Dizzy’s Club offers a number of exclusive shows this February, starting with special guest appearances by Wynton Marsalis and the beloved Sesame Street character, Elmo, in Joe Fielder’s Open Sesame (February 4); the only U.S. performance dates for Brussels Jazz Orchestra & Tutu Puoane (February 11–12); and the album release party and ten year celebration of Allison Miller’s Boom Tic Boom (February 26). In addition, three artists will make their Dizzy’s Club headliner debuts in February – tenor saxophonist María Grand (February 5), pianist John Chin (February 19), and David Binney’s Angelino Quartet (February 21).
The Valentine’s Day tradition in Jazz at Lincoln Center also continues in Dizzy’s Club with two love-filled weekends – Freddy Cole Quintet: Songs of Lovers (February 7–10) and Kim Nalley: Love Songs (February 14 – 17). On February 14, Dizzy’s Club will offer a special prix-fixe menu, all designed for a romantic evening.

Grammy Award–winning drummer Ulysses Owens, Jr. revamps an extraordinary show originally premiered to sold-out audiences in The Appel Room. Initially developed by Jazz at Lincoln Center, Songs of Freedom has since become a critically acclaimed album and nationally touring project. The powerful program explores the 1960s’ quest for freedom and civil rights through the work of three prolific and uncompromising artists: Joni Mitchell, Abbey Lincoln, and Nina Simone. Each of these indelible musicians expressed freedom in her own way; Mitchell sang about the freedom of love, Lincoln’s lyrics expressed the freedom of her individuality and race, and Simone demanded freedom through political song. Three singular voices of contemporary music will help Owens explore the depth of those legacies: the thoughtfully eclectic Theo Bleckmann, who exemplifies the notion of “voice as instrument;” Brooklyn’s own internationally rising star Alicia Olatuja, known for navigating jazz traditions with a taste of gospel and R&B; and René Marie. Also joining the group will be pianist Mike King, guitarist David Rosenthal, and bassist Richie Goods.

MARÍA GRAND QUARTET

Tenor saxophonist María Grand moved to New York in 2011 and has rapidly earned a reputation as a formidable saxophonist and improviser as well as an adventurous composer and bandleader. Grand’s Dizzy’s Club debut tonight will highlight her abilities in each of these roles. She regularly performs in bands led by forward-thinking artists like Mary Halvorson, but it’s an equally distinctive and revealing experience when Grand is at the helm. Joining Grand will be Kanoa Mendenhall on bass and Savannah Harris on drums. Swing by Dizzy’s tonight for this young artist’s Jazz at Lincoln Center debut, and enjoy an early glimpse at what’s sure to be a long and creatively rewarding career.

JOEL ROSS GOOD VIBES

Vibraphonist Joel Ross is one of our absolute favorite young artists, and it truly seems like every person who sees him feels the same. Always a huge hit with audiences and fellow musicians alike, Ross dazzles crowds with his technical virtuosity while also moving them with compelling musical statements. Ross regularly plays at Jazz at Lincoln Center as a sideman with a growing number of top bandleaders, and tonight will be his debut performance as a main set headliner. For the occasion he’s bringing his Good Vibes band (also the title of his soon-to-be-released debut album), an outstanding young group that plays a mix of beautiful originals and pieces by artists such as Ornette Coleman, Thelonious Monk, Ambrose Akinmusire, and Benny Golson. This show is an easy recommendation for listeners of all tastes and experience levels with jazz.

TROY ROBERTS ORGAN TRIO WITH SPECIAL GUEST CHRIS POTTER

Troy Roberts is a killer saxophonist and a wildly versatile musician. The musical company Roberts keeps speaks to the caliber and diversity of his gifts; at Dizzy’s Club alone, he’s played with such renowned and varied artists as Orrin Evans, Will Calhoun, Sarah McKenzie, Jeff “Tain” Watts, the Revive Big Band, and Joey DeFrancesco. And as the winner of four consecutive DownBeat awards as best jazz soloist, the critics love Roberts as much as his musical peers do. Tonight’s core group will be an organ trio showcasing the powerful command Roberts has developed within the unique format, thanks in part to his extensive work with one of the instrument’s greatest living players, Joey DeFrancesco. To top it off, the band also features fellow saxophone icon and popular headliner Chris Potter as a special guest. With two tenor titans and a Hammond B-3 organ played by Pat Bianchi, expect an evening of great instrumental jazz.

