH PETERSON’S AGGREGATE PRIME

Powerhouse drummer Ralph Peterson was the last drummer selected for Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, and he has since worked with dozens of top jazz musicians throughout his consistently excellent career. Aggregate Prime is his exciting new group featuring some of the finest musicians in contemporary music: Mark Whitfield, Kenny Davis, Gary Thomas, and Davis Whitfield. Each band member has contributed new compositions and arrangements for this project (as has recent member Vijay Iyer), resulting in a mixed repertoire of fast-burning swing numbers and odd-metered surprises designed to challenge the musicians and reward listeners. The musicians are all longtime cohorts, and this music expertly showcases their joint experience.

Thompson. Romero Lubambo is a Brazilian guitar virtuoso and one-third of the unstoppable Trio da Paz—a group that sells out Dizzy’s Club every summer for two weeks straight—and a longtime member of Dianne Reeves’s band. Tonight he joins the Rafael Piccolotto de Lima Chamber Project, an elite 12-piece orchestra that “explores the musical possibilities between jazz, classical, and Brazilian music.” The group’s unusual instrumentation—a string section, a jazz wind section, and a Brazilian rhythm section—allows the award-winning composer and conductor to present a truly unique musical soundscape. Tonight’s repertoire is a real crowd-pleaser, featuring works by Antônio Carlos Jobim, Pixinguinha, João Bosco, and Romero’s own acclaimed originals.

Vocalist Sharón Clark has spent a decade spreading the gospel of American jazz across the globe, making her mark on the New York scene by bringing a whole new repertoire into the tradition. Clark will showcase her full range in her Dizzy’s Club debut performance, re-imagining songs from such divergent sources as Irving Berlin, the Bee Gees, Cole Porter, and Jimi Hendrix. Far beyond typical covers or tributes, her treatment of this popular material is a true reinvention, the likes of which you won’t hear anywhere else. Clark has performed as a featured soloist with the Duke Ellington Orchestra, Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra, the Richmond Symphony, and the Baltimore Symphony, and she won first place in the Billie Holiday Vocal Competition and the Savannah Music Festival’s American Traditions Competition. Tonight, we welcome her to our intimate jazz club with music direction by her longtime pianist and music director Chris Grasso, along with bassist Zack Pride and drummer Lenny Robinson. Jazz veterans, colleagues, and kindred spirits Billy Harper, Eddie Henderson, George Cables, Cecil McBee, Billy Hart, and David Weiss forge a world-class union. Taking their group name from a 1965 Freddie Hubbard album, The Night of the Cookers: Live at Club La Marchal, this exciting all-star sextet summons an aggressive mid-1960s spirit. Their repertoire includes a potent collection of expansive post-bop originals, marked by the requisite killer instincts and pyrotechnic playing expected of the scene’s heaviest hitters. Trumpeter and bandleader Weiss says of the group: “They came up at a time when this music was at its most vital and exciting and was part of something epic and historic, yet they are still going strong, playing with the same freedom, passion, and intensity that encompassed this great music.” The depth and power of their music speaks of the seasoned track record of its members, who, combined, have over 250 years of experience in the jazz world and have been a part of over 1,000 recordings.

He now leads his own band in the same spirit, highlighting some of the most talented young jazz musicians. Grammy Award–winning drummer Ulysses Owens, Jr. revamps an extraordinary show originally premiered to sold-out audiences in The Appel Room. Initially developed by Jazz at Lincoln Center, Songs of Freedom has since become a critically acclaimed album and nationally touring project. The powerful program explores the 1960s’ quest for freedom and civil rights through the work of three prolific and uncompromising artists: Joni Mitchel, Abbey Lincoln, and Nina Simone. Each of these indelible musicians expressed freedom in her own way; Mitchell sang about the freedom of love, Lincoln’s lyrics expressed the freedom of her individuality and race, and Simone demanded freedom through political song. Three singular voices of contemporary music will help Owens explore the depth of those legacies: the thoughtfully eclectic Theo Bleckmann, who exemplifies the notion of “voice as instrument;” Brooklyn’s own internationally rising star Alicia Olatuja, known for navigating jazz traditions with a taste of gospel and R&B; and René Marie.
