Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola announces the July 2017 lineup featuring a diverse array of artists and programs. In addition to innovative and rich programming throughout the month, the Club, recently called the “one of the more coveted rooms on the New York jazz circuit” (New York Times) will host the Ertegun Jazz Hall of Fame Festival from July 18-20. The Ertegun Jazz Hall of Fame 2017 class of inductees Tito Puente, Don Redman, and McCoy Tyner will be celebrated with specially curated sets. Willie Jones III is one of the world’s top jazz drummers, known both for his distinct style of rhythmic expression and for honoring monumental influences such as Philly Joe Jones, Art Blakey, and Billy Higgins. Jones has a storied background as a sideman with artists such as Herbie Hancock, Roy Hargrove, Hank Jones, and Kurt Elling, but for the last 17 years he has also been producing records – both his own and those of notable contemporaries – on his WJ3 label, with a strong emphasis on swing and traditional jazz rhythms.

Guitarist Mike Moreno is an acclaimed composer, bandleader, and guitarist who has worked with a long and diverse list of contemporaries, including Joshua Redman, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, Robert Glasper, Q-Tip, Bilal, and Lizz Wright. In this performance, his Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola debut as a leader, he will perform a selection of his original compositions, featuring memorably melodic post-bop tunes performed on electric guitar—and perhaps a solo or duo piece showing off his formidable acoustic technique.

Vocalist Joan Belgrave first started singing in church, went on to study classical voice, and is now known in jazz, blues, gospel, and R&B circles. A versatile singer and natural entertainer, Belgrave is a proven crowd-pleaser with original compositions and new takes on classics—including a recent Dinah Washington tribute. Her sextet features the 80-year-old piano legend Kirk Lightsey, who has worked with such greats as Dexter Gordon, Pharoah Sanders, and Kenny Burrell, and has accompanied vocalists like Betty Carter and Gregory Porter.

Legendary trumpeter Jon Faddis, protégé of the great Dizzy Gillespie, returns to Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola to great demand. Known for an extraordinary and virtually unparalleled range, Faddis has complete mastery over the trumpet. He evokes the voices of Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, Roy Eldridge, and, of course, Gillespie, all while remaining true to his own. Faddis’ illustrious career has seen him perform with top jazz musicians, including Lionel Hampton, Charles Mingus, and the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra.

This will be her ninth annual tribute to Nina Simone and Miriam Makeba, her second appearance at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola,and her first time bringing this acclaimed program to the Club.

Saxophonist Marcus Strickland is no stranger to Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola; in April 2017 he spent a week performing as a member of Christian McBride’s new quartet. In recent years, he has headlined with his own quartet and performed sold-out tributes to John Coltrane, Wayne Shorter, and Thelonious Monk. His long-running Twi-Life project is something a little different, and this will be its debut at Jazz at Lincoln Center. Drawing upon such diverse influences as Charles Mingus’ freewheeling jazz, Bartok’s Hungarian folk, Fela Kuti’s Afrobeat, and J Dilla’s jazz-influenced hip-hop beats, Strickland has synthesized something widely accessible, emotionally resonant, and unmistakably modern.

Grammy Award winner Catherine Russell has been one of the most widely recognized jazz vocalists since the release of her debut CD in 2006. Her latest album, Harlem on My Mind, was nominated for the 2017 Best Jazz Vocal Album Grammy Award. Russell’s experience extends beyond releasing seven acclaimed albums as a solo artist; she has also worked with Steely Dan, David Bowie, Cyndi Lauper, Paul Simon, Jackson Browne, and Levon Helm. She joined the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis on its Big Band Holidays tour in 2016, and will be joining them again this December. Seeing Russell perform live is a truly uplifting experience and an easy recommendation for any fan of jazz vocals.

He returns to the intimate Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola to celebrate Nat “King” Cole. He has brought this acclaimed project to major stages in both small group and orchestral contexts, and it will be a treat to experience it in Jazz at Lincoln Center’s most intimate performance space. With classics like “Unforgettable,” “Mona Lisa,” and “Straighten Up and Fly Right,” plus a few original tunes, Vasandani and his friends will share their deep passion for the legendary Nat “King” Cole.