FREDDY COLE QUINTET: SONGS FOR LOVERS

Referred to as a “national treasure” by the Huffington Post, jazz pianist and singer Freddy Cole is a prolific artist of undisputed pedigree. Building his career at the same time as his brother, the iconic Nat “King” Cole, it was never going to be easy for Cole to establish his own musical identity. However, with 20 albums released in just the last 25 years, three of which were nominated for Grammy Awards, Cole has carved out a reputation as an individual and prolific force in the jazz world. Amongst the greatest contemporary crooners, Cole’s sensitivity and effortlessly powerful delivery make him an enduring favorite in our most intimate venue and a perfect artist to enjoy this Valentine’s Day week.

The world-renowned Brussels Jazz Orchestra brings a heartfelt new program to Dizzy’s Club along with singer extraordinaire Tutu Puoane. Through a rich, genre-crossing re-examination of popular protest music, the show celebrates human rights as well as the strength and comfort that music provides in the face of adversity. Bandleader Frank Vaganée and vocalist Tutu Puoane each selected their favorite protest songs from their own record collections, and the resulting repertoire is an eclectic assortment of pop, rock, soul, and jazz essentials with universal messages, all arranged anew for jazz orchestra. This powerful project has been touring Europe extensively, and these are the only dates currently scheduled for the United States, so catch this concert at Dizzy’s Club while you have the chance!

BRIAN CHARETTE: MUSIC FOR ORGAN SEXTETTE

The Brian Charette Organ Sextette is a funky take on the jazz organ band. Charette’s emphasis on creating music “more compositional, less soloistic, even though there are lots of solos” makes for a fast-paced performance, with a healthy balance of compositional intricacies and short, energetic solos. The Grammy Award–nominated Charette has worked with artists from Chaka Khan to Joni Mitchell, and he says this instrumental, woodwind-heavy sextet is “more informed by rock and hip hop than jazz.” Combined with Charette’s distinct and textural use of the organ, the Sextette – with drummer Jochen Rueckert, flutist Itali Kriss, clarinetist Karel Ruzicka, and saxophonists Mike DiRubbo and Kenny Brooks – has a tight, accessible, and highly danceable sound, while maintaining the subtlety and sophistication expected of jazz musicians.

The incomparable vocalist Kim Nalley sings jazz’s greatest love songs on Valentine’s Day. Treat yourself and your valentine with an unforgettable night of live jazz in front of a glittering New York skyline and a special prix-fixe menu. Returning to Jazz at Lincoln Center after sold-out runs in Dizzy’s Club and The Appel Room, Nalley packs an expansive vocal range that can go from operatic to gritty blues on a dime, channeling real emotion into blistering scat solos, hushed ballads, and everything in between. Jazz vocalists have long been a favorite source of romance on Valentine’s Day, and Kim Nalley takes it to the highest level.

The Juilliard School has been a destination for world-class music education since it was founded, and these incredible young musicians will exemplify that legacy in this performance. The Juilliard School Jazz Ensemble features some of the world’s most talented emerging jazz artists, many of whom are already professional musicians. No stranger to Dizzy’s Club, the ensemble has also performed at noted venues such as the Blue Note and Alice Tully Hall. These gifted young musicians are proof of jazz’s bright future, and tonight they will explore jazz music from the early-1970s and late-1980s that reflects the civil rights and social justice movements of their times, including pieces by Rashaan Roland Kirk, Eddie Harris, and Wes Montgomery.

