Performance highlights in March include appearances by DIVA Jazz Orchestra; saxophonist Claire Daly; vocalist Tynan Davis; the Ted Nash Quintet featuring Warren Wolf, Gary Versace, Rufus Reid, and Matt Wilson; pianist Myra Melford; the appropriately named MVP Jazz Quartet including Donald Brown, Ray Drummond, Marvin Smith, and Bobby Watson; Person2Person featuring Houston Person and Eric Person; and pianist and composer Michele Rosewoman.

The aptly-named MVP Jazz Quartet features Donald Brown, Ray Drummond, Marvin “Smitty” Smith, and Bobby Watson. These renowned musicians have a lot of shared history, including having worked with legendary bandleader, mentor, and drummer Art Blakey (with the exception of Smith, himself a drummer). They have reunited as the powerhouse MVP Jazz Quartet to pay tribute to two of their favorite peers and Art Blakey cohorts: the late, great pianists and composers Mulgrew Miller and James Williams. The Quartet’s far-reaching repertoire includes original tunes by the band members, select pieces that Williams and Miller both played at different times in their respective careers, and some of Williams and Miller’s celebrated original compositions.

Loston Harris is a talented vocalist and pianist. In addition to original tunes, much of his group’s repertoire comes from the Great American Songbook, but the musicians treat this material with the nuanced sensibility of a swinging jazz trio. In addition to his rich vocals, he is also an aggressive, exciting soloist on the piano, and leaves ample room for instrumental improvisation. Even without the propulsion of a drummer, this trio burns with an unassailable drive. Loston has previously performed in The Appel Room multiple times, and this performance will be the opportunity to connect with him in Jazz at Lincoln Center’s most intimate venue.

Tessa Souter is a London-born, Harlem-based Anglo-Trinidadian vocalist and composer named “Rising Star” for two consecutive years in the DownBeat Critics’ Poll. She performs transformative arrangements of a delightfully eclectic repertoire, a list of music so far-reaching that, on paper, one might mistakenly assume is part of a novelty act. That is quite far from the truth. Whether Souter is interpreting songs by The Beatles, Kenny Barron, Chopin, Benny Carter, Cream, Debussy, or original numbers with cross-continental influences, she has a distinctive voice and a mature, emotionally resonant dedication to melody. This will be her first performance at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola since 2013.

Two generations of saxophone titans come together in Person2Person. Tenor saxophonist Houston Person is the “soul jazz” standard-bearer. At Jazz at Lincoln Center, he recently performed in sold-out shows in Rose Theater and took on saxophone duties for Ben Webster’s Ertegun Jazz Hall of Fame inauguration. Alto and soprano saxophonist Eric Person is well-known for working in the bands of legends like Dave Holland, McCoy Tyner, Chico Hamilton, David Murray, and John Hicks. He is also a prominent bandleader who has formed some excellent groups that showcase not only his playing, but his skills as a composer and arranger.

Saxophonist and composer Ted Nash is a vital part of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and a celebrated bandleader in his own right. Whether playing with Wynton Marsalis, his own Grammy Award-winning big band, or as a sideman in various small groups, Nash expertly pushes artistic boundaries while staying true to the fundamentals of jazz. His ensemble features Warren Wolf, a young protégé of Bobby Hutcherson widely regarded as a leading force on the vibraphone; Gary Versace, a prolific and versatile pianist; the legendary Rufus Reid on bass; and Matt Wilson, an endlessly creative and joyous drummer who recently sold out eight consecutive sets at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola. Individually and collectively, this group is intensely creative, highly experienced, and easy to recommend for a wide variety of music fans.

The New York Youth Symphony’s Jazz Band is considered one of the best ensembles of its kind. The ages within this group range from early teens to early 20s, making the quality of their sound even more astonishing. The band’s new director, Andy Clausen, will also present the world premiere of “The Golden Years.”

DIEGO SCHISSI QUINTETO

Pianist and composer Diego Schissi leads an outstanding ensemble at the forefront of Argentina’s Nuevo Tango movement. His Quinteto, whose musicians comes primarily from a jazz background, aims to “keep the energy rather than the gesture” of traditional tango. So while the core elements and instrumentation of tango keep things grounded, Schissi greatly expands the music’s boundaries with improvisation and 20th century classical embellishments. The Quinteto’s debut album, Tongo, received significant international attention and praise for its uniquely interwoven mix of what were once disparate concepts. This appearance will be Schissi’s debut at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola.

