October at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola is punctuated by two celebrations of Thelonious Monk: Frank Carlberg Large Ensemble: Monk Dreams, Hallucinations and Nightmares (October 8), performing two days before Monk’s birthday; and Mostly Monk with the Mike LeDonne Trio (October 26–27) as part of Jazz at Lincoln Center’s annual Thelonious Monk Festival. Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola also welcomes back the fifth Jazztopad Festival collaboration presenting Polish jazz artists Piotr Orzechowski and the Kuba Więcek Trio (October 3). In addition, Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra members Dan Nimmer and Carlos Henriquez showcase their unique programs in small group settings, starting with Dan Nimmer Trio (October 16–17) followed by Carlos Henriquez Octet: The Latin Side of Dizzy (October 21).

Mixed Feelings Album Release Concert

Pianist, vocalist, and composer Abelita Mateus is a rising star in the next generation of Brazilian jazz. Mateus is the current pianist for the Dizzy Gillespie Afro-Cuban Experience, and she has performed with Paquito D’Rivera, John Lee, Eric Alexander, Larry Coryell, Claudio Roditi, Hermeto Pascoal, and many others. Her debut album, Vivenda, came out just last year in 2017 and reached No. 24 on the Jazz Week charts. Tonight will be the official album release show for her new recording, entitled Mixed Feelings, and she’s bringing many of the same musicians featured on the record. It’s a personal album from Mateus that also speaks to a core component of the blues that Jazz at Lincoln Center celebrates: persistent optimism in the face of adversity and uncertainty. The Jazztopad Festival brings some of Poland’s most profound musicians to New York. It is a must-see showcase for anyone interested in the world of jazz and improvised music. For this program, each set will be split between solo pianist Piotr Orzechowski and the Kuba Więcek Trio. Orzechowski is a stunning solo pianist who won 1st Prize in the prestigious Montreux Jazz Solo Piano Competition. His portion of the set will be a remarkable display of piano artistry that will speak equally to fans of jazz and classical music. For the second half of the show, audiences will enjoy the Kuba Więcek Trio. Więcek is an alto saxophonist who was educated in Poland, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, and New York, and he has performed with such New York luminaries as Mike Stern, Ralph Alessi, and Gilad Hekselman. For his recently released debut album, he cites such diverse influences as Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Steve Reich, Brian Eno, Tom Waits, Bon Iver, Flying Lotus, and Kanye West in addition to European folk and classical music. Both artists featured this evening are absolutely distinctive while also exemplifying Polish jazz’s powerful blend of classic romanticism and bold modernism.

Keep Your Soul Together: The Music of Freddie Hubbard

Willie Jones III is one of the world’s top jazz drummers, known both for his distinct style of rhythmic expression and for honoring monumental influences such as Philly Joe Jones, Art Blakey, and Billy Higgins. Jones has a storied background as a sideman with artists including Herbie Hancock, Roy Hargrove, Hank Jones, and Cedar Walton, but for the past couple of decades he’s also been producing records—both his own and those of notable contemporaries—on his WJ3 label, with a strong emphasis on swing and traditional jazz rhythms. Tonight, Jones will premiere a project called Keep Your Soul Together: The Music of Freddie Hubbard, honoring the Freddie Hubbard Songbook on what would be his 80th birthday year. The group will perform originals by Hubbard including “Nostrand and Fulton,” “Take It To the Ozone,” “Hub Tones,” “Lament for Booker,” “Karioka,” “Asiatic Raes” and “I Wished I Knew,” as well as Hubbard’s renditions of Stevie Wonder’s “Black Maybe,” and his arrangement of Linda and Paul McCartney’s “Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey.”

Frank Carlberg Large Ensemble’s Monk Dreams, Hallucinations and Nightmares returns to Dizzy’s with new perspectives on Monk’s music—and on large ensemble composition in general. The project, which recently earned an exceptionally rare five-star review in DownBeat magazine, is not intended as a formal Thelonious Monk tribute, but rather, as Carlberg describes it, “a celebration of the beauty and vitality of his music.” Aside from ‘”Round Midnight,” Carlberg’s pieces are new compositions, not Monk arrangements, and yet Monk’s tunes are directly quoted and paraphrased throughout. Artists often include such allusions, and even sometimes quotations, of masterworks from previous generations in their respective mediums, but it’s uniquely rewarding to experience it in such a direct fashion, literally hearing the inspiration and the result together as one. This is music “in the orbit of Monk… infected by, informed by, in awe of Monk.” The show’s return to Dizzy’s Club will continue to celebrate the genius of Monk while forging new paths in modern music.

