Notable performances in Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola in the month of November include the release party for Myra Melford’s Snowy Egret’s long-awaited album The Other Side of Air (November 7–8); a unique two-part evening for the Israeli Jazz Celebration with Tali Rubinstein Mémoire and Uri Gurvich Quartet (November 14); the Terry Waldo Sextet’s tribute to the “King of Ragtime” pianist and composer Scott Joplin (November 26, what would have been Joplin’s 150th birthday); and the return of Ellis Marsalis Quintet (November 15–18) on the occasion of the NEA Jazz Master pianist’s 84th birthday celebration.
Wycliffe Gordon & Friends (November 21–25) also return for their annual Thanksgiving residency, with Adrian Cunningham, Corcoran Holt, Alvin Atkinson, Jr., and Chris Pattishall and Aaron Diehl splitting piano duty throughout the run. On Thanksgiving Day, November 22, Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola will serve a festive three-course prix-fixe Thanksgiving feast.

Ken Peplowski is a clarinetist and saxophonist cherished for keeping the fire bright in traditional swing styles and the Great American Songbook. JOEY CALDERAZZO TRIO
Album Release Concert

Pianist Joey Calderazzo is a highly respected musician throughout the jazz community whose debut album was produced by Michael Brecker when he was only 25 years old. He has led and played with many of the greats, including his longtime musical partner Branford Marsalis. Tonight, Calderazzo presents a trio at Dizzy’s Club to celebrate the release of his new live album. His previous album, also released right here at Dizzy’s, was a superb trio record of mostly originals and a few classics like “My Foolish Heart” and “Stars Fell on Alabama.” The originals were written without “too much structure,” emphasizing improvisation and group interplay as a means to expand on their foundational moods or sketches. This approach proved equally compelling in concert, and the new record features highlights painstakingly selected from over eight hours of live recorded material. Joining Calderazzo in celebration of this new album are trio mates Ben Wolfe on bass and Donald Edwards on drums, both of them thoughtful listeners and responsive improvisers who are first-call sidemen when they’re not leading (and selling out venues including Dizzy’s) with their own groups.

Myra Melford’s cutting-edge Snowy Egret quintet—featuring cornetist Ron Miles, guitarist Liberty Ellman, bassist Stomu Takeishi, and drummer Tyshawn Sorey—has drawn critical and audience adoration since it first soared onto the scene in 2012. The group is a perfect musical vehicle for Melford’s diverse musical concepts, blending her strong and distinctive writing with the bold individualism of the band members. Just a year after their public debut, Snowy Egret’s premiere performance of Melford’s multisensory Language of Dreams earned her a prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship. After releasing their debut record in 2015, the band toured extensively—including a coveted weeklong engagement at the Village Vanguard—and was named the Best Mid-Size Ensemble of 2016 by the Jazz Journalists Association. Vocalist and flutist Melanie Charles is taking New York’s music scenes by storm, earning serious respect and attention both within traditional jazz circles and far beyond them—appearing in the city’s jazz clubs or on Saturday Night Live and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, depending on the gig. Jazz at Lincoln Center regulars might recognize Charles from her 2017 Appel Room spotlight in Herlin Riley’s Crescent City Monk or, more recently, as the leader of an outstanding week of Late Night Sessions at Dizzy’s Club. Now, we’re thrilled to present Charles as a main set headliner for the first time. With a band comprised of pianist Luke Carlos O’Reilly, bassist Jonathan Michel, drummer Charles Haynes, saxophonist Godwin Louis, and special guest saxophonist Rogerst Charles, there’s a lot of talent to check out here.

SARAH MCKENZIE

After graduating from Berklee College of Music in just 18 months—on a full scholarship awarded through the Umbria Jazz Festival competition—vocalist, pianist, and composer Sarah McKenzie was quickly signed to the legendary Impulse! record label in 2015. Her first release on the label was We Could Be Lovers, which won the prestigious Bell Award as Best Australian Jazz Vocal Album. With repertoire featuring originals and arrangements of songs by Duke Ellington, Irving Berlin, Joni Mitchell, Johnny Mercer, the Gershwins, and more, it was a confident and well-received mix of straight-ahead and pop-tinged vocal jazz with an emphasis on the Great American Songbook. McKenzie, now living in Paris, returns to Dizzy’s Club with a new album under her name, Paris in the Rain, which celebrates her journey from Australia to the United States and her extended time in Europe. The record features new original material and also includes reinterpretations of classics chosen in honor of places that have had an impact on her (“When in Rome,” “Tea for Two,” and Jobim’s “Triste,” for example). Already known for her mature instrumental and vocal phrasing, this rising star has toured with artists like Michael Bublé, Chris Botti, and John Patitucci, and she has performed her own material with The Boston Pops at Symphony Hall.

