The all-female DIVA Jazz Orchestra exudes the excitement and force found in the historic big band tradition. With Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola as its “New York City home,” DIVA performs all over the world, playing contemporary, mainstream big band jazz composed and arranged to fit the individual personalities and styles of the musicians. This performance celebrates the group’s 24th anniversary and pays tribute to the many stars they have worked with, including Joe Williams, Nancy Wilson, Diane Schuur, Maurice Hines, and more.

DANILO BRITO: CHORO MEETS JAZZ

Choro is an enduringly popular genre of Brazilian music known for instrumental virtuosity, improvisation, syncopation, and counterpoint. This performance features the young mandolin virtuoso Danilo Brito, who is already considered to be the premier choro mandolinist. Brito possesses the ultimate technical skill on his instrument, but it is his thoughtful expressiveness that resonates with listeners around the world. This performance will be Brito’s Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola debut.

CHUCK REDD QUARTET

Vibraphonist Chuck Redd is an accomplished bandleader who has also toured and recorded with such artists as Mel Tormé, Bucky Pizzarelli, John Pizzarelli, Dizzy Gillespie, Ray Brown, Dick Hyman, and Monty Alexander. Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola audiences recently experienced his exquisite playing when he performed alongside Bucky Pizzarelli and Ken Peplowski. Now he’s coming back to the club to lead his own group. There are two things you can always count on when Redd’s performing: a top-notch band and swinging takes on timeless standards in the jazz, blues, and American popular song idioms.

CHRISTIAN MCBRIDE BIG BAND

GRAMMY® Award-winning bassist Christian McBride first composed for big band in 1995 as commissioned by Jazz at Lincoln Center. The master musician has since appeared on over 300 recordings and is easily one of the most accomplished bassists alive. Now a leader of his own GRAMMY® Award-winning Big Band featuring a staggering and diverse lineup of top musicians, McBride simultaneously shows off his compositional talent and unmatched ability to drive a band from behind the bass. This new group combines the classic big band sounds of the Swing Era with more than half a century of post-bop influences.

The Manhattan School of Music has long been a fixture of the New York music scene and prides itself as one of the first conservatories in the United States to acknowledge the prime importance of jazz as an art form. The Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra, led by multi-GRAMMY® Award nominee Bobby Sanabria, boasts two separate Latin GRAMMY® Award nominations, an exceptional accomplishment for a student ensemble who will present a new Latin jazz treatment of music from Leonard Bernstein’s timeless Broadway masterpiece, West Side Story. This unique tribute coincides with the 60th anniversary of Bernstein’s classic musical.

Bassist Christian McBride is a master musician who has appeared on over 300 records. He presents a band called New Jawn, which, translated from Philadelphian, could be described as McBride’s “new joint.” The quartet includes three musicians regularly featured at Jazz at Lincoln Center and all over the city both as bandleaders and as sidemen with some of jazz’s biggest names. The ensemble’s unusual two-horns, no-piano lineup gives it a unique flavor.

MONDAY NIGHTS WITH WBGO: THE PURCHASE JAZZ ORCHESTRA WITH SPECIAL GUEST INGRID JENSEN

The 17-piece big band SUNY Purchase Jazz Orchestra (PJO), under the direction of Todd Coolman, is comprised of exceedingly talented students from the Conservatory of Music’s jazz studies program. Performing jazz from every era, from staples like Ellington and Basie to leading contemporary composers like McNeely, Clayton, Abene, and Schneider, the PJO always swings. The PJO and its many special guests have a long history with Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, and this performance features award-winning trumpeter Ingrid Jensen as a special guest.

The series features talented new artists as well as groups from some of the area’s great college jazz programs. Each performance is hosted by WBGO announcer Rhonda Hamilton.
JALEEL SHAW QUARTET

Saxophonist Jaleel Shaw is a longtime member of the Roy Haynes Quartet and Tom Harrell’s Colors of a Dream, and he has worked extensively with artists like Christian McBride, Jason Moran, the Mingus Big Band, Pat Metheny, Stefon Harris, Chick Corea, and Jimmy Cobb. His last appearance at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola was a 2016 trio gig with drummer Nate Smith and 2017 NEA Jazz Master bassist Dave Holland. For this performance, Shaw brings a strong version of his longstanding quartet to Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, featuring pianist Lawrence Fields, bassist Linda Oh, and drummer Joe Dyson. Shaw’s recent albums have been praised for their thoughtful original tunes and band chemistry, both of which will be on full display.