THE LITTLE GIANT AT 90–CELEBRATING JOHNNY GRIFFIN WITH THE MICHAEL WEISS QUARTET

Tenor saxophonist Johnny Griffin (1928–2008) came of age in the hard bop era in the 1950s and early-‘60s, working extensively with Thelonious Monk and Art Blakey and appearing on countless classic recordings. Griffin, who was short in physical stature but earned the nickname “the Little Giant” for his superhuman musical gifts, was celebrated not only for his technical virtuosity, but also for being one of the great personalities and individualists in jazz. Griffin was one of the soloists best able to communicate his personality through his instrument, which, in his case, was an exuberant expression of wit, humor, and aplomb. The Little Giant at 90—Celebrating Johnny Griffin will honor this milestone year by bringing together an all-star group of Griffin’s closest musical partners. A carefully selected program of classic Griffin compositions has been arranged exclusively for this project, to be played with authenticity and sincerity by these seasoned musicians. Michael Weiss, the show’s bandleader, pianist, composer, and arranger, was a key member of Griffin’s quartet from 1987 until his final U.S. appearance in 2005. Weiss contributed to four of Griffin’s recordings as pianist, arranger, and composer during this time and joined him annually on national and international tours.

A star in Cuba since his teen years, pianist Dayramir Gonzalez is now a New York resident with an international following. After becoming the first Cuban national to receive Berklee College of Music’s full Presidential Scholarship, he graduated in 2013 with the Wayne Shorter Award for Most Outstanding Composer of the Year. Gonzalez is now being championed by master musicians such as his mentor Chucho Valdés, who brought Gonzalez to Carnegie Hall as part of the Voices of Latin America series. Tonight Gonzalez will bring his longstanding group Habana enTRANCé to Dizzy’s Club to perform songs from his latest album, The Grand Concourse. The Afro-Cuban jazz record blends the pulse and mystique of New York with early 20th century Cuban music and the rhythms and sensuality of Yoruba musical traditions. It’s a repertoire with a variety of styles, tempos, and dynamics in which Gonzalez’ assured piano playing stands out alongside an unfailingly in-the-pocket band.

Matt Wilson, named 2018’s Musician of the Year by the Jazz Journalists Association, is a drummer and composer beloved by audiences, critics, and a seemingly endless list of premier contemporary musicians. In addition to his extraordinary instrumental skills, Wilson receives constant praise for being a bandleader and creative force who pushes both sidemen and genre boundaries alike, while remaining remarkably accessible in every context. Tonight’s performance will feature music from his recent album Honey and Salt, named 2018 Record of the Year by the Jazz Journalists Association. The album pays homage to poet Carl Sandberg through a series of songs inspired by and featuring Sandberg’s poetry. Neither the spoken word nor the music ever feels like an intrusion on the other, and that the outcome feels so organic speaks volumes of Wilson’s gifts as a composer. This is a special and unusually successful integration of artistic mediums.

Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra pianist Dan Nimmer has prodigious technique and an innate sense of swing that often recalls his own heroes—Oscar Peterson, Wynton Kelly, Erroll Garner, and Art Tatum. Nimmer joined the JLCO when he was only 23 years old, and he has released multiple albums as a leader with the Dan Nimmer Trio. Featuring some of New York’s most in-demand musicians, the Dan Nimmer Trio is a highly refined straight-ahead group that shows off Nimmer’s range and virtuosity in a more intimate setting.

Bassist Scott Colley is no stranger to Dizzy’s Club or Jazz at Lincoln Center’s larger stages, having performed here with the likes of Chris Potter, Joshua Redman, Joey Alexander, Ted Nash, and Eddie Daniels in just the past couple of years, but it’s a rare opportunity to have him as a bandleader. Tonight, we welcome the Scott Colley Quartet to our most intimate performance space. Colley’s broad repertoire includes a number of deep, yet accessible originals that always make great use of his top-notch band mates and provides them with an adaptable foundation upon which to build. Carlos Henriquez is the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra’s bassist and “an emerging master in the Latin jazz idiom.” (DownBeat) Tonight, on what would have been Dizzy Gillespie’s birthday, Henriquez celebrates the release of his new album and pays tribute to the trumpet master. As heard in transformative songs like “Manteca” and “A Night in Tunisia,” Gillespie integrated Cuban rhythms with the hot sounds of a modern jazz orchestra, becoming a leading pioneer in the infectious cultural fusion of Latin jazz—a tradition that Henriquez now embodies. Hailing from the Bronx, Henriquez is a rare virtuoso in both jazz and Afro-Cuban traditions, and he has performed with greats like Tito Puente, Eddie Palmieri, and Celia Cruz since the age of 14. Henriquez regularly headlines concerts in The Appel Room (including an earlier version of tonight’s Latin Side of Dizzy program), so these shows are an exciting opportunity to experience his distinctive talent in our most intimate setting while he honors one of the greatest artists in history.

