September marks the return of Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola’s ninth annual Generations in Jazz Festival. The Festival kicks off with Camille Thurman with the Darrell Green Trio on August 30, 2018, and closes out with Willie Jones III Quintet from October 4–7, 2018. This year marks one of the longest runs for the Festival, featuring 179 artists across generations with 34 unique programs over 39 nights.
Following opening night, the Lessons from Our Masters series returns for three nights, led by three jazz icons – George Coleman with the Emmet Cohen Trio (August 31); Josh Evans Quintet featuring Billy Harper (September 1); and Houston Person Quartet (September 2). The Flip Side Sessions this season pairs Henry Conerway III Trio with Goodwin Louis (September 4), offering two different sets of music in one night. Zaccai Curtis Orkestra (September 10) kicks off three Big Band Mondays, including Clockwise: The Music of Cedar Walton and the Ben Markley Big Band featuring Terrell Stafford (September 17); and Orrin Evans Captain Black Big Band (September 24).
Additional highlights include Trumpet Meets Latin America featuring Linda Briceño, Michael Rodriguez & Rachel Therrien in collaboration with the Festival of New Trumpet Music (September 5–6); Kurt Elling and Friends Celebrate Jon Hendricks with special guests Aria and Michele Hendricks, and Janis Siegel (September 7–8); Roy Haynes Fountain of Youth Band (September 13-15); Celebrating Cannonball’s 90th with special guest Jimmy Cobb (September 16); and Regina Carter & Xavier Davis (September 19). The Jazztopad Festival also returns with Piotr Orzechowski and Kuba Więcek Trio (October 3). The multi-talented Camille Thurman is an award-winning composer, formidable saxophonist, and second-place winner of the prestigious Sarah Vaughan Vocal Competition. She has performed with artists ranging from the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, Dr. Billy Taylor, George Coleman, Lew Tabackin, and George Benson to Chaka Khan, Alicia Keys, and Missy Elliot. Tonight she celebrates the release of her brand new album, Waiting for the Sunrise. If Thurman’s previous records are any indication, her newest release will be a stylistically varied mix of original and classic repertoire that highlights her chops as both a singer and instrumentalist; her 2017 live album featured songs by Sarah Vaughan, Wayne Shorter, Wes Montgomery, and others. Thurman is an equally talented vocalist as she is a saxophonist, and her performances as a bandleader are the best way to experience the full scope of her artistry.

The Lessons from Our Masters series features a master of jazz alongside a multigenerational band. Tonight’s young rhythm section is comprised of pianist/bandleader Emmet Cohen, bassist Russell Hall, and drummer Bryan Carter, three of jazz’s finest rising stars. They are first-call players not only among their peers, but also with master musicians of multiple generations, such as tonight’s headliner: NEA Jazz Master saxophonist George Coleman. Since the beginning of his remarkable career in the 1950s, working with Ray Charles, Max Roach, and Jimmy Smith, Coleman has been a central voice in modern jazz. During the 1960s Coleman made a number of records with Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Chet Baker, and Slide Hampton, and in the 1970s he recorded important sessions with the likes of Elvis Jones, Cedar Walton, and Charles Mingus (on one of Mingus’ final recordings), to name just a few of his accomplishments as a sideman. Meanwhile, Coleman has been leading his own groups for the past 40-plus years and shows no signs of slowing down. This performance will be a lesson from a true master—for both the audience and the dedicated young band.

The Lessons from Our Masters series features a master of jazz alongside a multigenerational band. Tonight’s master is tenor saxophonist Houston Person, widely considered the “soul jazz” standard-bearer. Person’s prolificacy is astounding; on top of being a celebrated and active sideman, he has released more than 75 albums as a leader over the past five decades. Of his latest record, released in 2017, JazzTimes wrote that “It is the sensual, slightly sweaty, blues-based groove they used to call soul-jazz. It was central to the jazz art form (and to its commercial viability in the 1960s)…When you hear an authentic voice of the genre like Person you remember how easy it is to like this music.” At Jazz at Lincoln Center, he recently performed sold-out shows in The Appel Room and played for Ben Webster’s Ertegun Jazz Hall of Fame inauguration.

