Jazz at Lincoln Center fills its halls with the sounds of the holidays every December. In addition to the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra’s decades-long Big Band Holidays tradition in Rose Theater, Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola’s holiday lineup will include Riley’s Red Hot Holidays (December 13), Barry Harris Trio (December 21–24), and Carlos Henriquez Octet (December 26–31 ); after ringing in 2018 with sold-out sets, Henriquez and his group return to usher in 2019 with special New Year’s Eve sets, complete with a prix fixe menu and party favors.
Additional highlights include Alexis Cuadrado Presents Shoes (December 5), as Cuadrado plays the original film score alongside the projection of the 1916 silent film, Shoes; Once in a Lifetime: Obba Babatundé and Friends (December 6); and Dick Hyman: Standards & Strides (December 17–18).

Hailed as “perhaps the best jazz singer singing today” by The New York Times, Mary Stallings is one of jazz’s most accomplished vocalists. Over the course of a nearly 60-year career, she has worked with the likes of Dizzy Gillespie, Count Basie, Harry “Sweets” Edison, Geri Allen, and more. The program will feature the world premiere of Zachary Rich’s Old News, commissioned by First Music. ALEXIS CUADRADO PRESENTS SHOES

Barcelona-born bassist Alexis Cuadrado is one of the most sought after musicians in New York. Though he has long been a distinguished sideman, Cuadrado’s output as a composer has also been significant in recent years, showcasing a distinctive voice that combines improvisation with through-composed music that draws on jazz, experimental, and flamenco influences. Tonight’s performance will be the world premiere of Cuadrado’s ambitious new project, a live score to Lois Weber’s iconic 1916 silent film, Shoes. The music will be performed alongside a large display of the silent film, adding a powerful new dimension to a 102-year-old cinematic classic. Joining Cuadrado will be vocalist Kavita Shah, trumpeter Linda Briceño, cellist Amy Kang, pianist Luis Perdomo, vibraphonist Christos Rafalides, and drummer Shirazette Tinnin.

Bassist Ben Allison is an adventurous and versatile composer known for his inspired arrangements, inventive grooves, and hummable melodies. Allison draws from jazz, rock, folk, 20th century classical, and various world music traditions, blending them into a cinematic, cohesive whole while also leaving plenty of room for spontaneous improvisation. His Think Free Quartet – with trumpeter Jeremy Pelt, guitarist Steve Cardenas, pianist Frank Kimbrough, and drummer Allan Mednard – focuses on melody, groove, and texture in equal measure, engaging in the kind of group interplay that has become one of Allison’s stylistic hallmarks. Each of their first three albums topped the jazz radio charts in the United States (often remaining in the top ten for months), and their latest, Layers of the City, has been met with overwhelming critical acclaim. Music fans looking for something totally unique yet readily accessible will find these sets particularly rewarding.

No stranger to Dizzy’s Club, the ensemble has also performed at noted venues such as the Blue Note and Alice Tully Hall. These gifted young musicians are proof of jazz’s bright future. Tonight they will dig into the seminal songbooks of jazz legends Lennie Tristano and Charlie Parker, two of the mid-20th century’s boldest musical minds.

SULLIVAN FORTNER TRIO

New Orleans’ Sullivan Fortner is one of the most promising young voices on piano. In 2015, the American Pianist Association named him its Cole Porter Fellow in Jazz, and he has worked extensively with Stefon Harris, Christian Scott, Roy Hargrove, John Scofield, members of the Marsalis family, and in duet with audience and critic favorite Cécile McLorin Salvant. Of Fortner and Salvant’s 2018 duet album, The Window, Variety says, “If there were such a thing as a Grammy for best jazz piano album, The Window should rightfully be up for that, too, because keyboardist Sullivan Fortner is an equal—and equally spectacular—partner through all 17 tracks, regardless of whether he gets cover billing.” Fortner is a regular on Jazz at Lincoln Center’s larger stages, and tonight’s performance will be his anticipated return to Dizzy’s Club as a bandleader, with bassist Ameen Saleem and drummer Jeremy “Bean” Clemons. This is top-notch piano jazz, and Fortner is an exceptional talent that any jazz fan should experience in person.

