Lou Donaldson Quartet: Lou at 90

NEA Jazz Master Lou Donaldson celebrates his 90th at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola. Donaldson has been one of the most respected names in jazz since the 1950s, when he worked with artists like Milt Jackson and Thelonious Monk. With a huge tone and soul-influenced style that combines straight-ahead jazz, blues, bebop, and soul music, he calls his groove-laden style “soul sax.” He continues to play at his very best, entertaining audiences worldwide with spirited performances that are always soulful, thoroughly swinging, and steeped in the blues.

Chris Pattishall’s Fictions: Borges in Tango

Pianist Chris Pattishall is a mainstay at Jazz at Lincoln Center and throughout the New York City music scene, named by Wynton Marsalis as one of the top-five jazz musicians under 30 to watch. Tonight’s program, entitled Fictions, will be an entirely original program of works by Patishall, inspired by the short stories of literary master Jorge Luis Borges. Aspiring towards both the brevity and the dense, allusive scope of Borges’ work, the performance consists of “musical miniatures” that draw upon such influences as Argentine tango, Romantic Era symphonic tone poems, and Balkan folk traditions. This eclectic range of music will be performed by a virtuosic improvising octet. It’s an interesting unifying theme that suggests countless possibilities. On paper, the stylistic mix might sound like a lot to take in, but rest assured that Pattishall and his band members are some of the most reliably enjoyable young musicians in New York, consistently challenging themselves without leaving the groove behind. Papo Vazquez Mighty Pirates Troubadours
Papo Vazquez is a visionary composer, trombonist, singer, and percussionist whose eclectic output includes jazz, Afro-Caribbean, classical, and a wide spectrum of Latin music – sometimes performed individually, and sometimes in combination. This diverse, often theatrical repertoire is brought to life by the Mighty Pirates Troubadours band, which masterfully navigates Vazquez’ journey through Latin dance grooves, extended jazz improvisations, and slow, lushly orchestrated passages.

Ralph Peterson & Aggregate Prime featuring Vijay Iyer, Kenny Davis, Mark Whitfield and Gary Thomas
Powerhouse drum veteran Ralph Peterson was the last drummer selected for Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, and he has since led a consistently excellent career and worked with dozens of top jazz musicians. Aggregate Prime is his exciting new group featuring some of the finest musicians in contemporary music: Mark Whitfield, Kenny Davis, Gary Thomas, and Vijay Iyer. Each band member has contributed new compositions and arrangements for this project, described as a mix of odd meters and swing designed to challenge the musicians and reward listeners. Most of the musicians are longtime cohorts, with the newest addition being pianist, composer, and recent MacArthur Fellow Vijay Iyer, who says, “Ralph Peterson is a drummer I’ve been listening to for about 30 years, so I feel like I’ve maybe been preparing for about that long for this moment to get to play with this masterful musician.”

They’ll be performing a combination of standards, originals, and tunes by Green’s mentor – the late, great Mulgrew Miller. The Peter Martin Trio consists of three of the most accomplished musicians of their generation. It’s the same band that recorded Martin’s latest album – confidently titled What Lies Ahead (2015) – and Martin could not have picked better musicians for the project than Robert Hurst and Gregory Hutchinson. What Lies Ahead is an elegant and upbeat collection of music that includes original tunes and pieces written by Duke Ellington, Irving Berlin, Ray Noble, and Dianne Reeves for whom Martin also serves as pianist and music director.

Vocalist Kim Nalley is already being called “legendary” and a “San Francisco institution.” Returning to great demand after sold-out runs in Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola and The Appel Room, Nalley packs a 3 1/2 octave range that can go from operatic to gritty blues on a dime, projection that can whisper a ballad or fill a room without amplification, and the ability to scat blistering solos without losing her intense swing. She has been compared to many of the greats, but in the end, Kim Nalley is her own force of nature.

Wycliffe Gordon has done it once again, winning Best Trombone in the 2016 DownBeat Critics’ Poll and Trombonist of the Year (2016) from the Jazz Journalists Association. It’s always a pleasure to welcome back this former star of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and the Wynton Marsalis Septet. Continuing our recent tradition, Gordon kicks off the holiday season with a five-night stay at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola and special performances on Thanksgiving. Wycliffe Gordon is the definition of a good time, and as Wynton Marsalis says, “just his presence is a creative experience.”

The Showtime Band is a talented group of young musicians dedicated to the music of the Swing Era. The group consists of Felix Peikli, an internationally-renowned clarinet sensation from Norway; Joe Doubleday, vibraphonist extraordinaire and a Jazz at Lincoln Center favorite; Rossano Sportiello, an esteemed Italian pianist known for his mastery of stride piano; and Russell Hall, one of New York’s most swinging and popular bassists. For this performance, they will explore the music of legendary clarinetist and bandleader Benny Goodman. With instrumentation that matches Goodman’s groundbreaking 1930s quartet, they will add their own voices to tunes made famous by Benny Goodman, Lionel Hampton, Teddy Wilson, and Gene Krupa. With the prerequisite chops and stylistic authenticity, the Showtime Band is a perfect fit for this most beloved repertoire.

In addition to being regular headliners at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, they also routinely perform in Rose Theater and The Appel Room alongside the top names in jazz.