Drummer Henry Conerway III has become a leading presence on the modern jazz scene since moving to New York in 2015. He’s worked regularly with the iconic Freddy Cole, Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra trumpeter Marcus Printup, vocalist extraordinaire Jazzmeia Horn, and many more luminaries across generations. This evening celebrates the release of Conerway’s new trio album, featuring compositions by pianist Kenny Banks, Jr. and arrangements by Conerway and bassist Kevin Smith. The title track, “With Pride for Dignity,” speaks to the experience of Africans in America, and new arrangements of songs such as Jimmy Heath’s “Gingerbread Boy,” Ray Brown’s “Slippery,” Phineas Newborn, Jr.’s “Sugar Ray,” and “Duke Ellington’s “Cottontail” speak to different chapters of this story. The record also features an arrangement of Marcus Printup’s “Hopscotch,” which Printup himself helped to arrange. Jazz at Lincoln Center collaborates with the Festival of New Trumpet Music—founded by renowned trumpeter Dave Douglas—to present today’s great young trumpeters. This year’s performance is a fresh exploration of Latin American music from Venezuela, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Colombia, and more, featuring arrangements and compositions by Linda Briceño, Michael Rodriguez, and Rachel Therrien. Each of them is an important trumpeter in the New York Latin music and jazz scenes, and this collaboration was specially formed for the Festival. Original pieces by each trumpeter will be premiered through the event in addition to new arrangements of classics such as Clifford Brown’s “Daahood” and Francisco Tarrega’s 1892 classical guitar piece “Capriccio Arabe.” Linda Briceño will also sing and perform her own original music and pieces by Dori Caymmi and Gonzalo Grau. An all-star band of Jim Snidero, Jeremy Pelt, Mike LeDonne, and Nat Reeves celebrates saxophone titan Cannonball Adderley with the help of a very special guest: NEA Jazz Master drummer Jimmy Cobb. Cobb worked extensively with Cannonball in the 1950s, and his powerfully swinging drumming is featured on a series of classic Cannonball albums. Cobb and Cannonball’s most famous pairing, however, is undoubtedly on Miles Davis’ 1959 landmark Kind of Blue. It is no exaggeration to say that together they made contributions that changed the history of jazz, and it’s an extraordinary opportunity to have Cobb involved in this celebratory performance. On top of this, the entire band is comprised of bandleaders who each sell out shows at Dizzy’s Club with their own groups. TODD MARCUS QUINTET

Baltimore bass clarinetist, composer, and bandleader Todd Marcus is one of the few jazz artists worldwide to focus exclusively on the bass clarinet, and that commitment has paid off. Marcus’ straight-ahead playing has carved out a unique voice for the instrument in modern jazz, and his music swings hard with a fiery and introspective intensity while also maintaining a strong lyrical sensibility. Self-taught in jazz theory and composition, Marcus’ compositions draw largely on straight-ahead jazz and classical influences, but in recent years he has increasingly explored Middle Eastern sounds from his Egyptian-American heritage. Tonight’s performance will be the New York debut of material from Marcus’ new album, On These Streets (A Baltimore Story) – he will be joined by guitarist Paul Bollenback, pianist Bruce Barth, bassist Kris Funn, and drummer Eric Kennedy. Beyond being an extraordinary musician, Marcus is also a community activist and leader of the West Baltimore non-profit Intersection of Change, “dedicated to delivering hope to often mean, generally misunderstood streets.” Marcus’ new album offers a musical portrait of his neighborhood of more than 20 years, a neighborhood recently thrust into the national spotlight following the death of resident Freddie Gray. With this new record, Marcus seeks to portray both the challenges and strengths of his community, and he will utilize a cathartic and uplifting expression of jazz as a means to convey this complex but ultimately hopeful message.

In this special co-headlining performance, Carter will play with piano virtuoso Xavier Davis. For his soon-to-be-released eighth album on ECM Records, The Other Side, pianist Tord Gustavsen returns to the piano trio setting that first brought him to worldwide attention in 2003. His website gets it right: “The elements of Gustavsen’s work remain intact—a paradoxical blend of simplicity, quietude, and sensuality built on the hymns of his youth, a Nordic kind of blues, and an instinct for composition.” He’ll be joined tonight by his trio mates from the recording: Sigurd Hole on bass and Gustavsen’s longstanding collaborator Jarle Vespestad on drums. Ted Rosenthal, a Long Island native, first gained international acclaim by winning the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano Competition in 1988. Both the album and tonight’s concert feature Rosenthal’s longstanding trio, an impeccable unit that does justice to Rosenthal’s skills as an arranger and deftly navigates his stunning reinterpretations of well-known classics. Mexican-born songstress Magos Herrera and the omnivorous string quartet Brooklyn Rider join forces for an unforgettable musical journey, reinterpreting classics from Mexico, Cuba, Peru, Chile, Brazil, Argentina, and Spain, celebrating such luminaries as Octavio Paz, Federico García Lorca, and Rubén Darío. For over a decade now, Brooklyn Rider’s endlessly eclectic repertoire and gripping performances have attracted legions of fans and earned rave reviews from classical, world, and rock critics alike. This project, featuring vocalist Magos Herrera, is their latest in a series of inspired collaborations. Herrera is regarded as one of the most alluring and expressive vocalists in contemporary Latin American jazz, known for eloquent improvisation and bold vocals. LOUIS HAYES: SERENADE TO HORACE SILVER

