24-year-old Gabe Schnider is one of New York’s most talented and promising young guitarists. This Juilliard student has already performed and/or recorded with Wynton Marsalis, James Moody, Joshua Bell, Dianne Reeves, Jon Batiste, Esperanza Spalding, choreographers Bill T. Jones and Damian Woetzel and numerous others. He has played on many of the world’s great stages—including at the 2016 Marciac Jazz Festival as a member of Wynton Marsalis’ “Young Stars of Jazz” band—and has also become a regular at Jazz at Lincoln Center. As part of the Thelonious Monk Festival, Gabe Schnider will celebrate Monk’s work through a wide array of influences that highlight its reach in and beyond the world of jazz.

Jazz at Lincoln Center is extremely proud to watch Russell Hall’s career take off at such a remarkable speed. This recent Juilliard graduate first graced Jazz at Lincoln Center in 2010, 2011, and 2012 during our Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition & Festival – he was awarded “Most Outstanding Bassist” every year. Hall has since played at the top jazz venues in New York and around the world, alongside a “who’s who” list of jazz greats, including filling in as bassist for the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis. As part of The Monk Festival, Hall will be leading a band of similar pedigree, including vibraphonist Joel Ross and pianist Mathis Picard. They will explore Thelonious Monk’s timeless repertoire, bridging the great history and future of jazz.

Jazz pianist Micah Thomas takes the music of Thelonious Monk into the midnight hour at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola on June 1, as part of the centennial celebration for the jazz legend. Born and raised in Columbus, Ohio, Thomas began playing classical piano at the age of two, joined the Columbus Youth Jazz Orchestra for five years, and was a member of the 2013 Vail Jazz Workshop and the 2014 Brubeck Jazz Colony. He has been a regular faculty member at his annual Creative Strings Workshop since 2015 and frequently appears with the Columbus Jazz orchestra as a guest artist. Since moving to New York City in 2015, Thomas graduated with a Bachelor of Music, Jazz Studies from The Julliard School, and performs at venues including Jazz at Lincoln Center, The Jazz Gallery, Cornelia Street Café, Smalls Jazz Club, and Jazz at Kitano, both as a leader of his own groups and as a sideman for artists including Lage Lund, Stacy Dilliard, Immanuel Wilkins, and Joe Saylor. He will also appear as a guest with Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis in September 2017.

The Jazz at Lincoln Center Youth Orchestra (JLCYO) consists of 20 exceedingly talented and dedicated high school students in the tri-state area (NY, NJ, and CT). Members have the opportunity to enhance their musical education with the finest professional training and performance opportunities. The JLCYO rehearses weekly in Frederick P. Rose Hall, the state-of-the-art home of Jazz at Lincoln Center. During these rehearsals, students learn big band repertoire and performance techniques from JLCYO Director Vincent Gardner, as well as members of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Managing & Artistic Director, Wynton Marsalis. Baritone saxophonist Paul Nedzela is the youngest member of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis. For his 2016 performance at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, he brought an impressive group of jazz heavy-hitters. It was a swinging and virtuosic evening of original music, classic standards, and a few lesser-known jazz selections. This year he brings an A-list rhythm section including JLCO pianist Dan Nimmer, bassist Dezron Douglas, and drummer Rodney Green to explore the “B Sides”—incredible tunes from iconic jazz albums throughout history.

CHICO FREEMAN PLUS+TET

With more than 30 albums as a leader, GRAMMY® Award-nominated saxophonist Chico Freeman is one of the most prominent musicians to come from Chicago. After spending the last decade performing in Europe, he returned to the United States in 2016 and went right back to touring the country’s top jazz venues – his New York homecoming show was a soulful album release party at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, featuring his acclaimed Plus+tet group. Tonight’s performance features an exciting new Plus+tet lineup, which includes several regular Jazz at Lincoln Center headliners including pianist Anthony Wonsey, bassist Kenny Davis, vibraphonist Warren Wolf, and drummer Nasheet Waits. They will offer their take on Freeman’s music, a swinging repertoire that is rooted in jazz tradition but distinctly representative of his personal and musical lineage.

