From September 1-October 2, Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club Coca–Cola will host the seventh annual Coca-Cola Generations in Jazz Festival featuring over 200 musicians. In keeping with tradition, the festival will feature extraordinary artists spanning three generations and programming honoring iconic musicians and composers as well as emerging artists and bandleaders.
“This year’s festival features a plethora of jazz masters that span the styles of jazz while showcasing some of our music’s finest rising stars,” said Jason Olaine, Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Director of Programming and Touring. “For 32 days, we’ll salute legendary figures and showcase some classic, classy singers. We’re also starting a new series, Big Band Mondays, which will highlight great large ensembles here in New York City. If you love jazz, you’ll want to be here many, many times in September.”
The festival kicks off on September 1 with trumpeter Bruce Harris and the Big Sax Section paying homage to cornetist Nat Adderley. Opening week continues with the Lessons from Our Masters series featuring pianist Joanne Brackeen (September 2). The Dayna Stephens Quintet performs alongside veteran jazz masters Tom Harrell and Al Foster (September 3). The week concludes with the Nate Smith Trio featuring saxophonist Jaleel Shaw and NEA Jazz Master Dave Holland in his Dizzy’s debut (September 4).
Flip Side Sessions kicks off the second week with a unique trio featuring two drummers, Eric McPherson and Jonathan Barber, and saxophonist Abraham Burton at the 7:30 pm set (September 6). Theo Croker brings an outstanding acoustic quintet to the 9:30pm set and acclaimed saxophonist Sharel Cassity offers a multi-genre performance (September 7).
Salute to Orrin Keepnews (September 8) honors the memory of the great record producer. The celebratory evening will feature living legends of the music including Jimmy Heath, Gary Bartz, Akira Tana, Jack DeJohnette, Larry Willis, Randy Weston, Ray Drummond, Rufus Reid, Sam Gill, Junior Mance, and Lee Konitz. This special performance marks the first time Weston and Gill have performed together in nearly 50 years since their seminal recordings produced by Keepnews. The festive week wraps up with the 70th birthday celebration of NEA Jazz Master saxophonist Dave Liebman (September 9-11).
Two rising star vocalists, Veronica Swift and Charles Turner, are paired for the Flip Side Sessions (September 13). Swift makes her Dizzy’s debut as leader for the 7:30 pm set and Turner will bring his vocal stylings to the 9:30 pm set. Versatile performer Ben Wendel will celebrate the release of his new album, What We Bring (September 14), followed by an evening of Latin jazz on September 15 with veteran bassist Andy Gonzalez and a stellar multi-generational lineup. Living legend, singer and actress Marilyn Maye makes her Dizzy’s debut on September 16.
For the third week of Flip Side Sessions, drummer E.J. Strickland demonstrates his versatility with a quintet featuring Godwin Louis, Victor Gould, Marcus Strickland and Linda Oh for the early set before an eclectic late set with another E.J. Strickland-led band, Transient Beings, featuring Sarah Elizabeth Charles, Mark Whitfield, Tom Guarna and Richie Goods (September 20). Jazz at Lincoln Center’s collaboration with Dave Douglas’ Festival of New Trumpet Music (FONT) brings two days of performances featuring rising trumpet player Marquis Hill and Signatures in Brass (September 21).
Vibraphonist Stefon Harris presents his new group Sonic Creed featuring Elena Pinderhughes, Mike Moreno, James Francies, Joshua Crumbly, and Obed Calvaire for a genre-bending, groove heavy performance (September 23-25). Veteran trumpeter Charles Tolliver headlines two evenings uniting multiple generations of jazz musicians.
For one night only, Grammy Award-winning vocalist Catherine Russell celebrates the release of her new project, Harlem on My Mind (September 29). Thirteen-year-old jazz prodigy Joey Alexander closes the 2016 Generations in Jazz Festival with a release party for his sophomore record, Countdown (September 30 – October 2).
This year’s festival includes the new Big Band Mondays series featuring some of today’s best big bands every Monday in September. Top trombonist Robin Eubanks and his big band, The Mass Line, inaugurate the series on September 5. The Jimmy Greene Big Band makes its Dizzy’s debut on September 12 followed by the Josh Evans Big Band on September 19. Ryan Keberle’s Big Band Living Legacy Project will wrap up Big Band Mondays on September 26.
From Tuesday through Saturday, the popular Late Night Sessions will feature some of the most talented up-and-coming jazz artists including ensembles led by Julian Lee, Jonathan Pinson, Alphonso Horne, Shenel Johns, and Emmet Cohen.

