Highlights include Denise Thimes (March 6-7); Duchess with vocalists Amy Cervini, Hilary Gardner and Melissa Stylianou (March 21); Miho Hazama and m_unit (March 25); Judy Carmichael Quartet with special guest Harry Allen (March 27-28); and the 25th anniversary celebration of DIVA Jazz Orchestra (March 29-April 1) with special guests Ingrid Jensen (March 29), Camille Thurman (March 30-31) and Anat Cohen (April 1). The Ladybugs (March 13-17), Dida Pelled (March 20-24), and Caili O’Doherty: Lil Hardin Armstrong Project (March 27-31) will lead Late Night Sessions at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, starting at 11:15pm Tuesday-Saturdays.
Additional highlights include the return of the Charles McPherson Quintet (March 1-4); Freddy Cole Quintet (March 15-18); the Brubeck Brothers Quartet (March 19-20); and the Flamenco Festival NY: DORANTES with Adam Ben Ezra and special guest Tim Ries (March 22-24).

CHARLES MCPHERSON QUINTET

The mighty Charles McPherson is a legendary bebop saxophonist who has been recording as a leader for 50 years. After moving to New York City in 1959, he played with Charles Mingus from 1960–1972 and has since performed around the world with his own groups and those of Lionel Hampton, Barry Harris, Art Farmer, James Moody, and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis. McPherson was greatly influenced by Charlie Parker (and featured in Clint Eastwood’s film Bird), and though he can readily channel the bop fury of Bird and his contemporaries, McPherson has also developed a powerful style of his own, both as a composer and elite soloist. He’s back at Dizzy’s Club with his quintet, featuring guitarist Yotam Silberstein, pianist Jeb Patton, drummer Jonathan Blake, and bassist Todd Coolman.

The New York Youth Symphony Jazz Band is considered one of the best ensembles of its kind. While celebrating the heritage of jazz, the group also values a progressive, emerging new sound. They will be joined by Vuyo Sotashe, a rising star of the international jazz scene, born in South Africa and based in New York, who was a recent finalist in the Thelonious Monk Institute International Jazz Vocal competition. Dizzy’s Club audiences will hear an exciting program of music from both continents, including classic big band repertoire from the American Songbook and newly commissioned arrangements of traditional Xhosa music. The show will also feature the premiere performance of “A Piece for the People” by Nate Sparks, one of jazz’s great young composers.

Vocalist Denise Thimes is a source of great pride for her hometown of St. Louis, but she’s earned fans from far beyond Missouri. When Queen Elizabeth II visited the United States in 2007, she personally elected Thimes to perform at her private diner gala with the President. Thimes’ mighty voice fills a room with ease, a gift that compliments her unwavering focus on melody and feeling. She’s bringing an outstanding quintet for these shows, including two recent Dizzy’s Club headliners: saxophonist Alexa Tarantino and trumpeter Bruce Harris.

This samba jazz showcase features three of Brazil’s most in-demand musicians, two of whom worked closely with the iconic Antonio Carlos Jobim. Drummer Duduka da Fonseca (of Trio da Paz), pianist Helio Alves, and vocalist Maucha Adnet are all experts in this music, each of them recognized internationally for expanding the worlds of jazz and Latin music.

The Jazz at Lincoln Center Youth Orchestra (JLCYO) consists of 20 exceedingly talented and dedicated high school students in the tri-state area (NY, NJ, and CT). Members have the opportunity to enhance their musical education with the finest professional training and performance opportunities. The JLCYO rehearses weekly in Frederick P. Rose Hall, the state-of-the-art home of Jazz at Lincoln Center. During these rehearsals, students learn big band repertoire and performance techniques from JLCYO Director Ted Nash, as well as members of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Managing and Artistic Director, Wynton Marsalis.

Drummer Akira Tana brings his Otonowa project to Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, honoring the seventh anniversary of the Tohoku, Japan earthquake and tsunami from which the region continues to recover. The music is soulful and swinging, a combination of originals and traditional Japanese music and pop melodies performed in a jazz context. The band tours northern Japan every year, playing free concerts in temporary housing and communities center and offering youth workshops, an ongoing testament to jazz as a healing, global language.

MARK SHERMAN QUARTET

Mark Sherman is an esteemed vibraphonist and composer who has worked with a wide range of artists, including Tony Bennett, Liza Minelli, Michael Brecker, Larry Coryell, and Kenny Barron. Sherman is also frequently heard on Broadway in productions like The Lion King and Footloose, as well as in a long list of blockbuster films. Rounding out an already full resume, Sherman is currently on faculty at The Juilliard School and runs Miles High Records. Audiences will hear why so many artists and industry elites keep selecting Sherman as their trusted vibraphonist, composer, or bandleader. He will be joined by the prolific pianist and composer Bruce Barth, an artist loved by a wide range of listeners—from Terence Blanchard who calls him “a force to be reckoned with,” to Tony Bennett who lists him as “one of my favorites.”

