Summer favorites return to Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola in August, including Jazz House Kids with host Christian McBride (August 6); Jane Bunnett and Maqueque (August 8–9); Ted Nash Quintet (August 10–12); and Trio da Paz & Friends with Maucha Adnet, Harry Allen, and Claudio Roditi (August 14–19, August 21–26).
Dennis Lichtman makes his headlining debut at Dizzy’s with Dennis Lichtman’s Queensboro Six (August 1) – the evening marks the album release party for “Crossing the River,” which pays tribute to the historic jazz legends of Queens, New York, including Louis Armstrong, Clarence Williams, Fats Waller, Count Basie, among others. Violinist Meg Okura (August 20) and saxophonist/vocalist Camille Thurman (August 30) also celebrate their respective album releases. Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Leonard Bernstein Centennial celebration concludes with The Jonathan Ragonese Ensemble with special guest vocalist Micaela Diamond (August 13).

Dizzy’s Club kicks off August with an album release party for Dennis Lichtman and his Queensboro Six. With a swinging repertoire of originals and early jazz classics, the band pays tribute to historic jazz denizens of Queens, New York, including Louis Armstrong, Clarence Williams, Fats Waller, Billie Holiday, Count Basie, James P. Johnson, and Milt Hinton. It will be an evening of upbeat music rooted in the early jazz traditions of the 1920s and ‘30s, with special guest violinist Mazz Swift and vocalist Terry Wilson adding to the authentic vibe. In addition to being a masterful clarinetist, Lichtman, a Queens resident, is also a gifted storyteller and charming host, giving audiences just the right amount of history and humor to better connect with this easy-to-love music.

BEN WOLFE SEXTET FEATURING TOM HARRELL

Ben Wolfe is a Grammy Award–winning bassist and composer who “swings with authority,” according to Wynton Marsalis. Not only has he held long-term positions with artists including Harry Connick Jr., Diana Krall, and Marsalis, but Wolfe is also a prominent bandleader and recording artist who has long been praised for his eclectic output. Of his MAXJAZZ debut, No Strangers Here, the New York Times wrote: “In this music Mingus and Miles Davis meet Bartok and Bernard Herrmann.” Wolfe’s annual return to Dizzy’s Club is always an anticipated occasion, and he brings with him a new special guest every time. Recent appearances have included stars like Sean Jones, Randy Brecker, and Nicholas Payton, and this year audiences will enjoy trumpet genius Tom Harrell, who himself sold out seven consecutive shows at Dizzy’s in 2016.

Jazz House Kids (JHK) is a community-based arts organization that provides year-round musical, educational, and cultural programs to students, teachers, and adults from diverse backgrounds. JHK has developed combos and award-winning big bands (recently taking second place in Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Essentially Ellington competition), and many students continue their studies at the nation’s leading colleges and conservatories. Steel pan player Victor Provost is a jaw-dropping talent from Washington D.C. The young virtuoso tours with luminaries like NEA Jazz Master Paquito D’Rivera and Dion Parson, and he has received such accolades as Percussionist of the Year by the Washington City Paper—six years in a row. With a strong foundation in bebop and deep roots in Caribbean music, he primarily plays swinging jazz imbued with the unique sound and feel of steel pan as a leading voice. Provost is a key figure in Dion Parson’s ever-popular 21st Century Band, which performs at Dizzy’s Club every summer, but it’s a special treat to present Provost as a leader. Tonight he’ll be joined by his regular band members (including two thirds of Paquito D’Rivera’s rhythm section): drummer Billy Williams, pianist and keyboardist Alex Brown, and bassist Zach Brown.

JANE BUNNETT AND MAQUEQUE

Four-time JUNO Award winner, two-time Grammy Award nominee, and Officer of the Order of Canada, saxophonist and flutist Jane Bunnett has long been inspired by the music of Cuba. Bunnett blends intricate folkloric Afro-Cuban rhythms with contemporary jazz, and she has been credited with introducing North American audiences to Cuban greats like Pedrito Martinez, David Virelles, Dafnis Prieto, and Yosvany Terry. Her latest group, Maqueque, is a young, all-female sextet that she assembled in Cuba, and it has already received broad acclaim. Fresh off their Newport Jazz Festival debut, come check out Maqueque’s infectious blend of Cuban soul and modern jazz in this anticipated return to Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola.