Solla’s brand new 17-piece big band beautifully highlights his inventiveness as a composer, bringing together a progressive group of musicians well-versed in both jazz and tango traditions–and with the maturity to blend them with grace. The lineup is a “who’s who” of contemporary jazz and some of its neighboring sub-genres, but you’ve never heard them sound like this before. Paul Simon explains why you should check out Under One Sun, led by percussionist Jamey Haddad – “Jamey Haddad and I have been making music together for nearly 20 years. As a percussionist with a constellation of instruments from different cultures and continents, he fits into my band and provides the glue that makes it hang together rhythmically. He provides a similar service for this remarkable group. Under One Sun plays gentle swinging music composed by Billey Drewes and interpreted by members of the octet who come from three continents. Still, the music feels natural, with a sound solidly rooted in American jazz, incorporating Ali Paris’ qanun from Palestine and Billy Drewes’ saxophone from the U.S.”

Bassist Rodney Whitaker was a long-time member of both the Wynton Marsalis Septet and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, so it’s always exciting to welcome him back to the House of Swing. Tonight he’ll be leading an A-list band packed with major players from the New York jazz scene, including Freddie Hendrix, Ron Blake, Helen Sung, and Lewis Nash, all of whom have been popular headliners at Jazz at Lincoln Center. They’ll be joined by soulful vocalist Rockelle Fortin, who has been a go-to singer for Whitaker throughout multiple cities and festivals. Catch this group at Dizzy’s for a hard-swinging set full of improvised solos from veterans who still play like they have something to prove.

Pianist and organist Mike LeDonne is a modern master who in the past few decades has worked with Benny Goodman, Sonny Rollins, Milt Jackson, Dizzy Gillespie, Benny Golson, and more. Many of these musicians were among Thelonious Monk’s top collaborators, and tonight LeDonne will draw upon that musical proximity and his own instrumental kinship as he joins Jazz at Lincoln Center’s annual Monk Festival. Monk’s infectious music is a perfect platform for improvisation and ongoing re-imagination, and with 72 brilliant compositions from which to choose, a set of “mostly Monk” simply never gets old. LeDonne’s ace trio features Peter Washington on bass and Lewis Nash on drums, so it’s guaranteed to be a virtuosic set of swinging jazz.

This show in our small, elegant club will be the first opportunity to witness the live performance of this music supported by jazz lovers worldwide. To make it even more exciting, it will be the first-ever Dizzy’s Club performance by popular guitar virtuoso Kurt Rosenwinkel. The repertoire is a modern re-imagining of classic standards, which shines new light on the special traits of the originals while providing space for interaction and improvisation. Another star of tomorrow—Veronica Swift—will be featured on vocals, giving fans a chance to check her out in our smallest venue before she performs with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra in Rose Theater this December.

Trumpeter Josh Lawrence is one of the most compelling young bandleaders and composers in modern jazz. Each of his sets tonight will be split between two configurations that are sure to keep things interesting. The first half of the set will feature a quintet comprised of saxophonist Caleb Curtis, drummer Anwar Marshall, and the always magnificent Curtis Brothers—Luques Curtis and Zaccai Curtis—on bass and piano. After a few tunes, they’ll add Brent White on trombone and Adan Faulk on the Fender Rhodes keyboard for a performance of Lawrence’s Chamber Music America commission, “Lost Works.” This fast-paced concert format will provide audiences with a broad look at what this exciting young composer, trumpeter, and bandleader has to offer.

With Jazz in the New Harmonic, David Chesky fuses 21st century classical harmonies with the rhythms of the city to create a new style of jazz. Both in concert and in the studio, this project has received numerous awards for its provocative and cerebral approach to the classical/jazz blend. Chesky’s patient, angular harmonies are elevated by a solid groove in the group’s foundation, relying on heavy bass vamps from Peter Washington and a steady pulse from drummer Billy Drummond.

CRISTINA PATO QUARTET

Cristina Pato is a multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, and leading virtuoso on the Galician bagpipes (gaita). She has collaborated with the New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, Arturo O’Farril, Paquito D’Rivera, and dancers Damian Woetzel and Lil Buck. She is also an active member of Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble. Through both live performance and education, Pato is dedicated to cultural exchange and forging new paths for the Galician bagpipes. Her regular quartet, appearing tonight, features accordionist Julien Labro, dubbed “the next accordion star” by the Chicago Tribune; bassist Edward Perez, a commanding instrumentalist across jazz, Latin jazz, and south American music styles; and drummer Maurice Zottarelli a first-call band member in New York City and beyond.