Referred to as a “national treasure” by the Huffington Post, jazz pianist and singer Freddy Cole is a prolific artist of undisputed pedigree. Building his career at the same time as his brother, the iconic Nat King Cole, it was never going to be easy for Cole to establish his own musical identity. However, with 20 albums released in the last 25 years, three of which were nominated for Grammy Awards, Cole has carved out a reputation as an individual and prolific force in the jazz world. Amongst the greatest contemporary crooners, Cole’s sensitivity and effortlessly powerful delivery make him an enduring favorite in our most intimate concert venue.

Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola welcome the Brubeck Brothers Quartet, comprised of members of one of America’s most accomplished musical families. Dan and Chris Brubeck, along with Mike DeMicco and Chuck Lamb, form a dynamic quartet that performs a seriously hard-swinging set. The quartet’s style is rooted in straight-ahead jazz, but their concerts reveal an inherent ability to explore and play with odd time signatures, while naturally integrating the influences of funk, blues, and world music.

DUCHESS

Duchess is an outstanding young vocal trio boasting vocal harmonies that are technically challenging and yet always easy on the ears. Duchess will use their signature blend of charm and humor to celebrate a century of vocal harmony. They will perform repertoire made famous in the 1920s and ‘30s by the Boswell Sisters; superstar vocal groups of the 1940s and ‘50s like the Andrews, Lennon, and McGuire Sisters; and “playful doo-wop inflected girl groups” of the 1960s, such as the Chordettes. Rather than performing straight takes on the classics, however, Duchess sings creative arrangements that are uniquely tailored for their voices and 21st century tastes.

Presented as part of the New York Flamenco Festival, this special program features three exceptional artists who have utilized multiple genres to break down barriers. Pianist Dorantes, known as the “Paco de Lucía of the keys,” gracefully combines classical, jazz, Celtic, and Brazilian influences, resulting in a unique style that has earned him fans and critical acclaim around the world. Bass phenomenon Adam Ben Ezra is a pioneer on the instrument who blends jazz, Latin, and Mediterranean music. Special guest Tim Ries is a saxophone titan who performs with top names in multiple genres, including the Rolling Stones, pianist Chano Dominguez, and flamenco dancer and choreographer Sara Baras. For three nights, Flamenco Meets Jazz at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola.

MIHO HAZAMA AND M_UNIT

Tokyo-born composer Miho Hazama is one of New York’s most distinctive young talents. Lauded in DownBeat as one of “25 for the Future,” Hazama is a classically-trained, jazz-oriented pianist with a bold and unique compositional voice. Her 13-piece jazz chamber orchestra m_unit includes strings, horns, woodwinds, and a piano/bass/drums rhythm section. The group moves fluidly through a distinct hybrid of big band jazz, contemporary classical music, and pop that gives ample attention to both swinging jazz solo sections and sweeping, through-written passages that make full use of the eclectic instrumentation. The music is well-written and full of surprises, the musicians are spectacular, and it’s all much more widely accessible than it might sound on paper, particularly for listeners without a lot of experience with jazz.

The Manhattan School of Music has long been a fixture of the New York music scene and prides itself as one of the first conservatories in the United States to acknowledge the prime importance of jazz as an art form. The Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra, led by multi-Grammy Award nominee Bobby Sanabria, boasts two separate Latin Grammy Award nominations, an exceptional accomplishment for a student ensemble that underscores its extraordinary pool of talent. Every time they come to Dizzy’s it’s a wild new experience; their most recent performance celebrated West Side Story’s 60th anniversary with a Latin jazz makeover, and this upcoming performance will present classic cartoon and television music in an Afro-Cuban big band context.

Judy Carmichael is a Grammy Award-nominated pianist, vocalist, and songwriter who has hosted Judy Carmichael’s Jazz Inspired on NPR for 18 years and counting. For well over 30 years she has been a stride piano master (nicknamed “Stride” by Count Basie himself), and she has given performances for the likes of Rod Stewart, Robert Redford, and Bill Clinton. Her Dizzy’s performance is a celebration of love songs both happy and sad, featuring her own witty compositions on the subject. Carmichael’s group will feature her writing partner—the great tenor saxophonist Harry Allen—as special guest.

During this special three-night engagement, each performance will celebrate the release of their new album, honoring 25 years of the DIVA Jazz Orchestra with all new tunes written by members of the band.
