Dan Block Quintet: Mary Lou Williams and Benny Carter meet Hard Bop
Saxophonist Dan Block is a classically-trained jazz chameleon, stylistically versatile and extraordinarily skilled on multiple wind instruments. Highly regarded as a classical player and in eclectic styles such as Haitian music and Broadway, Block is perhaps most well-versed in jazz tradition, ranging from early New Orleans to modal jazz and beyond. In this vein, he has worked extensively with artists like Vince Giordano & The Nighthawks (1920s and 1930s big band repertoire), guitar legend Bucky Pizzarelli, and Michael Feinstein, vocalist and keeper of the American Songbook. After recently honoring Duke Ellington in a refreshingly unique and highly praised tribute project, Block further extends this reputation in tonight’s anticipated reprisal of Mary Lou Williams & Benny Carter Meet Hard Bop. This evening features saxophonists Dan Block and Godwin Louis, pianist Adam Birnbaum, bassist Jennifer Vincent, and drummer Alvester Garnett.

Dominick Farinacci
Short Stories Album Release
When Quincy Jones first saw Dominick Farinacci perform, he famously said: “This kid is 360 degrees!” Every aspect of his talent has received its due praise—from his succinct, melodic phrasing to his highly expressive tone and strong chops. Though best known for and most interested in beautiful, patient melodies at times reminiscent of late ‘50s – early ‘60s Miles Davis, Farinacci also knows how to swing fast, rip through the blues, and branch out with aspects of Latin percussion. This young trumpet star is releasing his tenth album, Short Stories, his debut record with the famed Mack Avenue label, produced by four-time Grammy Award-winning legend Tommy LiPuma. Join us for the official album release party!

Dion Parson & 21st Century Band
GRAMMY® Award-winning drummer and composer Dion Parson has put together a powerhouse ensemble comprising some of the world’s finest musicians. Together with saxophonist Ron Blake of the legendary Saturday Night Live Band, Parson formed 21st Century Band in 1998 to showcase the music of the U.S. Virgin Islands. It has since developed an innovative sound that mixes Virgin Islands traditions, such as Quelbe, and Caribbean infusions like reggae, calypso, soca, mento, ska, zouk, steel pan, chutney, and funk, with New Orleans and African overtones. This popular group sells out Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola every year, and we’re excited to have them back for three nights of fantastic performances during Caribbean Heritage Month. These performances feature saxophonist Ron Blake, trumpeter Melvin Jones, steel pan player Victor Provost, bassist Reuben Rogers, pianist Carlton Holmes, and percussionist Alioune Faye.

Lucas Pino’s No Net Nonet
Rising star saxophonist Lucas Pino brings his No Net Nonet – plus two outstanding vocalists – for the New York City debut of Golden Rule, Turing Test: “Empathy in the Digital Age.” Pino says this new project is “about this idea of the new neighbor or neighborhood, written to illustrate why in a new world, where our Google searches, Facebook Feeds are often tailored to our comfort and desire, we’re inadvertently creating barriers from one another, weakening our resolve to be kind and understanding of our neighbors.” In terms of pure musicality, this is an undeniably swinging band featuring smart arrangements and top young New York jazz musicians. The show’s heady concept – one worth exploring, and with plenty of possibilities to navigate – will be brought to life by Vuyo Sotashe, a finalist in this year’s Thelonious Monk International Vocal Competition; Nancy Harms, a recent headliner at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola; and lyricist Jeremy Siskind, a three-time winner of the ASCAP Young Jazz Composers Award. This isn’t your average jazz set, and it promises to leave an impression long after the evening is over. These performances feature trumpeter Mat Jodrell, alto saxophonist Alex LoRe, trombonist Nick Finzer, saxophonist Andrew Gutauskas, guitarist Rafal Sarnecki, pianist Glenn Zaleski, bassist Desmond White, drummer Jimmy MacBride, vocalists Vuyo Sotashe and Nancy Harms, and lyricist Jeremy Siskind.
