Uhadi, an all-star jazz band from Johannesburg, returns by extremely popular demand to set the club alight with its joyful, high-energy brand of jazz. Jazzmeia Horn, winner of the Thelonious Monk Vocal Compeption, joins this all-star quintet from South Africa for these special concerts.

The members of the Brubeck Institute Jazz Quintet (BIJQ) have won numerous DownBeat Student Music Awards for Best Collegiate Jazz Group in the country. Touring regularly throughout the United States, the 2015-2016 BIJQ members are pianist Max Holm, guitarist Emmett Sher, bassist Zane DeBord, and drummer Timothy Angulo. For this concert, they are joined by special guest and Brubeck Institute alumnus Chad Lefkowitz-Brown.

Longtime Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra lead trumpeter Ryan Kisor returns to the club, leading his small group that has performed and recorded together to great acclaim for over 17 years. The quintet, featuring guitarist Peter Bernstein, pianist Peter Zak, bassist John Webber, and drummer Willie Jones III, has released several albums as a unit and has toured the United States and Japan extensively. This is a rare chance to hear the quintet together in New York City, where it all began.

Vocalist Tierney Sutton has released six albums in the past decade, and every one of them has been nominated for a “Best Jazz Vocal Album” Grammy Award. The Tierney Sutton Band, featured tonight, has had the same lineup for over 20 years, and they are the only collaborative team to ever receive a Grammy Award nomination for arranging. For four nights at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, audiences will enjoy the renowned and intimately experienced group whose repertoire includes jazz standards, songs from the American Songbook, deep jazz cuts not typically performed with a vocalist, and a highly lauded album’s worth of Joni Mitchell.

The popular Manhattan School of Music Orchestra, comprised of some of the most talented young musicians around, returns to Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola to pay tribute to bandleader Stan Kenton.

They have performed at prestigious venues and at festivals like the Newport Jazz Festival, and the program has turned out numerous jazz professionals now heard around New York City. Tonight she performs her much lauded Ellington tribute at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, offering a new and highly personal take on these timeless compositions.

Edmar Castaneda is an unparalleled virtuoso on the harp, recognized internationally for his stunning blend of jazz and foreign folk music, particularly from Colombia, Venezuela, and Argentina. His incredible dexterity and rhythmic independence beg for the cliché that he “must be seen to be believed,” as audio alone gives the illusion of – at minimum – a bass and harp duo. His stellar trio further rounds out the music’s jazz-rooted global representation, and tonight’s performance also features vocalist Andrea Tierra of Medellin. This quartet just got back from touring Australia and New Zealand, and their most recent New York appearance was at Carnegie Hall.

| Elio Villafranca Cinque – Suite of the Caribbean |
Cinque – Suite of the Caribbean debuted in The Appel Room in 2015 and was one of the top concerts of the 2014–15 season. Cuban pianist and composer Elio Villafranca now brings this incredible project to Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola. Villafranca is known for ambitious projects that fuse the jazz idiom with extensive knowledge of percussion and Latin rhythms, and this suite is one of his greatest accomplishments. Focusing on the influences of the Congolese traditions of rhythms, melodies, and dances–through the music of Puerto Rico, Santo Domingo, Haiti, Jamaica, and Cuba–Villafranca showcases the unifying elements of the islands, which share similar cultures despite their diverse histories. This five-movement work is inspired by the life of Joseph Cinque, a slave born in Sierra Leone who, while on the way to being illegally sold in Cuba, revolted aboard the Amistad and gained his freedom.

The 17-piece big band SUNY Purchase Jazz Orchestra (PJO), under the direction of Jon Faddis and Todd Coolman, is comprised of exceedingly talented students from the Conservatory of Music’s jazz studies program. Performing jazz from every era, from staples like Ellington and Basie to leading contemporary composers like McNeely, Clayton, Abene, and Schneider, the PJO always swings. The PJO and its many special guests have a long history with the club, and tonight the group features Grammy Award-winning saxophonist Gary Bartz, a living legend described by Stanley Crouch as “one of the very best who has ever picked up the instrument.”

