Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Jazz For Young People concerts are some of the most engaging and fun afternoon concerts in the city, designed to entertain and inspire family audiences. In the first family concert of the season, Jazz at Lincoln Center celebrates the life and music of baritone vocalist Joe Williams (1918-1999) in Family Concert: Who is Joe Williams? in Rose Theater on Saturday, November 3 at 1pm and 3pm. Trombonist, composer, arranger and bandleader Vincent Gardner will serve as music director for the afternoon, leading the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with special guest vocalist Milton Suggs, and teaching families about Williams’ unique place in jazz.
Williams’ legendary voice and powerful sense of swing helped define the sound of the Count Basie Orchestra. He “gave the blues a new dimension,” as Duke Ellington famously wrote. Born in Georgia and raised in Chicago, he is best known for his work with the Count Basie Orchestra, sometimes singing alongside Sarah Vaughan or Ella Fitzgerald, and his signature song “Every Day (I Have the Blues).”
Born in Chicago, Milton Suggs is a third generation musician, beginning his musical training on piano and later incorporating voice. Suggs’ voice and approach to music are a reflection of the many great voices in black music and culture from the past century.
Family Concert: Who is Joe Williams? is an hour-long Jazz for Young People concert, and will take place in Rose Theater at Frederick P. Rose Hall, home of Jazz at Lincoln Center, located on Broadway at 60th Street in New York City. For additional information and to purchase tickets, visit jazz.org.
Jazz at Lincoln Center’s education programs drive the organization’s efforts to advance the appreciation, understanding, and performance of jazz. The programs have been developed under the guiding vision of Managing and Artistic Director Wynton Marsalis, who during his visits to schools throughout our nation observed that the caliber of jazz education was often inferior to that of other fine arts. In response, Jazz at Lincoln Center offers a continuum of jazz education programs that are designed to suit the varied interests and capabilities of children, teens, and adults. Students learn about jazz’s distinctly American heritage and history as well as its greatest musicians and compositions; they explore its connection to other art forms and study how to play jazz. Today, over two-thirds of Jazz at Lincoln Center’s programming is educational—reaching more than 1,000,000 individuals of all ages and experiences in all 50 states through concerts, webcasting, direct musical instruction and distribution of music scores free of charge.
Jazz at Lincoln Center’s 2018–19 concert season features living legends and the next generation of talent across multiple artistic mediums and traditions, all sharing their stage, experience, and vast generational knowledge. The season features 31 unique concert programs comprising over 90 performances in Rose Theater and The Appel Room, plus more than 350 nights of music in Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola and an extensive range of education and advocacy programs for all ages.
