Performances at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola in July celebrate jazz’s most influential artists and outstanding members of the jazz community during the three-night Ertegun Hall of Fame Festival. On International Jazz Appreciation Day, Jazz at Lincoln Center announced the 2018 Ertegun Jazz Hall of Fame class of inductees – Jimmie Blanton, Nat “King” Cole, and Nina Simone. The legacy of each inductee, selected by public vote, will be celebrated at curated sets on July 17–19, 2018 at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola. The festival kicks off with a tribute to Jimmie Blanton (July 17); followed by Shenel Johns and Vuyo Sotashe with special guests honoring the timeless stylings of Nina Simone (July 18); and the Freddy Cole Quartet celebrating the incandescent voice of Freddy’s brother, Nat “King” Cole (July 19).
In addition to these celebratory performances, Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola showcases an international roster of artists throughout July. Michael Pignéguy & The Awakening Ensemble (July 10) combines jazz with Arabic, Latin, and classical music. Musicians from Brazil join Roni Ben-Hur Quartet with special guest vocalist Joyce Moreno (July 13–15). The Jazz Afrika Sextet (July 23), a group of young musicians from South Africa, will honor Nelson Mandela’s centennial with musical traditions that captured the world’s attention near the end of Apartheid.
Notable performances also include the album release party for Jeff “Tain” Watts Travel Band (July 1), 65th birthday celebration of Jon Faddis (July 20–22); a 50-year career retrospective with the Stanley Cowell Quintet (July 24–25); and Grammy Award–winning vocalist Catherine Russell (July 26–29).

Jeff “Tain” Watts is one of the top drummers of our time. He spent his formative years touring and recording in the multi-Grammy Award–winning small groups of Wynton and Branford Marsalis and has since released a series of swinging albums under his own name. His propulsive and responsive drumming brings out the best in his bandmates, always a group of top-notch soloists. For three nights at Dizzy’s, Watts will celebrate the release of a brand new album with a truly distinctive band featuring guitarist Paul Bollenback and bassist Orlando le Fleming. We haven’t heard the repertoire yet, but if the past is any indication, audiences can expect a number of Watts’ original compositions in addition to a few favorite standards.

This is the only chance, at least for the foreseeable future, for New Yorkers to experience Michael Pignéguy’s one-of-a-kind Awakenings Ensemble live in concert. Australian composer and percussionist Pignéguy has spent more than ten years living in and around Doha, Qatar, and he’s now returning home to Australia after one final international showcase, culminating in a New York City showcase at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola. The Awakening Ensemble exists to create music with artists from around the globe, using jazz as a uniting element across an entire world of musical influences, including Arabic, Latin, jazz, and classical composition. The group is anchored by Pignéguy on the drums, Enrick Adam on guitar, and Yassine Ayari on the ney—a type of flute that has been featured prominently in music for 4,500–5,000 years, making it one of the world’s oldest instruments still in use. This core trio will be joined by special guest American musicians, including trumpeter Dominick Farinacci.

CLAUDIA ACUÑA: A TRIBUTE TO ABBEY LINCOLN

Singer-songwriter Claudia Acuña sings primarily in Spanish, but her soulful, crooning alto transcends any language with its powerful sense of freedom and heartfelt emotion. Born in Santiago, Chile, Acuña has built a flourishing career in New York City since moving here in 1995, and she’s now on jazz giant Branford Marsalis’ label, Marsalis Music. Acuña wasn’t well known when she moved here, but, like many aspiring jazz musicians who arrive in New York, she strove to immerse herself in the music, meet fellow musicians at the clubs, and take advantage of the city’s unique opportunities to learn from the greats. “I had the amazing blessing to meet one of my idols, which was Abbey Lincoln,” she told the New York City Jazz Record a few years ago. “She really opened her world to me. She had a lot of stories and experiences and thoughts. Just to be in her presence was a master class.”