Vibraphonist Joe Locke is widely considered to be one of the lead voices on his instrument, winning numerous awards and polls, including the 2006, 2008, and 2009 “Mallet Player of the Year” award from the Jazz Journalists Association. Long known as a soloist capable of stunning physical power and broad emotional range, Locke has performed and recorded with many notable musicians, including Grover Washington Jr., Kenny Barron, Eddie Henderson, Cecil Taylor, Dianne Reeves, and Ron Carter. Locke’s quartet will be joined by esteemed vocalist Kenny Washington for this annual return to the club.

World-renowned Russian trumpeter Valery Ponomarev leads “Our Father Who Art Blakey,” a big band tribute to his own former bandleader, Art Blakey. Blakey was best known for his ability to find and hone the sharpest young talent in jazz, from Lee Morgan to Wynton Marsalis, and Ponomarev, who held the trumpet spot right before Marsalis, is no exception. He now leads his own band in the same spirit, highlighting some of the most talented young jazz musicians. Join us at the club for some expertly arranged hard bop, featuring an entire big band of supreme instrumentalists.

The Temple University Jazz Band – an exemplary student group led by GRAMMY® Award-winning trumpeter Terell Stafford – returns to the club. This performance, featuring renowned clarinetist Ken Peplowski (who recently led four nights at Dizzy’s), will be a special display of up-and-coming talent under the leadership of extraordinarily experienced players. Stafford’s band credits include McCoy Tyner, Benny Golson, Jimmy Heath, and the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, and his experience as an educator is equally extensive. The Temple University Jazz Band has shared the stage with such legends as Dizzy Gillespie, Max Roach, Benny Golson, Dr. Billy Taylor, and Wynton Marsalis.

| Ralph Peterson Trio featuring the Curtis Brothers Tri-Angular 3 |
Powerhouse drum veteran Ralph Peterson was the last drummer selected for Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, and he has since led a consistently excellent career and worked with dozens of top jazz musicians from the 1980s through today. Tonight’s performance is an album release party for Tri-Angular 3 (released on Peterson’s own Onyx Productions label), an anticipated follow-up to 2000’s acclaimed Tri-Angular 2. As with his previous Tri-Angular projects, tonight’s group is a brand new trio formation that features Luques and Zaccai Curtis–two Jazz at Lincoln Center favorites known together as the Curtis Brothers. The pair has made a mark in jazz and Latin music by exploring the blues harmonies and swing rhythms of the Africa-Caribbean-New Orleans lineage that, as a cultural and musical melting pot, make for a distinct and irresistible fusion.

Christian Sands is only 26 years old, but he has been playing piano for the past 24 years, garnering GRAMMY® Award nominations, including Best Latin Jazz Piano Solo. Wynton Marsalis named him a “jazz star of the future,” and he holds a coveted position in Christian McBride’s trio. Tonight’s show will feature Matthew Rybicki and Ulysses Owens, Jr. (who also featured Sands on his latest album) performing a combination of originals and standards. Sands’ stylistic range includes stride piano, swing, bebop, progressive jazz, fusion, Brazilian, and Afro-Cuban, so expect to hear a versatile set performed by some rising jazz stars, all of whom are newly recorded bandleaders as well as prolific sidemen.

In just the past few years, Ulysses Owens, Jr. has performed at the club with artists including Christian McBride, Steve Wilson, Mulgrew Miller, Steve Nelson, and child prodigy Joey Alexander. One of the most high-profile sidemen, this GRAMMY® Award winner and DownBeat Rising Star has recently stepped into a leadership role and assembled some top-shelf groups. Tonight’s band features two members of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra – trumpeter Marcus Printup and saxophonist Ted Nash – as well as the prolific bassist Yasushi Nakamura and “king of D.C. piano” Allyn Johnson. This show takes place on Duke Ellington’s birthday.