DION PARSON AND 21ST CENTURY BAND

GRAMMY® Award-winning drummer and composer Dion Parson has put together a powerhouse ensemble comprised of some of the world’s finest musicians, with drummer Dion Parson, saxophonist Ron Blake, trumpeter Rashawn Ross, bassist Reuben Rogers, pianist Carlton Holmes, steel pan player Victor Provost, and percussion and sabar drum player Aioune Faye. Together with saxophonist Ron Blake (of the legendary Saturday Night Live Band), Parson formed 21st Century Band in 1998 to showcase the music of the U.S. Virgin Islands. It has since developed an innovative sound that mixes Virgin Islands traditions, such as Quelbe, and Caribbean infusions, like reggae, calypso, soca, mento, ska, zouk, steel pan, chutney, and funk, with New Orleans and African overtones. This popular group sells out Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola every year, and they return for a three-night run during Caribbean Heritage Month.

SAMORA PINDERHUGHES TRANSFORMATIONS SUITE

Samora Pinderhughes’ Transformation Suite (2016) is an undeniably timely and powerful work. This eclectic suite combines music, theatre, and poetry to examine the radical history of resistance within communities of the African Diaspora, connecting contemporary issues like the prison industrial complex and the Black Lives Matter movement with the long history of revolutionary movements of color. The Transformations Suite has been performed throughout Brazil and the United States, including at the American Museum of Natural History, Harlem Arts Festival, Joe’s Pub, top New York universities, and now, Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola. This thought-provoking performance will leave fans of genre-crossing, contemporary jazz with a lot to enjoy.

Joe Temperley Tribute CD Release

Saxophonists and twin brothers Peter and Will Anderson recently raised over $20,000 for a Joe Temperley Scholarship for saxophone students at The Juilliard School, and they now celebrate the release of their new album, Blues for Joe. The album is dedicated to the late Joe Temperley – the Andersons’ longtime mentor and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra’s beloved baritone saxophonist. The Andersons will be joined by guitarist Peter Bernstein, drummer Kenny Washington, and B-3 organist Pat Bianchi to perform some of Temperley’s favorite songs, including Billy Strayhorn’s “Lush Life,” Ray Noble’s “The Very Thought of You,” and Duke Ellington’s “In a Mellow Tone.” They will also debut several of their original compositions, all to celebrate the life and artistry of Joe Temperley. This performance will showcase his impact on the new generation of jazz musicians.

THE ALLAN HARRIS BAND
Nobody’s Gonna Love You Better (Black Bar Jukebox Redux)

The award-winning Allan Harris is a Brooklyn-born, Harlem-raised vocalist, guitarist, and composer with a powerful baritone voice and a gift for blending jazz, blues, R&B, rock, and a bit of Latin music. His last appearance at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola was an album release party for his hit record Black Bar Jukebox, and he now returns to celebrate his follow-up record, Nobody’s Gonna Love You Better (Black Bar Jukebox Redux). His band features pianist/organist Pascal Le Boeuf, drummer/cajón player Shirazette Tinnin, and bassist Nimrod Speaks. Says Harris, “What I’m doing is taking songs from my childhood, my jukebox days, as a kid in Harlem and in Brooklyn, and trying to morph it into the next sound.” With new originals and favorites by such artists as Steely Dan, Jimi Hendrix, Stan Getz/João Gilberto, Eddie Jefferson, and Ray Charles, the band is as fun and diverse as the repertoire. These sets will absolutely another well-deserved album release celebration for Harris.

BARRY HARRIS TRIO

At 87 years old, pianist Barry Harris is a living institution in jazz. An exemplary musician since the 1950s, he has worked with the likes of Miles Davis, Max Roach, Coleman Hawkins, Dizzy Gillespie, Dexter Gordon, and Yusef Lateef. In addition to recording over 30 albums of his own across six decades, he has played on classic recordings like The Magnificent Thad Jones and Lee Morgan’s The Sidewinder. As vital as ever, Harris is an example of what makes New York City the jazz capital of the world; his live performances are widely celebrated, yet down-to-earth affairs, and his weekly jazz workshops have made him an invaluable educational resource for musicians.

