Jazz pianist and singer Freddy Cole is a prolific artist of undisputed pedigree. Building his career at the same time as his brother, the iconic Nat King Cole, it was never going to be easy for Cole to establish his own musical identity. However, with 20 albums released in just the last two decades, including the GRAMMY® Award-nominated 2010 album, Freddy Cole Sings Mr. B, Cole has carved out a reputation as an individual and prolific force in the jazz world. Amongst the greatest contemporary crooners, Cole’s sensitivity and powerful delivery make him the perfect artist for Valentine’s Day weekend.

BRIANNA THOMAS: IT HAD TO BE YOU

Soulful vocalist Brianna Thomas returns to Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola for a seductive Valentine’s Day performance. Thomas is a versatile young performer oozing with personality. She is particularly adept when it comes to the blues and ballads, promising a perfect soundtrack for romance. She will perform selections from her 2014 critically-acclaimed debut album You Must Believe in Love for this special evening. Songs include “Bye Bye Blackbird,” “Lover of my Soul,” “In a Mellow Tone,” “Stardust,” and originals like “Bree’s Blues.” In the candlelit jazz club overlooking Columbus Circle, Thomas and her first-rate band will leave audiences with a Valentine’s Day evening to remember.

Saxophonist Javon Jackson is a former member of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers who has since played with major artists like Freddie Hubbard and Elvin Jones, in addition to leading his own groups. Jackson has a knack for putting together stellar rhythm sections, capable of supporting his commanding sound before taking their own turns in the spotlight. He will perform with the same A-list quartet that he brought to Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola for a birthday celebration in 2015. In addition to his artful contributions as a saxophonist, Jackson is greatly respected for leading the Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz.

Percussion wizard Gerry Gibbs has worked with a varied and seemingly endless list of top artists, including McCoy Tyner, Alice and Ravi Coltrane, Joe Henderson, Brad Mehldau, Parliament Funkdelic, Flying Lotus, James Moody, Wynton Marsalis, Mike Stern, Larry Coryell, and Dewey Redman. This will be his debut performance at Jazz at Lincoln Center. For the occasion, he is bringing an all-star group of instrumentalists, most of whom regularly headline and sell out shows at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola: vibraphonist Warren Wolf, trumpeter Tom Harrell, trombonist Robin Eubanks, bassist Buster Williams, and pianist Alex Collins. Each a celebrated composer, bandleader, and virtuosic improviser in their own right; together they will make Gibbs’ Jazz at Lincoln Center premiere a performance to remember.

Vocalist Devin Bing makes his Jazz at Lincoln Center debut for one night only. He approaches this music with a confident pop sensibility and adds a few unexpected twists like emulating trumpet solos with his voice. This is the opportunity to get up close and personal with the Global Music Awards’ 2016 Best Male Vocalist.

The multi-talented Camille Thurman is an award-winning composer, a formidable saxophonist, and a second-place winner of the prestigious Sarah Vaughan Vocal Competition. She has performed with artists ranging from Dr. Billy Taylor, George Coleman, Lew Tabackin, and George Benson, to Chaka Khan, Alicia Keys, and Missy Elliot. She recently made her Jazz at Lincoln Center debut during the Generations in Jazz Festival, leading a killer quartet as she sang, played, and showcased original compositions and some classics.

The Flail is a New York City-based jazz quintet from the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music. Since its inception in 2001, the Flail has focused on developing a group sound, with each member enjoying an equal voice in composition and improvisation. This flexible attitude is highlighted in all aspects of their music, which covers an incredible amount of stylistic ground. Their original compositions boast intricate, weaving forms, daring solos, and a wide range of ideas and grooves, resulting in a fresh sound by a experienced, globally touring group.

