Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola announces its August 2017 lineup featuring a diverse array of Latin jazz programs, as well as debuts by bands and bandleaders: drummer Ulysses Owens, Jr.’s New Century Big Band, saxophonist Jane Bunnett and Maqueque, the Danowsky/Wolsk Jazz Orchestra, and Cuban pianist Axel Tosca.
Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola is located in Frederick P. Rose Hall, Home of Jazz at Lincoln Center, on Broadway at 60th Street, New York City.

Over the past decade, vocalist Sachal Vasandani has performed at Jazz at Lincoln Center alongside artists like Jon Hendricks (for his 90th birthday), the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, Michael Feinstein, and more. He returns to the intimate Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola to celebrate Nat “King” Cole. Sachal has brought this acclaimed project to major stages in both small group and orchestral contexts, and it will be a treat to experience it in Jazz at Lincoln Center’s most intimate performance space. With classics like “Unforgettable,” “Mona Lisa,” and “Straighten Up and Fly Right,” plus a few original tunes, Vasandani and his friends will share their deep passion for the legendary Nat “King” Cole.

When Quincy Jones first saw Dominick Farinacci perform, he famously said: “This kid is 360 degrees!” Every aspect of his talent has received its due praise—from his succinct, melodic phrasing, to his expressive tone and strong chops. Farinacci’s most recent Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola appearance was an album release show for Short Stories, an elegant collection of music featuring pieces by Dianne Reeves, Tom Waits, Horace Silver, the Gypsy Kings, Cream, and original compositions. He now returns to Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola with a new group of top-notch instrumentalists and rising star vocalist Shenel Johns.

Ben Wolfe is a Grammy Award-winning bassist and composer. Not only has he held long-term positions with artists including Wynton Marsalis, Harry Connick Jr., and Diana Krall, Wolfe is also a prominent bandleader and recording artist. Of his MAXJAZZ debut, No Strangers Here, The New York Times wrote: “In this music Mingus and Miles Davis meet Bartok and Bernard Herrmann.” For this appearance, he leads the Ben Wolfe Quintet featuring jazz giant Randy Brecker. A regular headliner himself, Brecker has won six Grammy Awards as a bandleader and has worked with everyone from Charles Mingus and Horace Silver to Frank Zappa and Parliament-Funkadelic. This will be Wolfe and Brecker’s first collaboration at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola.

John Ellis is one of New York’s premiere saxophonists, having performed and recorded on over 100 albums alongside artists including John Patitucci, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Robert Glasper, and Sting. NPR has noted that “The tenor saxophonist John Ellis is a commanding instrumentalist with a most gorgeous, caramelized tone. And though he now lives in New York, his band gives away the fact that he learned an awful lot in New Orleans.” Ellis is also a major force as a composer; he leads multiple bands and has received three composition grants through The Jazz Gallery, among other honors. Ellis returns to Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola to lead his virtuosic Sextet comprising Joel Ross, Alan Ferber, Gary Versace, Reuben Rogers, and Joe Dyson.

Already one of today’s most high-profile sidemen, this Grammy Award winner and DownBeat Rising Star has recently stepped into a leadership role and assembled some top-shelf groups. We’re lucky to have him back for another album release event at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola. Owens’ new group features the well-established bassist Reuben Rogers and two of New York’s most in-demand rising stars: vibraphonist Joel Ross and vocalist Vuyo Sotashe.

Drummer Ulysses Owens, Jr. leads the New Century Big Band’s debut at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola. This new, unrecorded group is an expansion of the acclaimed New Century Jazz Quintet, a small group featuring five of the best rising star musicians from New York City and Japan: Ulysses Owens, Jr., Tim Green, Benny Benack III, Takeshi Ohbayashi, and Yasushi Nakamura. Over the past few years, the Quintet has performed to enthusiastic New York audiences at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola and throughout Japan, leaving no question that they are all key players in the future of jazz. This big band adds 11 worthy instrumentalists to the mix, plus vocalists Shenel Johns and Charles Turner, both of whom have been featured headliners at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola.

Blessed with a crystal clear voice, fierce originality, and a commanding stage presence, René Marie is a musical force of nature and a provocative risk-taker. For her return to Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, Marie will bring her regular, Grammy Award-nominated rhythm section of pianist John Chin, bassist Elias Bailey, and drummer Quentin Baxter, Jr.

Four-time JUNO Award winner, two-time Grammy nominee, and Officer of the Order of Canada, saxophonist and flutist Jane Bunnett has long been inspired by the music of Cuba. Bunnett blends intricate folkloric Afro-Cuban rhythms with contemporary jazz, and she has been credited with introducing North American audiences to Cuban greats like Pedrito Martinez, David Virelles, Dafnis Prieto, and Yosvanny Terry. Her latest group, Maqueque, is a young, all-female sextet that she assembled in Cuba, and they have already received broad acclaim. Their infectious blend of Cuban soul and modern jazz will fill Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola during this debut performance.

Keeping an unprecedented streak alive for the tenth consecutive year, Trio da Paz comes to Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola for a two-week summer residency. Formed in 1990 by three of Brazil’s most in-demand master musicians, Romero Lubambo, Nilson Matta, and Duduka da Fonseca, Trio da Paz updates the infectious spirit of jazz-oriented Brazilian music. With their harmonically adventurous interactions, daring improvisations, and dazzling rhythms, this group redefines Brazilian jazz.

DANOWSKY/WOLSK JAZZ ORCHESTRA*

The Danowsky/Wolsk Jazz Orchestra is a brand new big band led by two hardworking students from Northwestern University. Following a successful fundraising campaign bolstered by a significant grant from the University, this ambitious pair recently recorded their debut album. It is not often that musicians this young have the talent, drive, and focus required to assemble, record, and travel with a jazz orchestra, and the passion they have brought to this project is remarkable. The album is comprised entirely of new, unrecorded big band works composed by Danowsky, Wolsk, and their peers, showcasing some promising young voices jazz from Chicago and New York.

Bill O’Connell is an award-winning pianist, keyboardist, composer, and arranger celebrated in both Latin and contemporary jazz. Since becoming Mongo Santamaría’s keyboardist in 1977, O’Connell has performed with, led, and arranged for such heavyweights as Astrud Gilberto, Sonny Rollins, Papo Vázquez, Paquito D’Rivera, and Chet Baker, and he recorded over a dozen albums with the Grammy Award-winning flutist Dave Valentín. O’Connell is one of the modern greats as both a player and writer, and The Latin Jazz All-Stars, his primary band, truly lives up to its name.

Cuban-born, New York-based pianist and composer Axel Tosca makes his debut at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola. Described as “contemporary jazz with a global reach,” Tosca blends influences including folk, timba, Afro-Caribbean, and funk. He is a charismatic bandleader whose groups have great chemistry, and will be leading his band through a set focused on his original music. The set will be a raw, acoustic approach to his compositions from his self-titled album.

ANN HAMPTON CALLAWAY

Ann Hampton Callaway is one of the preeminent voices of the American Songbook, a tireless performer who has reached acclaim on Broadway, in theaters, on television, and in a variety of concert halls and jazz clubs around the country. Her last performance at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola was an album release party celebrating Callaway’s tribute to the virtuosic Sarah Vaughan, also known as “Sassy” and “The Divine One.” A full concert dedicated to this legendary vocalist was a bold and formidable task, but Callaway regularly proves her ability to cover diverse and challenging material with taste, humor, and technical strength.