Master musician Louis Hayes is one of the most prolific jazz drummers of all time. While still in his teens in 1956, Louis Hayes moved to New York and joined the Horace Silver Quintet, spending the following years working with greats like John Coltrane and Curtis Fuller, and then joining Cannonball Adderley’s quintet in 1959. He has since become one of the most recorded drummers in history and one of the players most successful in navigating the changes in jazz since the hard bop era. Though his résumé also includes working with Sonny Rollins, Dizzy Gillespie, Yusef Lateef, Ravi Shankar, J.J. Johnson, Ray Brown, Wes Montgomery, and countless more, he has spent the last several decades as a leader, mobilizing some of the tightest and most cohesive groups in the business. Tonight’s extraordinary band is no exception, as they demonstrated here last year for Hayes’ 80th birthday celebration. That event also celebrated the release of Hayes’ Blue Note Records debut, Serenade for Horace, which pays tribute to one of Hayes’ greatest musical collaborators: the great Horace Silver. It was a predictably outstanding performance that left fans ready for more, and we’re excited to bring this program back for another three-night run at Dizzy’s Club.

ABELITA MATEUS AND FRIENDS
Mixed Feelings Album Release Concert

Pianist, vocalist, and composer Abelita Mateus is a rising star in the next generation of Brazilian jazz. Mateus is the current pianist for the Dizzy Gillespie Afro-Cuban Experience, and she has performed with Paquito D’Rivera, John Lee, Eric Alexander, Larry Coryell, Claudio Roditi, Hermeto Pascoal, and many others. Her debut album, Vivenda, came out just last year in 2017 and reached No. 24 on the Jazz Week charts. Tonight will be the official album release show for her new recording, entitled Mixed Feelings, and she’s bringing many of the same musicians featured on the record. It’s a personal album from Mateus that also speaks to a core component of the blues that Jazz at Lincoln Center celebrates: persistent optimism in the face of adversity and uncertainty. Join us at Dizzy’s to hear the latest in New York’s flourishing Brazilian jazz scene.

JAZZTOPAD FESTIVAL: PIOTR ORZECHOWSKI AND KUBA WIĘCEK TRIO

The annual Jazztopad Festival brings some of Poland’s most profound musicians to New York. It is a must-see showcase for anyone interested in the world of jazz and improvised music. For this year’s program, each set will be split between solo pianist Piotr Orzechowski and the Kuba Więcek Trio. Orzechowski is a stunning solo pianist who won 1st Prize in the prestigious Montreux Jazz Solo Piano Competition. His portion of the set will be a remarkable display of piano artistry that will speak equally to fans of jazz and classical music. For the second half of the show, audiences will enjoy the Kuba Więcek Trio. Więcek is an alto saxophonist who was educated in Poland, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, and New York, and he has performed with such New York luminaries as Mike Stern, Ralph Alessi, and Gilad Hekselman. For his recently released debut album, he cites such diverse influences as Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Steve Reich, Brian Eno, Tom Waits, Bon Iver, Flying Lotus, and Kanye West in addition to European folk and classical music. Both artists featured this evening are absolutely distinctive while also exemplifying Polish jazz’s powerful blend of classic romanticism and bold modernism.

WILLIE JONES III QUINTET
Keep Your Soul Together: The Music of Freddie Hubbard

Willie Jones III is one of the world’s top jazz drummers, known both for his distinct style of rhythmic expression and for honoring monumental influences such as Philly Joe Jones, Art Blakey, and Billy Higgins. Jones has a storied background as a sideman with artists including Herbie Hancock, Roy Hargrove, Hank Jones, and Cedar Walton, but for the past couple of decades he’s also been producing records—both his own and those of notable contemporaries—on his WJ3 label, with a strong emphasis on swing and traditional jazz rhythms. Tonight, Jones will premiere a project called Keep Your Soul Together: The Music of Freddie Hubbard, honoring the Freddie Hubbard Songbook on what would be his 80th birthday year. The group will perform originals by Hubbard including “Nostrand and Fulton,” “Take It To the Ozone,” “Hub Tones,” “Lament for Booker,” “Karioka,” “Asiatic Raes” and “I Wished I Knew,” as well as Hubbard’s renditions of Stevie Wonder’s “Black Maybe,” and his arrangement of Linda and Paul McCartney’s “Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey.”