TED NASH QUINTET

Saxophonist and composer Ted Nash is a vital part of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and a celebrated bandleader in his own right. Whether playing with Wynton Marsalis, his own Grammy Award-winning big band, or as a sideman in various small groups, Nash expertly pushes artistic boundaries while staying true to the fundamentals of jazz. Tonight’s performance is the album release party for Live at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola—Nash’s first live record in over 25 years—and his band is the same all-star lineup featured on the album: Warren Wolf, a young protégé of Bobby Hutcherson and a leading force on the vibraphone; Gary Versace, a prolific and versatile pianist; bassist Rufus Reid, long-recognized as one of the world’s best bassists, having played with everyone from Stan Getz to Dexter Gordon; and Matt Wilson, an endlessly creative and infectiously joyful drummer who regularly sells out Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola. Individually and collectively, this group is intensely creative, highly experienced, and easy to recommend for a wide variety of music fans.

New York’s celebration of the Leonard Bernstein centennial continues in Dizzy’s Club with Mosaic of Wonder: The Music of Leonard Bernstein. The show will be led by saxophonist and composer Jonathan Ragonese, an exceedingly versatile artist whose original work was featured in Jazz at Lincoln Center’s New Jazz Standards showcase. Now, with the Jonathan Ragonese Ensemble and to-be-announced special guests, he will share his own take on the timeless music written by one of the 20th century’s most broadly adored composers, Leonard Bernstein, on the occasion of Bernstein’s centennial.

MEG OKURA & THE PAN ASIAN JAZZ ENSEMBLE “IMA IMA” FEATURING TOM HARRELL

Violinist, vocalist, composer, bandleader, and 2018 Chamber Music America grant recipient Meg Okura presents Ima Ima. This is her fourth album of original works with the Pan Asian Jazz Ensemble, the ten-piece jazz chamber group that Okura has used to blend the sounds of East and West for more than a decade. Released on Mother’s Day, Okura’s latest album explores her new Jewish faith, Japanese heritage, passion for jazz, and love of family: “Ima” means “mom” in Hebrew and “now” in Japanese. Joining the multicultural ensemble is trumpeter Tom Harrell, a singular voice in contemporary jazz who has been named “trumpeter of the year” multiple times by DownBeat, recorded on over 260 albums, and worked with a long list of greats as both soloist and composer. With Okura’s broad stylistic range and compositional prowess, he makes a perfect addition to the award-winning ensemble.

DW JAZZ ORCHESTRA

The DW Jazz Orchestra is a brand new big band led by two hardworking students from Northwestern University: Louis Danowsky and Sam Wolsk. Following a successful fundraising campaign and a significant grant from the University, this ambitious pair recorded their debut album last year. The album is comprised entirely of new, previously unrecorded big band works composed by Danowsky, Wolsk, and their peers, showcasing promising young voices jazz from Chicago and New York. It’s not often that musicians this young have the talent, drive, and focus required to assemble, record, and travel with a jazz orchestra, and the passion they have brought to this project is remarkable.

WILLIAM PARKER: IN ORDER TO SURVIVE EXTENDED ENSEMBLE

Bronx-born bassist and composer William Parker has long been a key figure in the New York jazz scene and beyond, having recorded over 150 albums and collaborated with top musicians around the world. In recognition of his influence on the creative jazz scene for more than 40 years, he received the prestigious Doris Duke Performing Artist Award in 2013. His various projects cover an enormous stylistic range, and adventurous listeners are greatly rewarded.

CAMILLE THURMAN WITH DARRELL GREEN TRIO

The multitalented Camille Thurman is an award-winning composer, formidable saxophonist, and second-place winner of the prestigious Sarah Vaughan Vocal Competition. She has performed with artists ranging from the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, Dr. Billy Taylor, George Coleman, Lew Tabackin, and George Benson to Chaka Khan, Alicia Keys, and Missy Elliot. Tonight she celebrates the release of her brand new album. If Thurman’s other records are any indication, it’ll be a stylistically varied mix of original and classic repertoire that highlights her chops as both a singer and instrumentalist; her 2017 live album featured songs by Sarah Vaughan, Wayne Shorter, Wes Montgomery, and others. Thurman is equally talented a vocalist as she is a saxophonist, and her performances as a bandleader are the best way to enjoy the full scope of her artistry.