Roni Ben-Hur is a formidable guitarist with deep musical roots both in jazz and in the music of Brazil. For this performance, he is bringing a group of musicians from Brazil to pay tribute to some of the country’s beloved composers. “Expect uplifting sambas, sensual bossa novas, and much more—all infused with a New York jazz spice,” he explains. “I am especially excited about our special guest, legendary songstress Joyce Moreno. A true master of this music, Joyce has been on the vanguard of the evolution of Brazilian music and has charmed people around the world for many decades. I feel very fortunate to share the stage with her, and it will be a memorable experience to everyone in the room to hear her.”

JON GORDON QUARTET

Saxophonist Jon Gordon has long been recognized as a formidable instrumentalist, having won the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition in 1996 and working with artists including Roy Eldridge, Maria Schneider, Clark Terry, Ben Monder, Harry Connick Jr., and Benny Carter, to name a few. He’s also a composer and bandleader well worth your attention. Gordon’s last couple of albums earned heaps of praise from fans and critics and made their way onto a number of “Top Ten Albums of the Year” lists; DownBeat magazine called Within Worlds (2008) one of the top ten albums of the decade, describing it as a “multifaceted statement that invites repeated investigations.”

STANLEY COWELL QUINTET
A 50-Year Retrospective of His Recordings and Songs

Eminent pianist Stanley Cowell started his jazz career in the 1960s, working with artists like Max Roach, Charles Tolliver, Bobby Hutcherson, and Stan Getz. Of that period of jazz—and of Cowell’s role in it—the New York Times noted an important balance that has always been a constant in Cowell’s art: “music both of reinvention and repertory…original, independent-minded work, comfortable with jazz tradition and common practice but not beholden to it.” The same can be said about every member of his A-list quintet. Tonight they’ll be looking back at the incredible body of work that Cowell has written and recorded over the past 50 years. It’s a combination of enduring originals and well-known tunes, and even the standards are often unique interpretations, broken down and reassembled anew to answer unasked questions like “what if Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie’s breakneck bebop burner ‘Anthropology’ was performed as a loosely timed ballad?”

CATHERINE RUSSELL

Grammy Award winner Catherine Russell has been one of the most widely recognized jazz vocalists since the release of her debut album in 2006. Her latest album, Harlem on My Mind, was nominated for the 2017 Best Jazz Vocal Album Grammy Award. Russell’s experience extends beyond releasing seven acclaimed albums as a solo artist; she has also worked with Steely Dan, David Bowie, Cyndi Lauper, Paul Simon, Jackson Browne, and Levon Helm. She joined the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis on its Big Band Holidays tour for the past two years, packing concert halls nationwide. Seeing Russell perform live is a truly uplifting experience and an easy recommendation for any fan of jazz vocals.

Benjamin has developed a reputation for energetic, genre-crossing performances, and she has played with musicians ranging from Jimmy Heath, Joanne Brackeen, Charenee Wade, and Harry Belafonte to Macy Gray, Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys, and The Roots. For this performance, she will lead her quartet through an evening of John Coltrane repertoire, celebrating and exploring one of her influences on the saxophone.

GABE SCHNIDER PRESENTS HAPA: LOVE STORIES

Gabe Schnider is one of New York’s most talented and promising young guitarists. This recent Juilliard graduate has already performed and/or recorded with Wynton Marsalis, James Moody, Joshua Bell, Dianne Reeves, Jon Batiste, Esperanza Spalding, and numerous others. He’s played on many of the world’s great stages—including at the 2016 Marciac Jazz Festival as a member of Wynton Marsalis’ “Young Stars of Jazz” band—and we’re lucky to have him as a regular at Jazz at Lincoln Center. Tonight he releases his debut album at Dizzy’s Club, featuring his own band that could rightly be called the “Young Stars of Jazz.” Entitled Hapa: Love Stories, the record is a multicultural musical narrative that chronicles Schnider’s parents’ journeys of leaving their homes in Hawaii and Switzerland and falling in love in New York City. Though it is a celebration of their life together, it is an offering to all in commemoration of the joys and hardships of leaving home and finding love along the way. Proceeds from the project benefit Camp Kesem Stanford, a weeklong summer camp fully created, managed, and run by passionate college student leaders and offered free to children who have been impacted by a parent’s cancer.
