Renowned singer/songwriter, blues-rock guitarist and 2016 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductee Steve Miller and GRAMMY winning singer/songwriter blues guitarist Jimmie Vaughan return to Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Rose Theater on December 9 – 10 at 8pm to host and perform a special show about the founding father of electric blues guitar, T-Bone Walker, whose unique and extraordinary solo electric guitar performances changed the way the blues is played. For Miller, T-Bone “is the bridge from blues to jazz.”
According to Helen Oakley Dance, author of Stormy Monday: The T-Bone Walker Story, “no one recognized the potential of the electric guitar in such a swinging fashion.” As blues authority Pete Welding noted, “the blues was different before T-Bone came onto the scene and it hasn’t been the same since, and few men can lay claim to this kind of distinction. Among blues artists, he is non nonpareil. No one has contributed as much, as long or as variously to the blues as he has.”
STEVE MILLER & JIMMIE VAUGHAN: T-BONE WALKER – A BRIDGE FROM BLUES TO JAZZ will take place at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Rose Theater at Frederick P. Rose Hall, located at Broadway at 60th Street, New York, New York.
Miller, a multi-platinum recording artist, learned his first chords at age five from his godfather Les Paul, how to play lead guitar from T-Bone Walker at age nine, and then worked with some of the best bluesmen in Chicago – Howlin Wolf, Buddy Guy, and Paul Butterfield – before moving to San Francisco to start The Steve Miller Band. Throughout his iconic career, Miler has incorporated his affinity for the blues into many of his recordings such as “Fly Like An Eagle,” “The Joker,” and “Rock’n Me,” to name a few.
Miller and Vaughan will be backed by a great assemblage of jazz stars: vocalist Brianna Thomas, pianist Shelly Berg, alto saxophonist/clarinetist Patrick Bartley, tenor saxophonist Craig Handy, baritone saxophonist Lauren Sevian, trumpeter Michael Rodriguez, bassist Yasushi Nakamura, and drummer Sonny Emory.