The Lessons from Our Masters series features a master of jazz alongside a multigenerational band. Tonight’s master is pianist and composer Joanne Brackeen, the “Picasso of jazz piano” and the only female alumna of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. Nearly 40 years ago, Stan Getz described Brackeen as “one of the most original and creative composers in my band.” True to the “Picasso” nickname, her compositional style has defied definition and evolved throughout her career. The constant elements have been her virtuosic chops and unpredictable approach to piano composition and execution. Brackeen remains an exciting and unique artist, and she brings with her the excellent Javon Jackson and Ugonna Okegwo for tonight’s performances. For both the band and the audience, this performance will be a lesson from a true master.

Lessons from Our Masters concerts usually feature one veteran jazz master alongside a multigenerational band. Tonight, however, multiple “masters” join forces onstage. Al Foster and Tom Harrell (who in June sold out seven consecutive shows at Dizzy’s) are each renowned veterans who have played invaluable roles in jazz for decades. Bassist Ben Street studied with both Buster Williams and Dave Holland before moving to New York City in the 1990s and working with such artists as Danilo Pérez, Kurt Rosenwinkel, James Moody, and Clark Terry. Dayna Stephens, who organized this band, is a respected bandleader and regular collaborator of contemporary heavy-hitters like Brad Mehldau, Julian Lage, and Ambrose Akinmusire. Rounding out the group is its youngest member, Aaron Parks, an esteemed Cole Porter Fellow of the American Pianists Association who has worked extensively with artists like Terence Blanchard, Joshua Redman, and Spike Lee. For both the band and the audience, tonight’s performance will be a celebratory, multigenerational showcase of jazz’s living continuum.

Holland is a famously versatile and expressive bassist who has spent a monumental career working with artists like Miles Davis, Chick Corea, Joe Henderson, Jack DeJohnette, and many more. He has also formed Grammy Award-winning bands, released dozens of albums as a leader, and won such awards as the Jazz Journalists’ Association’s Musician of the Year. Tonight he joins powerhouse drummer Nate Smith, a regular bandmate of his who organized this new trio. Also featured is saxophonist Jaleel Shaw, one of Smith’s regular collaborators. Every member of this trio is exceptional, but the rare appearance of jazz icon Dave Holland makes it a lesson from a true master that should not be missed.

Robin Eubanks, a top trombonist of his generation and a highly regarded composer, leads the first night in our brand new Big Band Mondays series. Eubanks recently released his first big band recording, More Than Meets The Ear, to great acclaim, featuring new arrangements of compositions written throughout his career for groups like the SFJazz Collective and the Dave Holland Quintet. The Mass Line Big Band boasts a serious lineup of musicians including alumni of Oberlin, where he teaches, and a number of his first-call New York City friends. They play smart, swinging big band music that achieves some interesting textures with the intermittent use of electric bass and trombone effects in an otherwise acoustic setting. In this new project, he assembled a group of elite musicians and longtime friends to explore music that he describes as “Cuban and Puerto Rican music with the focus on guitars and strings…” or in his other words, “Django Reinhardt goes to Cuba and Puerto Rico.” The eclectic repertoire includes originals and new arrangements of “Ode to Joy,” “Misty,” “A Flower is a Lovesome Thing,” and more. The Festival of New Trumpet Music (FONT Music) is a nonprofit organization founded by renowned trumpeter Dave Douglas. It is an incredible platform for trumpeters to present creative new music across all genres. This year, Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola is proud to host two evenings curated by the winner of the 2014 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Trumpet Competition, the great Marquis Hill. One of the highlights of the 2015 Festival was Hill’s performance with the Signatures in Brass band, when six trumpeters and their rhythm section blew the roof off the Jazz Gallery. Tonight’s show marks FONT Music’s first collaboration with Jazz at Lincoln Center, bringing together two formidable advocates for jazz and new music. This performance will also feature a world premiere of new music by Hill, funded by the FONT Music award of the Roy Campbell, Jr. Commission in honor of the organization’s co-founder. Ryan Keberle’s Big Band Living Legacy Project

