In November, Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola will be filled with unique programs, kicking off the month with Dan Nimmer on November 1-2 as the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra pianist leads his own trio. Additional highlights include a Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola headlining debut by Sullivan Fortner Quartet (November 9), who returns as a leader after performing with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis during the 30th anniversary opening weekend; the Israeli Jazz Celebration with Guy Mintus Trio and Yotam Ben-Or Quartet (November 8); the centennial celebration of Leonard Bernstein with Bobby Sanabria Multiverse Big Band: West Side Story at 60 Reimagined (November 17-19), the first professional presentation of this project; Dayna Stephens Quintet featuring Taylor Eigsti, Peter Bernstein, Ben Street, and Billy Hart (November 28-29); and a special performance on Thanksgiving Day with Wycliffe Gordon & His International All-Stars for the fifth year in a row.

Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (JLCO) pianist Dan Nimmer has prodigious technique and an innate sense of swing that often recalls his own heroes—Oscar Peterson, Wynton Kelly, Erroll Garner, and Art Tatum. Nimmer joined the JLCO when he was only 23 years old, and he has released multiple albums as a leader with the Dan Nimmer Trio. Featuring two of New York’s most in-demand musicians, bassist Peter Washington and drummer Rodney Green, the Dan Nimmer Trio is a highly refined straight-ahead group that shows off Nimmer’s range and virtuosity in a more intimate setting.

Brazilian guitarist, vocalist, and composer Vinicius Cantuaria is a highly respected figure internationally and in New York’s jazz and contemporary music scenes. Cantuaria has recorded as a leader since the early 1980s, creating an extraordinary body of work that unites jazz and bossa nova listeners, but any music fan will appreciate the seemingly effortless musicianship on display here.

TRIANGULAR: THE RALPH PETERSON TRIO FEATURING THE CURTIS BROTHERS

Powerhouse drummer Ralph Peterson was the last drummer selected for Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, and he has since led a consistently excellent career and worked with dozens of top musicians from the 1980s through today. Last year, he debuted the latest album in his acclaimed Tri-Angular series alongside Luques and Zaccai Curtis, known together as the Curtis Brothers. The pair has made a mark in jazz and Latin music by exploring the blues harmonies and swing rhythms of the Africa-Caribbean-New Orleans lineage that make for a distinct and irresistible fusion, and their versatility has made them first-call sidemen in a variety of settings.

The Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola Israeli Jazz Celebration kicks off with a performance by the Guy Mintus Trio, an exciting group formed in 2013 when its members were still students. Across an ambitious, varied repertoire, the group stays true to its own impulses and influences; whether they are playing jazz standards, free improvisation, film music, pop hits, original numbers by award-winning composer Mintus, or folk songs from Israel, Turkey, and Greece, they approach each piece “without getting attached to the musical style from which they came,” treating compositions like puzzles that can be deconstructed and reassembled as new group statements. This set will be Mintus’ Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola debut.

YOTAM BEN-OR QUARTET
Israeli Jazz Celebration

The Israeli Jazz Celebration continues with a set by harmonica player and composer Yotam Ben-Or. Since moving to New York in 2014 (after winning a full scholarship to The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music), Ben-Or has continued to build upon his international reputation as a rare and rising talent on the harmonica. Ben-Or’s music defies easy genre categorization, but it is uplifting, highly melodic, and swings with some fun rhythmic nuances.

SULLIVAN FORTNER QUARTET

New Orleans’ Sullivan Fortner is one of the most promising young voices on piano. In 2015, the American Pianist Association named him its Cole Porter Fellow in Jazz, and he has worked extensively with Stefon Harris, Christian Scott, Roy Hargrove, John Scofield, members of the Marsalis family, and in duet with Cécile McLorin Salvant. Already a regular performer on Jazz at Lincoln Center’s larger stages, he recently co-headlined a Thelonious Monk-themed concert in The Appel Room. This performance will be his first time as a leader in Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola. Fortner is an exceptional talent that any jazz fan should experience in person.