TALI RUBINSTEIN MÉMOIRE
Israeli Jazz Celebration

Making her Jazz at Lincoln Center debut tonight is the internationally renowned recorder innovator and vocalist Tali Rubinstein. Born and raised in Israel, she studied at the country’s top music institutions and eventually attended Berklee College of Music on full scholarship, becoming the school’s first-ever recorder student. Rubinstein now collaborates with acclaimed artists from around the world, partaking in unique cross-cultural projects with Javier Limon, Anat Cohen, Tomatitio, Chick Corea, Chucho Valdéz, Pacio de Lucía’s original band, Lauth Sidiq, Shilpa Ananth, Jamey Haddad, and Shedrick Mitchell, in addition to dozens of Israel’s top musicians. Tonight’s 7:30pm set is your chance to see Rubinstein in a live performance while she’s here in the city.

URI GURVICH QUARTET
Israeli Jazz Celebration

Tonight’s 9:30pm set continues the Israeli Jazz Celebration with a performance by the Uri Gurvich Quartet, featuring Israeli saxophonist Uri Gurvich, Argentinean pianist Leo Genovese, Cuban drummer Francisco Mela, and New York’s own Edward Perez on bass. Each of these musicians has built a career from globe-spanning musical collaborations and is now an important player on the New York music scene. Gurvich was only 20 years old when he won Israel’s prestigious Jazz Player of the Year competition, and he has since worked with artists including Esperanza Spalding, John Zorn, Chris Potter, Avishai Cohen, Paquito D’Rivera, Anat Cohen, and Lionel Loueke. His group is a prime example of jazz transcending borders, and it honors Gurvich’s unique musical vision while also remaining unmistakably collaborative.

This specially selected group of young musicians travels and performs internationally, representing the core values and teachings of the BGJI. The George Colligan Trio is an all-star group of three utterly distinctive and versatile musicians. Led by award-winning composer, pianist, and all-around multi-instrumentalist George Colligan, the group also features Buster Williams (bandleader and long-time sideman with Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis, Jimmy Heath, Betty Carter, and many more) and Lenny White (bandleader and, most famously, drummer in Chick Corea’s Return to Forever). Not only is each member an A-list bandleader and adaptable sideman, but the three of them have extensive experience working together; Colligan’s most recent Dizzy’s Club appearance was as a member of Buster Williams’ Something More band—also featuring Lenny White on the drums. It’s always a pleasure to welcome back this former star of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and the Wynton Marsalis Septet. Continuing our popular tradition, Gordon – with Adrian Cunningham on reeds/vocals, Aaron Diehl on piano, Corcoran Holt on bass, and Alvin Atkinson, Jr. on drums – kicks off the holiday season with a five-night stay at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola with and a special performance on Thanksgiving. Terry Waldo, an undisputed master of stride and ragtime piano, makes an anticipated return to Dizzy’s Club after selling out the club with his Gotham City Band a few years back. A musician and performer first and foremost, Waldo is also a renowned educator and a recent instructor at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Swing University. Academic and dry, he is not; Waldo has a well-earned reputation for bringing laugh-out-loud humor to live concert settings in the vein of performers like Fats Waller. In honor of what would have been Scott Joplin’s 150th birthday, join him at Dizzy’s for an energetic evening of ragtime. Jazz composer, arranger, and conductor David Berger is recognized internationally as a leading authority on the music of Duke Ellington and the Swing Era. Conductor and arranger for the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra from its inception in 1988 through 1994, Berger has transcribed over 750 full scores of classic recordings, including more than 500 works by Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn in addition to hundreds of other jazz recordings. The 15-piece David Berger Jazz Orchestra (DBJO) was formed in 1996 to tour Berger’s and choreographer Donald Byrd’s Harlem Nutcracker show, and the band has stayed together to continue performing Berger’s music. Tonight, the DBJO and special guest saxophonist Harry Allen celebrate the “Four Brothers” in a tribute to four iconic saxophonists who rose to prominence in the late 1940s and early 1950s, and whose careers continued to be intertwined over the next four decades. Stan Getz, Zoot Sims, Al Cohn, and Gerry Mulligan were most significantly influenced by Lester Young, but each of them found his own unique voice. Berger has taken 24 of their signature small group recordings and arranged them for the DBJO while maintaining the spirit and character that made this music central to the jazz canon.

MARY STALLINGS WITH THE EMMET COHEN TRIO

Mary Stallings is one of jazz’s most accomplished vocalists. Over the course of a nearly 60-year career, she has worked with the likes of Dizzy Gillespie, Count Basie, Harry “Sweets” Edison, Geri Allen, and more. We’ve been honored to present her at Jazz at Lincoln Center on a few special occasions before; Don’t Look Back, her album recorded live right here at Dizzy’s Club, was described as “mature, modern jazz singing for lovers and those looking for love, by a vocal artist great enough to help you find and keep it.” (New York Daily News) Tonight, Stallings will perform with the Emmet Cohen Trio, comprised of three of jazz’s biggest rising stars and emerging leaders: pianist Emmet Cohen, drummer Kyle Poole, and bassist Russell Hall, who also headlines The Appel Room in October 2018.