AARON GOLDBERG TRIO FEATURING LEON PARKER

Pianist Aaron Goldberg is a mainstay of the New York jazz scene who has worked with such diverse and forward-thinking musicians as Joshua Redman, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Wynton Marsalis, Omer Avital, and Guillermo Klein. He has also been a prominent bandleader and composer, particularly as a trio leader. This performance is an exciting collaboration between Goldberg, first-call bassist Yasushi Nakamura, and legendary drummer and percussionist Leon Parker. Made possible by the French-American Jazz Exchange, this partnership aims to “expand the sonic, communicative, and expressive possibilities of the piano trio setting, emphasizing a primary role for ‘body percussion’ and ‘body rhythm’ techniques, both in place of and in addition to the traditional drum set.”

MICHELE ROSEWOMAN: NEW YOR-UBA

In 1983, Rosewoman received a National Endowment for the Arts grant to form the pioneering 14-piece ensemble New Yor-Uba: A Musical Celebration of Cuba in America. Time and time again, this original group has been praised as a rare, seamless combination of jazz, Cuban folk music, and centuries-old African musical traditions. The ensemble features masters from multiple musical worlds, particularly jazz and Latin music, and the unique qualities of Rosewoman’s vision are immediately apparent on first listen. Her goal: “To conceive a thoroughly uncompromised synthesis of spiritually-based Cuban Folkloric music and contemporary jazz concept.”

MICHAEL BISIO: ACCORTET

Veteran bassist Michael Bisio is an extremely versatile musician who plays an essential role in every project in which he takes part. His new “Accortet” group, featuring cornetist Kirk Knuffke, pianist and accordionist Art Bailey, and percussionist Michael Wimberly, is a fresh new take on the jazz quartet. Bisio’s thoughtful writing and bold bass statements shine as bright as ever, and the compositional and improvisational use of accordion give the group a distinct feel. Jazz accordion is a rare beast. The instrument’s unique sound and capabilities are crucial components of this music, but it is expertly integrated to keep the listener’s focus on the full picture: Bisio’s wonderful compositions and the captivating improvisations of all four musicians.

CLAIRE DALY QUINTET

Claire Daly is a respected baritone saxophonist. She has won the Jazz Journalist Association’s and Hot House’s Baritone Saxophonist of the Year awards and worked with artists like the DIVA Jazz Orchestra, Aretha Franklin, Sahib Shihab, and Taj Mahal. She has also released several strong albums as a leader, including her debut, Swing Low, which remains in the Clinton Presidential Library as an album significant to President Clinton while he was in office. This show marks the release of her latest album, produced by Doug Moody: 2648 West Grand Blvd, named for the Detroit address of the original Motown Records studio. The album will feature jazz interpretations of classic Motown 45s. Daly’s previous album produced by Moody, Baritone Monk, was on the jazz charts for 24 weeks in 2013. It was released by the North Coast Brewing Company in promotion of their Brother Thelonious Ale. The ale is available at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola and the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz receives a donation with every sale, making it particularly tempting to help support jazz education.

Tynan Davis is a young vocalist on a phenomenal career path, having performed numerous operas around the United States, sung with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra in The Abyssinian Mass, premiered a new piece by composer Matthew Aucoin, performed with the Grammy Award-winning vocal octet Roomful of Teeth, and joined the national Phantom of the Opera tour. Her appearance with Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola will be her official album release celebration for her first album ever. The record was produced by Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra trumpeter Kenny Rampton, and Rampton will be performing along with several other members of the JLCO and a group of first-call jazz musicians, seven of whom contributed arrangements to this project.

STANLEY COWELL QUARTET

Eminent pianist Stanley Cowell started his jazz career in the 1960s, working with artists like Max Roach, Charles Tolliver, Bobby Hutcherson, and Stan Getz. Of that period of jazz – and of Cowell’s role in it – the New York Times noted an important balance that has always been a constant in Cowell’s art: “music both of reinvention and repertory… original, independent-minded work, comfortable with jazz tradition and common practice but not beholden to it.” The same can be said about every member of his A-list quartet. They perform a combination of originals and well-known tunes, but even the standards are often unique interpretations, broken down and reassembled anew to answer unasked questions like “what if Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie’s breakneck bebop burner ‘Anthropology’ was performed as a loosely timed ballad?” The answers are always worth hearing.

Clarinetist, saxophonist, and composer Victor Goines is a protégé of Ellis Marsalis and one of the most respected musicians in jazz today. A member of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and the Wynton Marsalis Septet since 1993, Goines is also a gifted composer and an acclaimed bandleader with nine recordings to his name. His stylistic expertise covers practically the entire history of jazz, and his musical roots in New Orleans add a distinct flavor to everything he touches. His recent Rose Theater and Appel Room shows have been some of Jazz at Lincoln Center’s most popular, making Goines’ return to Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola a highly anticipated event.