Saxophonist Jon Gordon has long been recognized as a formidable instrumentalist, having won the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition in 1996 and working with artists including Roy Eldridge, Maria Schneider, Clark Terry, Ben Monder, Harry Connick, Jr., and Benny Carter, to name a few. He is also a composer and bandleader whose last couple of albums earned heaps of praise from fans and critics and made their way onto a number of “Top Ten Albums of the Year” lists; DownBeat magazine called Within Worlds (2008) one of the top ten albums of the decade, describing it as a “multifaceted statement that invites repeated investigations.”

THEO HILL TRIO

As a pianist, keyboardist, and composer, Theo Hill has emerged as a fresh voice on the New York scene. Known for his versatility, originality, and sensitivity, Hill’s extensive study of diverse styles has led to a prolific career with artists including Charles Tolliver, Frank Lacy, Lenny White, Wallace Roney, Joe Sanders, E.J. Strickland, and Marcus Gilmore. With his dexterous touch and total commitment to the moment, Hill makes a particularly strong impression when the band is swinging hard and fast, but he also keeps things interesting by throwing in a variety of tempos and stylistic influences. For this appearance at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, Hill will be celebrating the release of his latest album, Promethean, alongside the same excellent rhythm section featured on the recording: Yasushi Nakamura and Mark Whitfield, Jr.

JAZZTOPAD FESTIVAL: WÓJCIŃSKI / SZMAŃDA QUARTET AND STRYJO

The annual Jazztopad Festival at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola is a must-see showcase for anyone interested in the world of jazz and improvised music. This year, each set will be split between two groups: the Wójciński / Szmańda Quartet and STRYJO. The Wójciński / Szmańda Quartet features the three Wójciński brothers – each of them a current mainstay in the Polish jazz scene – on trumpet, piano, and bass, plus Krzysztof Szmańda on drums. Attentive listeners will be rewarded with extended, explorative improvised sections that often reach moments of almost ecstatic musical unity. STRYJO is a trio that performs 100% improvised songs (including themes, rhythms, structure, etc.) that sound neither “free” nor overly simplistic. Thanks to shared musical instincts and years of experience with one another, this trio creates unusually concise and cohesive pieces (averaging about five minutes on their recent double album A Vista Social Club) that do not sound completely written, but do sound as though they agreed on some of the components beforehand. Groove seems to be a priority here, and STRYJO’s embrace of easily identifiable rhythmic foundations makes their music immediately accessible and allows them to dazzle with the details.

KURT ELLING QUINTET

Kurt Elling is one of the world’s top jazz vocalists, boasting a four-octave baritone voice and a gift for vocalese. This GRAMMY® Award winner’s last appearance at Jazz at Lincoln Center was in collaboration with the Branford Marsalis Quartet in Rose Theater. In September, Elling will kick of the 30th Anniversary Season in The Appel Room alongside pianist Fred Hersch. Elling is a broadly appealing artist sure to please almost any listener, but he is also earned a serious reputation amongst the most discerning fans. This weekend is the opportunity to experience Elling’s world-renowned talent in an intimate setting.

Black Art Jazz Collective (BAJC) is a collaborative ensemble comprised of jazz’s finest rising and established stars, including Wayne Escoffery, Jeremy Pelt, and Johnathan Blake. Each member is a leader in his own right and has also been an integral part of groups led by pioneers including Tom Harrell, Bobby Hutcherson, Wayne Shorter, Ron Carter, Louis Hayes, Freddie Hubbard, and many more. In 2016, the BAJC released an outstanding debut album, establishing themselves as a significant new group that has earned some high expectations. The Collective performs fiery, expert post-bop originals dedicated to African American icons. Black Arts Jazz Collective made their Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola debut in 2013.

WILLIE JONES III QUINTET

Willie Jones III is one of the world’s top jazz drummers, known both for his distinct style of rhythmic expression and for honoring monumental influences such as Philly Joe Jones, Art Blakey, and Billy Higgins. Jones has a storied background as a sideman with artists such as Herbie Hancock, Roy Hargrove, Hank Jones, and Kurt Elling, but for the last 17 years he has also been producing records – both his own and those of notable contemporaries – on his WJ3 label, with a strong emphasis on swing and traditional jazz rhythms. As always, Jones has an elite band enlisted for the gig, including the great West Coast-based pianist Eric Reed, trumpeter Terell Stafford, tenor saxophonist Ralph Moore, and bassist George Delancey. Fans of no-frills, small group jazz at its finest should go out of their way to catch one of these sets.