This swinging holiday show features a collective of New York’s finest rising stars. These musicians have all worked together extensively, their musicianship is impeccable, and their camaraderie and deep love for this music bring a real fire to the stage. Tonight’s music director is trumpeter Riley Mulherkar, who has directed several outstanding events at Jazz at Lincoln Center, including a Dizzy Gillespie career retrospective, a headlining performance by vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater, some swinging Mardi Gras celebrations, and Diane Schuur’s November 2018 concerts in The Appel Room. JOE FARNSWORTH QUARTET

Joe Farnsworth is regarded as one of the top jazz drummers in the world, but as far as he is concerned, he is just getting started. Farnsworth is dedicated to the great tradition of jazz drumming as conceived by artists like Max Roach, Roy Haynes, Elvin Jones, Billy Higgins, and Arthur Taylor, with whom he studied. A true jazz mainstay, Farnsworth has left his indelible mark on more than 70 albums with such diverse musicians as Wynton Marsalis, Cedar Walton, McCoy Tyner, Pharoah Sanders, Horace Silver, Diana Krall, and Benny Golson. Tonight’s performance features Farnsworth’s regular group of elite musicians, a prestigious band including Harold Mabern, Gerald Cannon, and Eric Alexander.

Dick Hyman is a national treasure whose career includes a nearly encyclopedic output of more than 100 albums, ranging from original piano and orchestral works to interpretations of classic American music, ragtime, and variants of stride piano. Despite the physically demanding nature of his repertoire, the 91-year-old pianist is rumored to never miss a note—and though that in no way defines his art, the rumor’s mere existence speaks volumes of his technical mastery. Hyman’s December performances at Dizzy’s Club have become a beloved tradition in recent years, and these intimate solo shows are a perfect opportunity to see the master perform some of America’s greatest music up close and in person.

NEA Jazz Master Jason Marsalis returns to Dizzy’s Club with the 21st Century Trad Band. Well known for his work as a drummer with artists like Marcus Roberts and the Marsalis Family, he has increasingly explored the vibraphone with virtuosity and creativity in recent years. With the 21st Century Trad Band, featuring Austin Johnson, Will Goble, and David Potter, Marsalis truly shines on the instrument. The group’s repertoire is fun, unpredictable, and widely appealing, offering a mix of straight-ahead jazz with a bit of funky New Orleans swagger.

89-year-old pianist Barry Harris is a living institution in jazz. An exemplary musician since the 1950s, he’s worked with the likes of Miles Davis, Max Roach, Coleman Hawkins, Dizzy Gillespie, Dexter Gordon, and Yusef Lateef. In addition to recording over 30 albums of his own across six decades, he has played on classic recordings like The Magnificent Thad Jones and Lee Morgan’s The Sidewinder. As vital as ever, Harris is an example of what makes New York City the jazz capital of the world; his live performances are widely celebrated yet down-to-earth affairs, and his weekly jazz workshops have made him an invaluable educational resource for musicians.

Carlos Henriquez is the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra’s bassist and “an emerging master in the Latin jazz idiom.” (DownBeat) This week at Dizzy’s, Henriquez and his all-star octet will ring in the New Year with a series of energetic concerts. Hailing from the Bronx, Henriquez is a rare virtuoso in both jazz and Afro-Cuban traditions and a vital voice in the infectious cultural fusion of Latin jazz. He has performed with greats like Tito Puente, Eddie Palmieri, and Celia Cruz since the age of 14, and he is a fan favorite both with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and as the leader of his own small groups. Henriquez regularly headlines concerts in The Appel Room and music directs shows in Rose Theater (including Rubén Blades’ historic performances with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra), so these shows at Dizzy’s are an exciting opportunity to experience his talents from right up close.