Rising star vocalist, pianist, and composer Sarah McKenzie returns to Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola. She last appeared in 2014 while she was attending Berklee College of Music on full scholarship, awarded by the Umbria Jazz Festival competition. She graduated in 18 months and was quickly signed by the legendary impulse! record label. Her first release on the label was 2015’s We Could Be Lovers, which won the prestigious Bell Award as Best Australian Jazz Vocal Album. McKenzie has toured with artists like Michael Bublé, Chris Botti, and John Patitucci, and she has performed her own material with The Boston Pops at Symphony Hall. Already known for her mature instrumental and vocal phrasing, this rising star demonstrates experience far beyond her years. With a repertoire featuring originals and arrangements of songs by Duke Ellington, Irving Berlin, Joni Mitchell, Johnny Mercer, the Gershwins, and more, a nice array of straight-ahead and pop-tinged vocal jazz can be expected.

Trombonist and bandleader Delfaeyo Marsalis (of the famed NEA Jazz Master family) comes to Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola from New Orleans for his first headlining performance at Jazz at Lincoln Center. His hard-swinging Uptown Jazz Orchestra (UJO) is a mainstay in New Orleans jazz clubs like Snug Harbor. The UJO is a big band that emphasizes groove, riff playing, and the polyphonic improvisation of the New Orleans jazz tradition. The vast majority of the musicians are Louisiana natives, and they range from extremely talented young students to respected jazz veterans, continuing the long jazz tradition of onstage apprenticeship.

Andrew Cyrille is one of the preeminent jazz and avant-garde drummers, having worked extensively with Cecil Taylor, and with Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Coleman Hawkins, Mary Lou Williams, and other significant artists. He is also a powerful force as a composer and bandleader. This performance will showcase his new quartet featuring groundbreaking synthesizer artist Richard Teitelbaum, prolific bassist Ben Street, and guitarist Bill Frisell, who has sold out numerous shows in The Appel Room. They will be performing music from their highly celebrated debut album The Declaration of Musical Independence, a varied collection of music that includes compositions by every member of the band. These four icons will perform together for one night only at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola.

Benny Green is a hard bop pianist carrying on the swinging jazz tradition. A former member of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, Green also learned under the tutelage of Betty Carter, Freddie Hubbard, and Ray Brown. This experience is evident in his playing and leadership. His internationally touring trio, featuring bassist David Wong and drummer Rodney Green, is a shining example of first-rate hard bop that captures the driving energy of the canon’s best practitioners. This weekend of music will be a great introduction for jazz newcomers as well as an impressive showcase sure to please longtime fans of the music.

The Juilliard School has been a destination for world-class music education since it was founded, and these young musicians will exemplify that legacy for this special performance. The Juilliard School Jazz Ensemble features some of the world’s most talented emerging jazz artists, many of whom are already professional musicians. No stranger to Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, the ensemble has also performed at noted venues such as the Blue Note and Alice Tully Hall. These young musicians are proof of jazz’s bright future.

JASON MARSALIS VIBES QUARTET

NEA Jazz Master Jason Marsalis returns to Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola with the Vibes Quartet. Well known for his work as a drummer with artists like Marcus Roberts and the Marsalis Family, Marsalis has increasingly explored the vibraphone with virtuosity and creativity in recent years. With the Vibes Quartet, featuring Austin Johnson, Will Goble, and David Potter, Marsalis truly shines on the instrument. The group’s repertoire is unpredictable and widely appealing, offering a mix of straight-ahead jazz with a bit of New Orleans swagger. This is a rare Jazz at Lincoln Center appearance by the youngest Marsalis brother.

Members of this group have extensive experience both playing with each other and with Dexter Gordon, making them ideal candidates to honor their friend, colleague, and musical inspiration on this special occasion. Featuring Gordon’s compositions and favorite tunes, this will be an unforgettable night for fans of the late Dexter Gordon.

Riley Mulherkar and Alphonso Horne are two of the most prominent and promising young trumpeters in jazz – they make regular appearances at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, thanks in part to the numerous bandleaders scrambling to hire them. For this evening, they co-lead the Mardi Gras celebration for the second year in a row, treating audiences to the infectious sounds of Creole jazz. This concert will showcase the virtuosity of a young Louis Armstrong and the innovative genius of King Oliver, weaving the sounds of New Orleans into a rich musical fabric that uplifts and warms the soul. With a number of Mardi Gras specials on the menu for the celebration, the club will be in good spirits for this special occasion.