At 35 years old, Ryan Keberle is already an astoundingly versatile musician. He’s worked closely with a variety of artists including Wynton Marsalis, Maria Schneider, Alicia Keys, Beyoncé, and Sufjan Stevens – not to mention performing with the Saturday Night Live band, Broadway orchestras, and film soundtracks. Last summer he brought his one-of-a-kind band Catharsis to Dizzy’s, and he now returns with a wildly different program. The Big Band Living Legacy Project celebrates and carries on the musical heritage of big band jazz, performed by original members of such classic big bands as Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Woody Herman, Buddy Rich, and Benny Goodman. The repertoire includes hits and lesser known works by composers including Sy Olliver, Fletcher Henderson, Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn, Neil Hefti, Ernie Wilkins, Thad Jones, and Bob Brookmeyer. Keberle is a clever arranger and passionate bandleader, and tonight’s band will inject fresh life into this timeless repertoire.

Since his 1964 recording debut with Jackie McLean, trumpeter Charles Tolliver has worked with such icons as Roy Haynes, Hank Mobley, Horace Silver, Sonny Rollins, Oliver Nelson, and Max Roach. In 1970 he released the classic album Music Inc on Strata-East – a successful and ongoing record label he co-founded – and then continued to tour with his MUSIC INC band through the 1980s and ‘90s. The history associated with the group makes this “New Charles Tolliver/MUSIC INC.” project quite exciting. With an eclectic new lineup of Bruce Edwards, Theo Hill, Essiet Essiet, and Lawrence Leathers, Tolliver will further explore this musical legacy, uniting multiple generations of jazz under his unique vision and leadership.

Catherine Russell: Harlem on My Mind

Grammy Award-winner Catherine Russell has been one of the most widely-recognized jazz vocalists since the release of her debut CD in 2006. Her experience extends beyond releasing six acclaimed albums as a solo artist; Russell has also worked with Steely Dan, David Bowie, Cyndi Lauper, Paul Simon, Jackson Browne, and Levon Helm. This winter she’ll be on tour with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, but in the meantime you can catch her at Dizzy’s for this one-night-only album release party. Her new project is titled Harlem On My Mind, and it features soulful interpretations of such influences as Ethel Waters, Billie Holiday, Benny Carter, Irving Berlin, Andy Razaf, and Fats Waller. Together, these artists helped define a golden age in Harlem – a great renaissance that continues to reverberate today through extraordinary artists like Catherine Russell. Seeing her perform live is a truly uplifting experience, making these intimate sets at Dizzy’s an easy recommendation for any jazz fan.

After jaw-dropping performances at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s 2014 Gala, Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, historic festivals around the world, and a feature spotlight on 60 Minutes, 13-year-old piano prodigy Joey Alexander returns to overwhelming demand. Tonight’s performance is an album release party for Alexander’s sophomore album on Motema Records, Countdown. This new record is the highly anticipated follow-up to 2015’s My Favorite Things, which received two Grammy nominations, making Joey the youngest Grammy Award nominee in jazz history. Alexander’s youth makes his technical ability and emotional and improvisational maturity almost startling, but this level of performance would earn the gig at any age.
