The Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola stage in June showcases personal projects by members of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, including Ted Nash with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Youth Orchestra (June 4), Paul Nedzela Quartet (June 12-13), Victor Goines (June 14-17), and even former JLCO member Rodney Whitaker with the Band Director Academy Faculty Band (June 25). The month also features an eclectic mix of international music, including Dion Parson & 21st Century Band (June 8-10), in time for Caribbean Heritage Month; the return of the Jazztopad Festival with Maciej Obara Quartet (June 19); and jazz fused with Arabic rhythms with Tarek Yamani Trio (June 11), who will also be performing with Jazz at Lincoln Center for the first time. In addition, Sharel Cassity ELEKTRA (June 6) and Shamie Royston Trio (June 20) will also be celebrating their album releases in Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola this month.

Benny Green is a hard bop pianist carrying on the swinging jazz tradition. A former member of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, Green also learned under the tutelage of Betty Carter, Freddie Hubbard, and Ray Brown. This experience is evident in his playing and leadership. His internationally touring trio is a shining example of first-rate, no-frills hard bop that captures the driving energy of the canon’s best practitioners. This weekend of music will be a great introduction for jazz newcomers as well as an impressive showcase sure to please longtime fans of the music.

The Jazz at Lincoln Center Youth Orchestra (JLCYO) consists of 20 exceedingly talented and dedicated high school students in the tri-state area (NY, NJ, and CT). Members have the opportunity to enhance their musical education with the finest professional training and performance opportunities. The JLCYO rehearses weekly in Frederick P. Rose Hall, the state-of-the-art home of Jazz at Lincoln Center. During these rehearsals, students learn big band repertoire and performance techniques from JLCYO Directors Tatum Greenblatt and Ted Nash, as well as members of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Managing and Artistic Director, Wynton Marsalis.

ALEX SIPIAGIN SEXTET

Born and raised in Russia, Alex Sipiagin is an expert instrumentalist and a renowned composer and group leader. Sipiagin moved to New York City in 1990 after winning top honors in the Thelonious Monk Institute’s Louis Armstrong Competition, and he has since performed with such top artists as Michael Brecker, Dave Holland, Dr. John, Eric Clapton, and several of the Mingus bands. He recently made his Dizzy’s Club headlining debut during the Generations in Jazz Festival, and we’re excited to welcome this distinctive and distinguished musician back to the club. He’ll be bringing a powerhouse group featuring saxophonists Chris Potter and Will Vinson, pianist John Escreet, drummer Donald Edwards, and special guest vocalist Alina Engibaryan.

SHAREL CASSITY ELEKTRA

Acclaimed saxophonist, bandleader, and composer Sharel Cassity explores new directions with her electrified new project, “ELEKTRA.” Combining such genres as soul, jazz, rock, gospel, hip-hop, and electronica, ELEKTRA offers groove-heavy music consisting of artful originals and freshly reimagined compositions by Björk and Alicia Keys. Tonight’s album release party is a celebration of ELEKTRA’s debut recording, Evolve, a collection of music that reflects Cassity’s evolution as an artist and a person. The band features a cast of top New York City musicians, including guitarist Mark Whitfield, pianist Miki Hayama, bassist Jon Michel, and drummer Jonathan Barber.

The Showtime Band is a talented group of young musicians dedicated to the music of the Swing Era. The group is co-led by Felix Peikli, an internationally renowned clarinet sensation from Norway, and Joe Doubleday, an extraordinary vibraphonist and regular highlight at Jazz at Lincoln Center. They approach the time-tested sounds of classic swing music with stylistic authenticity and the prerequisite chops while still leaving room for a personal touch. Their last show at Dizzy’s Club was a Benny Goodman celebration that also featured pieces by Lionel Hampton, Teddy Wilson, and Gene Krupa.

DION PARSON & 21ST CENTURY BAND

Grammy Award–winning drummer and composer Dion Parson has now been leading the stellar 21st Century Band for 20 years. Together with saxophonist Ron Blake (of the legendary Saturday Night Live Band), Parson formed 21st Century Band in 1998 to showcase the music of the U.S. Virgin Islands. It has since developed an innovative sound that mixes Virgin Islands traditions, such as Quelbe, and Caribbean infusions, like reggae, calypso, soca, mento, ska, zouk, steel pan, chutney, and funk, with New Orleans and African overtones. This popular group sells out Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola every year, and we’re excited to welcome them back for three nights during Caribbean Heritage Month.

