90-year-old NEA Jazz Master Randy Weston graces Dizzy’s to share his unique brand of global jazz. The ensemble plays a wide variety of jazz styles, fully incorporating swing, blues, and sophisticated jazz harmonies with a unique rhythmic and sonic palette provided by African percussionist Neil Clarke. A natural fit with the jazz veterans in the band, Clarke expertly uses hand drums, cymbals, and chimes to keep the groove strong yet spacious, highlighting the great detail in each composition and improvisation.

Broadway legend Maurice Hines taps through his incredible career in show business in this celebration of song and dance. Hines pays tribute to his brother, Gregory, and the performers who inspired him—from Frank Sinatra to Lena Horne—with standards like “Luck Be A Lady,” “Smile,” “It Don’t Mean A Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing),” and more. Backed by the all-female DIVA Jazz Orchestra, who proudly calls Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola its “New York City home,” this infectious show promises a memorable evening at our most intimate performance space.

Jorge Luis Pacheco Campos is a virtuoso pianist, vocalist, percussionist, composer, and arranger who “defies genre,” according to Monty Alexander. He has collaborated with such artists as Chucho Valdés, Arturo O’Farrill, and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis during its historic trip to Cuba. While grounded in Cuban jazz, his group’s modern approach includes heady rhythmic shifts, breakneck pace, and exciting compositions that highlight Pacheco’s experience writing for solo performance and small groups as well as a string symphony and documentary scores.

Bria Skonberg
Trumpeter, singer, and songwriter Bria Skonberg is a local favorite who received rave reviews for her latest release, Bria. A collection of originals and standards such as “Que Sera Sera” and “You’re Getting to be a Habit with Me,” Bria effectively showcases Skonberg’s place in the jazz/pop lineage pioneered by artists like Harry Connick, Jr., Diana Krall, and Michael Buble. Her music is imbued with a hip, hot jazz vibe that keeps the energy high and provides ample opportunity for memorable solos. Skonberg’s previous appearance at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola was a sold-out evening of love songs from the Big Easy, and this upcoming performance promises to be a similarly joyful and swinging affair.

Vocalist Kenny Washington is a supreme vocalist who knows how to spread holiday cheer through swing. He recently toured and recorded with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis for Big Band Holidays, adding sophisticated grace and playful improvisation to a wide variety of favorite tunes. He’s joined by a rhythm section that alone would be well worth checking out. Isaiah J. Thompson, Philip Norris, and Cosimo Fabrizio are all extraordinarily talented and award-winning young musicians who have also appeared on Jazz at Lincoln Center’s larger stages, and Joe Farnsworth is a true veteran who recently headlined at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola with a group featuring Harold Mabern and Bob Cranshaw. All told, it’s a great show for both dedicated jazz fans and casual listeners in search of some New York City holiday spirit.

The Juilliard School has been a destination for world-class music education since its founding, and these incredible young musicians will exemplify that legacy at Dizzy’s. The Juilliard Jazz Ensembles feature some of the world’s most talented emerging jazz artists, many of whom are already professional musicians, and they are taught by some of today’s most active, innovative, and respected jazz musicians. No stranger to Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, the Ensembles have also performed at noted venues such as the Blue Note and Alice Tully Hall. These gifted young musicians are proof of jazz’s bright future.

New York Youth Symphony
The New York Youth Symphony’s Jazz Band is considered one of the best ensembles of its kind. The members of this group range from early teens to early 20s, making the quality of their sound even more astonishing. In an effort to preserve jazz traditions and styles, the ensemble focuses on the music of the 1930s and 1940s big band orchestras in addition to contemporary pieces. While celebrating the heritage of jazz, the group also values a progressive, emerging new sound.

Ted Rosenthal Trio: Wonderland Holiday Show

Ted Rosenthal, a Long Island native, first gained international acclaim by winning the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano Competition in 1988. Since then, Rosenthal has made 15 recordings as a leader and performed with Gerry Mulligan, Art Farmer, Phil Woods, Bob Brookmeyer, and more. Tonight the Ted Rosenthal Trio returns for another “Wonderland” show, continuing what has become a popular holiday tradition at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola. The repertoire is a showcase of Rosenthal’s skills as an arranger and the trio’s impeccable musicianship, and their reinterpretations leave intact the timelessness of the best known Christmas songs. The group, featuring Duduka da Fonseca (of Trio da Paz), Helio Alves, and vocalist Maucha Adnet – each a native of Brazil – shares an expertise in this music, and each member is internationally recognized for expanding the worlds of jazz and Latin music.

Following up his appearance as a special guest for the sold-out 2016-17 season opener with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, legendary pianist Dick Hyman will treat audiences to intimate solo performances. Hyman’s career includes a nearly encyclopedic output of over 100 albums under his name, ranging from original piano and orchestral works, to interpretations of classic American music, ragtime, and variants of stride piano. The 89-year-old pianist is rumored to never miss a note, and while that in no way defines his art, the rumor’s mere existence in the context of such demanding music speaks volumes of his technical mastery. This is a chance to see America’s greatest music performed at the highest level by a living legend.

An accomplished bandleader and a saxophonist with the sweetest tone, Sherman Irby is a longtime member of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis (JLCO). This season, he’ll be spreading the Christmas spirit far and wide, serving as music director for the JLCO’s performances of Big Band Holidays in Rose Theater before bringing this exclusive series to Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola. These intimate sets will be the debut of Sherman Irby: A New Christmas Story, a family-friendly program that also promises to engage adults looking for sophisticated and uplifting holiday entertainment. Irby’s top-notch band features fellow JLCO member Vincent Gardner, Willie Jones III, Gerald Cannon, Larry Willis, and vocalist Sofija Knezevic.
