Jazz at Lincoln Center will host its eighth annual Coca-Cola Generations in Jazz Festival at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, September 1 – October 1. The Festival will showcase the diverse talents of artists across generations with 22 unique programs over 31 days.
“For the last eight years, the Coca-Cola Generations in Jazz Festival has unofficially marked the opening of Jazz at Lincoln Center’s concert season, as we celebrate the great diversity that makes our art form so vibrant,” says Jason Olaine, Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Director of Programming and Touring. “During the month of September, Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola will present living legends like Mary Stallings, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Harold Mabern and Paquito D’Rivera, as well as up-and-coming phenoms including Camille Thurman, Keyon Harrold, Brianna Thomas, Marquis Hill and Miki Yamanaka. You can experience the roaring energy of big band jazz with groups led by NEA Jazz Master Dave Liebman, Ryan Keberle and the Mambo Legends Orchestra, and also take in the small group interplay led by veterans Andrew Cyrille, Seamus Blake, and Steven Bernstein. This is the best month to truly experience how ‘all jazz is modern.’”
The Festival opens with the Lessons From Our Masters series. This year, it will highlight jazz veterans who deserve greater recognition, alongside multigenerational bands. Grassella Oliphant opens the Festival with a celebration of his 88th birthday on Friday, September 1. The Lessons From Our Masters series continues with pianist and vocalist Johnny O’Neal (September 2), followed by Toshiko Akiyoshi’s Trio (September 3) featuring NEA Jazz Master and pianist Toshiko Akiyoshi, bassist Steve Whipple, and drummer Tim Horner.
Big Band Mondays returns for a second year, following its successful launch during the 2016 Coca-Cola Generations in Jazz Festival. This year will feature three big bands – Ryan Keberle’s Big Band Living Legacy Project Celebrates Gerry Mulligan (September 4), The Dave Liebman Big Band conducted by Gunnar Mossblad Celebrates John Coltrane (September 18), and The Palladium Era featuring The Mambo Legends Orchestra (September 25).
Flip Side Sessions offer a unique opportunity to experience two completely different sets of music in one night during Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola’s 7:30pm and 9:30pm nightly sets. This year’s Flip Side Sessions pairs Bruce Williams Sextet (7:30pm) with the Allyn Johnson Quartet (9:30pm) on September 5; and the Yasushi Nakamura Trio (7:30pm) with Corcoran Holt (9:30pm) on September 19.
Additional highlights include the Harold Mabern Trio (September 8-10) featuring critically acclaimed 81-year-old pianist Harold Mabern with bassist Nat Reeves and drummer Joe Farnsworth; the Herlin Riley Quintet (September 15-17; Jazz at Lincoln Center’s season opening weekend) with drummer Herlin Riley, pianist Emmet Cohen, bassist Russell Hall, trumpeter Bruce Harris, and saxophonist Godwin Louis; San Francisco-based vocalist Mary Stallings (September 21-24); and two memorable nights of music in partnership with the Festival of New Trumpet Music (September 11-12) with trumpeters Keyon Harrold, Marquis Hill, Igmar Thomas, and Leron Thomas. NEA Jazz Master Paquito D’Rivera will close the Festival with Paquito D’Rivera Ensemble: The Latin Jazz Chronicles (September 29-October 1) – this is a rare opportunity to see the legend at work in the intimate setting of Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola.

The Lessons from Our Masters series features a master of jazz alongside a multigenerational band. Master drummer Grassella Oliphant kicks off this year’s series on his 88th birthday. This elder statesman played with Ahmad Jamal in 1952, Sarah Vaughan through the late 1950s, and released a couple of albums featuring heavyweights like Bobby Hutcherson, Clark Terry, and Grant Green. He then took a nearly 40-year hiatus from music before returning in 2010 as great as ever. Oliphant led a week of Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola Late Night Sessions in May 2017, prompting Jason Olaine, Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Director of Programming and Touring, to say “this was one of the best—if not THE best—sets of music I’ve seen in Dizzy’s so far this year. Right up there at the top.”

The Lessons from Our Masters series continues with pianist and vocalist Johnny O’Neal. In addition to playing the role of Art Tatum in Ray (2004), O’Neal is a favorite artist in clubs throughout New York City, and he has worked with Clark Terry, Ray Brown, Sonny Stitt, Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, Milt Jackson’s quartet, and more. In June 2016, O’Neal performed with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis as part of a high-profile Billy Strayhorn centennial celebration. The late, great Mulgrew Miller (himself an esteemed piano master) said of O’Neal: “There are so many outstanding things about Johnny’s playing… Number one: the touch. Johnny has a million dollar touch. Very few people touch the piano like that to get that kind of sound and feeling… The other thing is his feeling of swing, which is so natural. Then there’s Johnny’s personality—so engaging. And Johnny can play a ballad like few people, if any… He’s a very special artist.”

Still in his mid-30s, Ryan Keberle is already an astoundingly versatile musician. He has worked closely with a variety of artists including Wynton Marsalis, Maria Schneider, Alicia Keys, Beyoncé, and Sufjan Stevens—not to mention performing with the Saturday Night Live band, in Broadway orchestras, and on film soundtracks. Keberle’s Big Band Living Legacy Project celebrates and carries on the musical heritage of big band jazz, featuring original members of classic big bands led by Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Woody Herman, Buddy Rich, and Benny Goodman, and is the perfect group to kick off the 2017 Coca-Cola Generations in Jazz Festival’s Big Band Mondays series. This program is a celebration of Gerry Mulligan, a vastly influential saxophonist and composer, who would have turned 90 this year. In just the first five years of his career, Mulligan arranged and played with Miles Davis on Birth of the Cool, arranged for Stan Kenton, and formed an important piano-less quartet with Chet Baker. This timeless repertoire, and much more, will be brought to life through Ryan Keberle’s clever arrangements, passionate leadership, and expert big band.

The group performs early swing gems, songs by The Beatles, Don Redman, Ray Charles, Fats Waller, Sly & the Family Stone, and Prince, and some originals—all reinterpreted with the feel of an early 20th Century dance band that was somehow exposed to nearly an extra century’s worth of contemporary musical ideas.

This year’s performance has been curated by trumpeter Keyon Harrold, a first-call musician not only in the jazz world, but also with platinum-selling artists in R&B, pop, gospel, blues, and hip hop settings. He recently received the 2017 Grammy Award for Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media for the Miles Davis-inspired film Miles Ahead. Harrold will be joined by three extremely exciting trumpeters: Igmar Thomas, Leron Thomas, and last year’s FONT curator Marquis Hill, also the winner of the 2014 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Trumpet Competition.