TAREK YAMANI TRIO

Tarek Yamani is a New York-based Lebanese American composer and pianist who recently made a big splash on the international music scene. Since winning the 2010 Thelonious Monk International Composer’s Competition, Yamani has twice been invited to perform among the world’s greatest musicians on International Jazz Day at the United Nations headquarters. He has also been a regular presence in New York’s cutting-edge music scene since he moved here in 2011, and he has been featured in many of the city’s top venues as both a headliner and sideman. As a self-taught musician dedicated to exploring the relationships between Western jazz and Arabic rhythms and melodic modes (maqams), Yamani offers a distinct and constantly evolving musical vision that will appeal to a broad range of audiences. Tonight’s performance will be his Jazz at Lincoln Center debut.

Baritone saxophonist Paul Nedzela is the youngest member of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis. His annual appearance at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola is always a swinging and virtuosic evening featuring a group of jazz heavy-hitters—often including fellow members of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. From original music to classic standards and a few lesser-known jazz gems, it’s always an outstanding set. This year he returns with the same quartet from last year, featuring JLCO pianist Dan Nimmer, bassist Dezron Douglas, and drummer Rodney Green.

VICTOR GOINES

Clarinetist, saxophonist, and composer Victor Goines is a protégé of Ellis Marsalis and one of the most respected musicians in jazz today. A member of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and the Wynton Marsalis Septet since 1993, Goines is also a gifted composer and bandleader with a number of acclaimed recordings to his name. His stylistic expertise covers practically the entire history of jazz, and his musical roots in New Orleans add an unmistakable flavor to everything he touches. As Goines’ fans know, he brings great tunes and world-class improvisation to every set. His recent Rose Theater and Appel Room showcases have been some of Jazz at Lincoln Center’s most popular events, making Goines’ return to Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola a highly anticipated performance.

MONDAY NIGHTS WITH WBGO: UPTOWN JAZZ TENTET

The Uptown Jazz Tentet is a dynamic large jazz ensembles founded in 2016 and co-led by trumpeter Brandon Lee and trombonists Willie Applewhite and James Burton III. The band includes some of the most venerable young sidemen in all of jazz, many of whom have been Dizzy’s Club headliners—trumpeter Tatum Greenblatt, alto saxophonist Andy Gutauskas, tenor saxophonist Jon Irabagon, baritone saxophonist Carl Maraghi, pianist Adam Birnbaum, bassist Clovis Nicolas, and drummer Aaron Kimmel. Influenced by the writing styles of Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn, Quincy Jones, Gil Evans, Wayne Shorter, the Wynton Marsalis Septet, and J.J. Johnson’s ten-piece band from the mid-1960s, the Uptown Jazz Tentet puts a fresh stamp on some jazz’s essential styles.

JAZZTOPAD FESTIVAL PRESENTS: MACIEJ OBARA QUARTET

Saxophonist and composer Maciej Obara returns to Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola as part of the annual Jazztopad Festival, which brings some of Poland’s most profound musicians to New York. Though Obara serves as the group’s primary composer, he notes that his themes “serve as outlines, from which our sound is set free… It’s more like composing in real time.” The Obara Quartet has been extremely successful with this approach, creating unforgettable musical journeys both live in concert and on record, as heard on their 2017 debut album on ECM. The material ranges from slow and sentimental to boldly frenetic, always held together by highly reactive and technically stunning musicianship. Obara’s group features fellow Polish musician, pianist Dominik Wania, and two of Norway’s most in-demand players, Ole Morten Vagan and Gard Nilssen.

Christian Sands is only 28 years old, but he’s been playing piano for the past 26 years and has five Grammy Award nominations under his belt. With support from The Frederick Loewe Foundation, Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola celebrates the great Lerner and Loewe musicals by revisiting Loewe’s timeless compositions in a swinging jazz context. This program will continue the popular and fruitful relationship between musical theater and jazz—a relationship in which Lerner and Loewe played an essential role. In 1956, Shelly Manne’s My Fair Lady became the first jazz album ever to consist entirely of songs from a single Broadway musical, and before long other jazz artists like Quincy Jones, Nat “King” Cole, Oscar Peterson, and Dick Hyman released their own takes on the Lerner and Loewe classic.
