Ertegun Jazz Hall of Fame Celebration of Ben Webster

With saxophonist Jerry Weldon and saxophonist Houston Person
The votes are in, and now it’s time to properly celebrate the 2016 Ertegun Jazz Hall of Fame inductees!  Tonight we honor legendary tenor saxophonist Ben Webster, an essential voice on the instrument, first known for his work in the orchestras of leaders like Fletcher Henderson, Benny Carter, and Cab Calloway. He then held an influential, long-term role in the Duke Ellington Orchestra and went on to collaborate with such artists as Art Tatum, Oscar Peterson, and Coleman Hawkins. For this celebratory performance, two top tenor saxophonists pay homage to Webster’s transformative work on the instrument. Leading the group is Jerry Weldon, a veteran of the New York scene known both as a bandleader and as an esteemed collaborator with legends such as Lionel Hampton, Joey DeFrancesco, and Mel Tormé. Tonight’s special guest tenor saxophonist is “soul jazz” standard-bearer Houston Person, recently featured in sold-out concerts in The Appel Room. Join us on this special occasion as these tenor titans and their band launch our 2016 Ertegun Jazz Hall of Fame induction celebration.

Ertegun Jazz Hall of Fame Celebration of J.J. Johnson

With Vincent Gardner Septet
The votes are in, and now it’s time to properly celebrate the 2016 Ertegun Jazz Hall of Fame inductees!  Tonight, we honor legendary trombonist J.J. Johnson, a virtuosic instrumentalist who adapted the challenging bop stylings of Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie to his own, more cumbersome instrument of choice. As an ensemble member, soloist, and composer, Johnson’s legacy on the trombone is unmatched. Celebrating that legacy tonight is a sextet led by Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra trombonist Vincent Gardner and his septet. A favorite performer at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, Gardner always brings an abundance of virtuosity and swing to the stage. It will be an enlightening and celebratory evening as he pays tribute to J.J. Johnson, his first great influence on the trombone.

As the “modern poet laureate of jazz,” Shorter has created a peerless body of original compositions that offer infinite possibility for tonight’s celebration. The artists on stage are in charge of the program, and we’re excited to see how they approach this legendary music and add their own voices to Shorter’s ongoing legacy.

Monday Nights with WBGO: Yotam Silberstein Group

With guitarist Yotam Silberstein, pianist and accordion Vitor Gonçalves, bassist Jorge Roeder percussionist Rogerio Bocatto, and percussionist Keita Ogawa
Tel Aviv-born guitarist Yotam Silberstein had already won the coveted “Israeli Jazz Player of The Year” title at the age of 21. Soon after, he performed at Italy’s renowned Umbria Jazz Festival, released a critically-acclaimed debut album, and set out on an extensive tour of Europe and the Middle East. Upon receiving a scholarship to attend The New School in 2005, Silberstein moved to New York City, where he has released a second outstanding album and performed with such luminaries as James Moody, The Heath Brothers, and Paquito D’Rivera. It’s notoriously challenging for a jazz guitarist to climb the ranks like Silberstein, and it speaks to a high and multifaceted level of artistry to earn such acclaim at this speed. Don’t miss his anticipated return to Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola!

Jon Irabagon Quartet

With saxophonist Jon Irabagon, pianist Luis Perdomo, bassist Yasushi Nakamura, and drummer Rudy Royston

Winner of the prestigious 2008 Thelonious Monk Saxophone Competition and the New York City Jazz Record’s 2012 Musician of the Year, Jon Irabagon has become an essential voice on the New York music scene. A member of such high-profile ensembles as Mostly Other People Do The Killing, the Mary Halvorson Quintet, Dave Douglas’ new quintet, and an established bandleader in his own right, Irabagon is widely recognized in settings ranging from straight-ahead jazz and post-bop to the outer realms of experimental music and free improvisation. Tonight, audiences will enjoy the more swinging side of Irabagon’s music, as he and his longstanding rhythm section perform music from 2015’s critically-acclaimed Behind the Sky (released on his Irabbagast Records) as well as new, previously unheard music. The emotional material on Behind the Sky was composed as a reflection of the grieving process, yet the mood is far from somber, and the band’s fiery playing creates plenty of catharsis and excitement to compliment their more introspective moments.

John Ellis & Double-Wide

With saxophonist John Ellis, drummer Kendrick Scott, sousaphone player Ibanda Ruhumbika, organist Gary Versace, and trombonist Eric Miller
John Ellis is a premiere saxophonist, having performed and recorded on over 100 albums alongside artists including John Patitucci, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Robert Glasper, and Sting. Ellis is also a major force as a composer; he leads multiple bands and has received three composition grants through The Jazz Gallery, among other honors. Tonight, Ellis returns to Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola to lead Double-Wide, a funky saxophone /sousaphone /organ /trombone/drum combo that bridges Ellis’ two homes, capturing the celebratory spirit of New Orleans and the urban grit of New York City. His website describes the mix as a balance of “bayou brass, raucous gospel, and devil-may-care modern jazz.” “I love the idea of being a conduit between these two cities that I love,” Ellis says. “The band is in pursuit of humorous fun, but there’s also more weighty, sinister stuff in there.” This duality gives the band a unique depth, but the “fun” component is undeniably what comes through front and center.

Kenny Werner Trio

With pianist Kenny Werner, bassist Johannes Weidenmuellerand drummer Ari Hoenig

Kenny Werner is a world-class pianist and composer whose prolific output of compositions, recordings, and educational publications impact as many artists as they do audiences. Werner’s compositional style makes most pieces more of a meditative journey than a concise tune, and the group members excel at creating varied, extended solos around the twists and turns of each song. Werner’s book and method Effortless Mastery is considered a definitive teaching tool for improvisers to “liberate” their musicality and avoid falling back on familiar ideas, and this group puts these ideals into practice.