WARREN WOLF & THE WOLFPACK

Despite his relatively young age, Warren Wolf is widely regarded as a leading force on the vibraphone. A protégé of vibraphone great Bobby Hutcherson, he recently performed to rave reviews in Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Celebrating Bobby Hutcherson. Wolf has also been a member of Christian McBride’s Inside Straight and the SFJAZZ Collective, and he is an excellent small group leader whose debut album in 2005 featured Mulgrew Miller, Vicente Archer, and Kendrick Scott. These sets are highly recommended for those interested in new music steeped in the traditions of straight-ahead jazz and bop.

Neal Smith and Billy Pierce—each of them a renowned musician and Berklee faculty member— bring a group of Berklee’s top student instrumentalists and composers for a showcase at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola. The octet features a globe-spanning lineup of young talent: Rina Yamazaki (Japan), Dabin Ryu (Korea), Milena Alegria Casado Fauquet (Spain), Nathan See (United States), Tim Johnson (Norway), Giuseppe Cucchiara, (Italy), Garyfallia Kerkezou (Greece), and Jonathan Blanchette (United States). The group represents some of the world’s most promising young jazz musicians.

JEROME JENNINGS

Drummer Jerome Jennings has worked with jazz royalty like Hank Jones, Sonny Rollins, Ray Charles, Dee Dee Bridgewater, and Christian McBride, and has been a recent favorite at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola. From trios to big bands, Jennings’ deep pocket, versatility, and blazing chops have made him a first-call drummer. He is also an innovative and dedicated educator and a passionate scholar who proudly graduated from Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Swing University Jazz 301 course!

Percussionist, composer, educator, and multi-Grammy Award nominee Bobby Sanabria has been a staple of the Latin jazz community for over 30 years. On this special weekend during Puerto Rican heritage month, we celebrate Sanabria’s birthday with some great music! A recipient of countless awards and grants, Sanabria has played with such legends as Dizzy Gillespie, Tito Puente, and Mario Bauza, and he has been featured on numerous film soundtracks. Sanabria will be leading the big band from his recent album, Multiverse, which was nominated for two Grammy Awards. The performance will feature new takes on the music from Leonard Bernstein’s timeless Broadway masterpiece, West Side Story, which fused progressive big band jazz, lyric opera, modern dance, and Latin rhythms into a revolutionary musical experience that Sanabria will bring to life in a brand new fashion.

Vibraphone master Steve Nelson graces the Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola stage to salute one of his instrument’s all-time greats: Bobby Hutcherson. Though an esteemed and distinctive talent in his own right, Nelson is not shy about paying tribute to one of his biggest influences; he recently performed in The Appel Room for our Life of a Legend: Bobby Hutcherson concert, and he is a member of Cyrus Chestnut’s all-star “Salute to Bobby Hutcherson” quartet. Nelson is no stranger to Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, having performed here as a sideman in a wide variety of settings, and we’re excited to have him lead this special Monday night performance in honor of the game-changing vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson.

Tel Aviv-born guitarist Yotam Silberstein had already won the coveted “Israeli Jazz Player of The Year” title at the age of 21. Soon after, he performed at Italy’s renowned Umbria Jazz Festival, released a critically acclaimed debut album, and set out on an extensive tour of Europe and the Middle East. Upon receiving a scholarship to attend The New School in 2005, Silberstein moved to New York City and has since performed with such luminaries as James Moody, The Heath Brothers, and Paquito D’Rivera. It’s notoriously challenging for a jazz guitarist to climb the ranks like Silberstein, and it speaks to a high and multifaceted level of artistry to earn such acclaim at this speed. Wycliffe Gordon has done it once again, winning Trombonist of the Year (2017) from the Jazz Journalists Association. This former star of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and the Wynton Marsalis Septet kicks off the holiday season with a five-night stay at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola and a special performance on Thanksgiving. Wycliffe Gordon is the definition of a good time, and as Wynton Marsalis says, “just his presence is a creative experience.”

With Jazz in the New Harmonic, David Chesky fuses 21st century classical harmonies with the city’s rhythms to create a new genre of jazz. Both live and in the studio, this project has received numerous awards for its provocative and cerebral approach to the classical/jazz blend. Chesky’s patient, angular harmonies are elevated by a solid groove in the group’s foundation, relying on heavy bass vamps from Peter Washington and a steady pulse from drummer Billy Drummond.