Cuban-American pianist, composer, and GRAMMY® Award nominee Robert Rodriguez returns to Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola with an all-star string section, a jazz rhythm section, and the distinctive and ever-popular vocalist Claudia Acuña. This romantic program will feature original jazz arrangements and orchestrations of Latin love songs known as “boleros,” including pieces written by the great composers of Cuba, Mexico, and Latin America. Under Rodriguez’s expert leadership, these classics will come alive with a fresh new jazz perspective.

CELEBRATING SLIDE HAMPTON’S 85TH BIRTHDAY

NEA Jazz Master Slide Hampton is one of the most distinguished figures in jazz history. This living legend was performing at Carnegie Hall with Lionel Hampton by the time he was 20 years old, and he has since enjoyed an over 60-year career as a revered trombonist and composer. Hampton will be in attendance each night as Frank Basile leads the powerhouse Slide Hampton Octet. These extraordinary musicians will perform Slide’s greatest works in honor of his 85th birthday, and spread the joy of his countless contributions to the music and exemplifying their everlasting relevance.

Witness the artistry of New Zealander pianist Alan Broadbent. Throughout his career, he has played with artists including Charlie Haden, Chet Baker, Herbie Hancock, and Sonny Rollins. He is also a GRAMMY® Award-winning arranger, orchestrator, and conductor who has written and/or conducted for Natalie Cole, Shirley Horn, the London Symphony, and Diana Krall. His latest record, 2013’s solo piano session Heart to Heart, received a rare five-star rating from DownBeat magazine. This one-night-only event is a birthday celebration not to be missed.

Their return to Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola will be a display of up-and-coming talent under the leadership of extraordinarily experienced players. Helping them celebrate Frank Sinatra are vocalist Sachal Vasandani, saxophonist Danny Janklow, and trumpeter Terell Stafford.

Baritone saxophonist Lauren Sevian has been holding down the low end in some of the top big bands around, including the Mingus Big Band, Count Basie Orchestra, DIVA Jazz Orchestra, and Christian McBride Big Band. Sevian is also a bandleader with several acclaimed albums that showcase her contemporary twist on straight-ahead jazz. Her hard-hitting LSQ quartet features three award-winning musicians who have packed Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola numerous times – pianist Robert Rodriguez, bassist Boris Kozlov, and drummer E.J. Strickland.

Mack Avenue Records Debut CD Release Celebration for REACH

Christian Sands is only 27 years old, but he has been playing piano for the past 25 years and has five GRAMMY® Award nominations under his belt, including Best Latin Jazz Piano Solo. Wynton Marsalis named Sands a “jazz star of the future,” and he spent years as the pianist in Christian McBride’s trio. His stylistic range includes stride piano, swing, bebop, progressive jazz, fusion, Brazilian, and Afro-Cuban. In 2016, he was signed to the prestigious Mack Avenue Records label, and this performance celebrates the release of his debut album. Be the first to hear music from Sands’ anticipated new release, Reach, featuring jazz stalwarts Yasushi Nakamura, Gilad Hekselman, and Marcus Baylor.

In the past few years, Ulysses Owens, Jr. has performed at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola with artists including Christian McBride, child prodigy Joey Alexander, Steve Wilson, Mulgrew Miller, Steve Nelson, the Swing Collective, and the New Century Jazz Quartet. Already one of the most high-profile sidemen, this GRAMMY® Award winner and DownBeat Rising Star has recently stepped into a leadership role and assembled some top-shelf groups. The concerts will feature a monster lineup similar to the one Owens led in 2016’s Celebrating Ellington and Beyond program. This year, they will be honoring the many sides of the incomparable Ella Fitzgerald as part of Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Ella Fitzgerald Festival.