JOHN CHIN QUINTET

Pianist John Chin makes his Dizzy’s Club debut as a bandleader, bringing his quintet and a selection of tunes drawn from his wonderfully diverse album Fifth. This Kenny Barron mentee employs a broad range of jazz, blues, pop, and Western classical influences as a spectrum, rather than reserving them for pre-determined contexts, giving each of his performances a real dynamism and emotional sincerity. Dreamy electric keyboard components add to a depth and space already masterfully wielded. Joining Chin will be saxophonists Tivon Pennicott and Stacy Dillard, bassist Sean Conly, and drummer Jaimeo Brown. Come along for the ride during the Dizzy’s Club premiere of the John Chin Quintet.

Prolific saxophonist David Binney is an unmissable creative force in contemporary jazz, and we’re excited to have him here in our club. A favorite bandmate among those lucky enough to have him (including David Bowie’s Blackstar band), Binney is a prolific sideman who has also produced more than 20 records as a leader. Not only a poll-topper based on his instrumental prowess, Binney is also an original composer of thoroughly modern yet still swinging music, and he has a great ability to bring the right musicians to each project. Tonight will be the Dizzy’s debut of his Angelino Quartet, featuring a group of Binney stalwarts with outstanding chemistry, including pianist Luka Mendoza and bassist Logan Kane.

WARREN WOLF QUARTET FEATURING JOE LOCKE
Passing The Torch: The Music Of Great Vibraphonists

Warren Wolf is a leading voice on the vibraphone and a protégé of all-time great vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson. Not only has he recently been a member of the elite SFJazz Collective and bands led by Christian McBride and Ted Nash, but he’s also an excellent small group leader himself, widely recognized for original new music steeped in the traditions of straight-ahead jazz and bop. Tonight’s tribute to the “great vibraphonists” features one of his fellow greats of modern jazz vibraphone: Joe Locke. Multiple-time winner of Jazz Journalists Association’s “Mallet Player of the Year” title, Locke is a soloist who approaches the instrument with incredible physical power and broad emotional range. Pianist Alex Brown, bassist Reuben Rogers, and drummer Rodney Green will also join Wolf and Locke on the Dizzy’s stage. This performance is a must-see for fans of the melodic and percussive instrument and an easy recommendation for anyone interested in swinging, contemporary jazz.

MATTHEW SHIPP TRIO
Signature Album Release

Singular pianist Matthew Shipp returns with his trio to celebrate the release of the group’s anticipated new album, Signature. Shipp is a daring composer and improviser who is well-versed in jazz tradition and theory but also draws from the world of contemporary classical music, leaning towards a modern dissonance that ranges from playful to aggressive. The ensuing moments of clarity and resolution in his music make it all-the-more stirring thanks to this thoughtful contrast. Tonight’s trio, featuring his regular bandmates Michael Bisio and Newman Taylor Baker, promises a powerful and unpredictable journey through sound that must be heard—and felt—to be understood. Shipp’s music respectfully challenges the listener but also makes it impossible to turn away, resulting in a uniquely rewarding and engaging experience for the audience.

Drummer, composer, and bandleader Allison Miller returns to Dizzy’s Club with her band Boom Tic Boom. The ensemble traverses an eclectic repertoire of Miller’s original pieces that show off her versatility as a drummer—ranging from hard-driving, rock-influenced drumming to freer, more decorative stretches. Across this range, audiences can expect to hear extended solos from her excellent band members, moments of group improvisation, and a collection of rhythmically and melodically complex tunes that are at once unpredictable and memorable. Tonight’s concert is an album release party for the band’s latest album, Glitter Wolf, and as well as the ten year anniversary celebration of the band.

BLACK ART JAZZ COLLECTIVE

Black Art Jazz Collective (BAJC) is a collaborative ensemble comprised of top-caliber instrumentalists – trumpeter Jeremy Pelt, saxophonist Wayne Escoffery, trombonist James Burton, pianist Xavier Davis, bassist Vicente Archer, and drummer Rodney Green. Each member is a leader in his own right and has also been an integral part of groups led by pioneers including Wayne Shorter, Tom Harrell, Bobby Hutcherson, Ron Carter, Louis Hayes, Freddie Hubbard, and many more. The BAJC performs fiery, expert post-bop originals dedicated to African American icons, and they have quickly established themselves as a significant new group with some rightfully high expectations.
