New York, NY
(October 20, 2017) —

In December, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra’s own Sherman Irby will return to Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola with Sherman Irby: A New Christmas Story (December 20–24), following the 2016 debut of this family-friendly program. His band will feature vocalist Camille Thurman, trombonist Steve Turre, pianist Isaiah J. Thompson, bassist Gerald Cannon, and drummer Chris Beck. Additional highlights in December include the New York Youth Symphony Jazz Band: Ted Nash, Extended Works (December 11), exploring the music of Grammy Award-winning saxophonist and composer Ted Nash, a longtime member of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra; pianist Renee Rosnes with Monk Competition winning saxophonist Melissa Aldana, vibraphonist Steve Nelson, bassist Peter Washington and drummer Lenny White (December 7-10); trumpeter Marquis Hill with the great 86-year old Chicago-based pianist Willie Pickens (December 12-13); and the illustrious pianist Dick Hyman, returning to the Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola stage in Dick Hyman: Standards and Strides (December 18–19).

Following the Christmas holiday, Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra bassist Carlos Henriquez will lead us into the new year with his popular Carlos Henriquez Octet (December 26–30) featuring Melissa Aldana, Mike Rodriguez, Obed Calvaire, Marshall Gilkes, and additional guests artists. On December 31, Carlos Henriquez Octet will be joined by special guest Paquito D’Rivera for two special Latin jazz sets at 7:30pm and 11pm. Guests of the New Year’s Eve performances will enjoy a special menu included in the ticket price.

DECEMBER 2017 DIZZY’S CLUB COCA-COLA LINEUP:

PAULA WEST QUINTET
December 1–3 | 7:30pm & 9:30pm

Known for her mighty voice and unusually eclectic repertoire, Paula West is one of the top vocalists from the West Coast. She is no stranger to New York City, though; in addition to rare, yet always well-received shows in the city’s top clubs, Jazz at Lincoln Center audiences will surely remember her as the vocalist from the 2013 performance of Wynton Marsalis’ Pulitzer Prize-winning Blood on the Fields. In West’s own concerts, her diverse arrangements guarantee fun surprises around every corner and something to suit all tastes; from Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Cole Porter, and George Gershwin to Leonard Bernstein, David Bowie, Bob Dylan, and The Beatles, she honors a variety of classics while confidently taking them in her own direction.

JUILLIARD JAZZ ORCHESTRA AND THE TOM JOBIM YOUTH ORCHESTRA
Battle of the Bands
December 4 | 7:30pm & 9:30pm

A battle between two big bands is one of the liveliest events in music, and it is a tradition that presses artists to bring their absolute best to the stage. Tonight’s friendly competition pits a group of New York’s top emerging talents against a group of the best students from the School of Music of São Paulo. Both bands are full of young artists hungry to prove themselves individually, but their world-class training prepares them for the ultimate goal of teamwork and unified excellence.

OMER AVITAL QUINTET
December 5-6 | 7:30pm & 9:30pm
Composer and bassist Omer Avital makes his long-awaited return to Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola. Born in Israel to Moroccan and Yemeni parents, Avital has lived in New York for the past 25 years, and he has become one of the most distinctive and influential musicians combining Western jazz with soulful musical traditions from the Middle East and beyond. Highly respected as a versatile and musically mature bassist, Avital is at his best when given the opportunity to showcase his own groups, original compositions, and arrangements. His range and command as a composer continue to expand; his most recent album, for example, is rooted in jazz but incorporates Israeli folk music, funk, Afro-beat, and various Latin styles with apparent ease. For both hardcore jazz fans and general music lovers, Avital is a broadly appealing artist well worth checking out.

RENEE ROSNES DEEP IN BLUE
FEATURING MELISSA ALDANA, STEVE NELSON (12/7–12/8), PETER WASHINGTON, AND LENNY WHITE

One of the premiere pianists and composers of her generation, Renee Rosnes has toured and recorded with legendary musicians James Moody, Joe Henderson, Wayne Shorter, JJ Johnson, Bobby Hutcherson, the SFJAZZ Collective, and her husband, pianist Bill Charlap. A New York City staple for years, every member of Rosnes’ group has an extremely impressive résumé and brings their absolute best to this group. If her recent sold-out appearances at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola are any indication, audiences should expect to hear some of Rosnes’ award-winning original compositions and perhaps a few choice selections by such artists as Bill Evans, Thelonious Monk, and Billy Strayhorn.

NEW YORK YOUTH SYMPHONY: TED NASH, EXTENDED WORKS
December 11 | 7:30pm & 9:30pm

The New York Youth Symphony Jazz Band is one of the best ensembles of its kind. The members of this group range from early teens to early 20s, making the quality of their sound even more astonishing. While celebrating the heritage of jazz, the group also values a progressive, emerging new sound. Tonight, the NYYS Jazz Band explores the music of Grammy Award-winning saxophonist and composer Ted Nash, a longtime member of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. Selections will include excepts from Nash’s Presidential Suite, exploring great 20th century political speeches dealing with the theme of freedom, and Portrait in Seven Shades, inspired by the paintings of Monet, Dali, Matisse, Picasso, and others. The concert will also feature the premiere of Andrew Karboski’s Groovement.

MARQUIS HILL BLACKTET WITH SPECIAL GUEST WILLIE PICKENS
December 12–13  | 7:30pm & 9:30pm

Trumpeter Marquis Hill, already a local hero in Chicago, has gained even more recognition throughout the jazz world since winning the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Trumpet Competition in 2014. Hill’s primary band, his Blacktet, is a superb young group with a tightly knit sound representative of their considerable performance experience. With original compositions boasting memorable melodies, exciting solos, and a kinetic, propulsive rhythm section, the Blacktet is an easy recommendation for both classic jazz fans and those interested in contemporary fusions increasingly explored by young, genre-crossing composers. Joining the Blacktet tonight is a very special guest and one of Hill’s personal mentors: 86-year-old pianist Willie Pickens.

Trumpeter, singer, and songwriter Bria Skonberg is a local favorite taking her place in the jazz/pop lineage pioneered by artists like Harry Connick, Jr., Diana Krall, and Michael Bublé. Skonberg’s music is imbued with a hip, hot jazz vibe that keeps the energy high and provides ample opportunity to let loose with solos. Skonberg’s recent sold-out appearances at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola have included an evening of love songs from the Big Easy and a celebration of her Juno Award-winning debut album, Bria.

The musicianship is impeccable, and their camaraderie and deep love for this music bring a real fire to the shows they put together. DICK HYMAN: STANDARDS AND STRIDES
December 18–19 | 7:30pm & 9:30pm

Dick Hyman is a true national treasure whose career includes a nearly encyclopedic output of more than 100 albums, ranging from original piano and orchestral works to interpretations of classic American music, ragtime, and variants of stride piano. The 90-year-old pianist is rumored to never miss a note, and while that in no way defines his art, the rumor’s mere existence in the context of such demanding music speaks volumes of his technical mastery. Hyman was recently featured on the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis’ latest album, Handful of Keys, and these intimate solo performances at Dizzy’s Club are a perfect opportunity to see the master perform some of America’s greatest music up close and in person.
